Ariel Pink @ Mohawk (4/10)

041009_mohawk_arielpink2Ariel Pink is one of those artists who is fairly unpredictable when it comes to the live show and you never really know what the hell the guy is gonna do.  Make your way out to Mohawk on Friday night to catch Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti along with blog hyped band Vivian Girls and opener Yellow Fever.  If nothing else, Vivian girls proved by their SXSW sets that they can put on a decent show.  Tickets for this show will be sold only at the door with music starting around 9:30.

bbs-april9th_posterMake your way to Emo’s on Thursday night for a nice local lineup of promising and upcoming bands.  Things get started at 10pm with ATH friends Whitman so get there early and start drinking cheap tall boys.  Fellow ATH favorites The Bubbles, Red X Red M, and headliners Built by Snow follow on the bill.  Tickets will be sold at the door for $8, but if you RSVP at Do512, you’ll get in for only $5.  Working on Friday is no excuse not to be there, it’s a holiday (for some of us).

An Evening At Stubbs (4/7)

164Stubb’s has a very impressive lineup on their inside and outside stage this Tuesday evening.  First off, the outside stage features ATH dance hall favorite Ratatat, who will bring the damn house down for sure.  Tussle and Despot are in support outside and kick things off around 8pm.  Tickets for this one have been sold out for a while so try to find a scalper.

As soon as the dance party ends outside, head inside for a more mellow ATH favorite Great Lake Swimmers (check out the new album review).  Kate Maki is in support and starts around 11pm.  Tickets for this show are $12 and wristbands from the earlier show do not grant access to the inside stage.  Thank you Stubbs.

Leonard Cohen @ The Long Center 4/1 & 4/2

lennyLet’s face it, there really isn’t a better show in town this week. If you are nearing the end of your life, wouldn’t you like to say that you were there when Leonard Cohen played the Long Center in Austin? Sure, tickets may be a bit much, but you can’t go wrong with buying one of these. I mean, really, you can pay your bills next month, but Leonard only comes to Austin once in a lifetime, so live it up with Leonard this week.

Calm Blue Sea Score Film @ Alamo (3/29)

siegfried20-webLocal and ATH favorites, The Calm Blue Sea, are one of those bands with music that just screams movie soundtrack/score.  The guys in the band have apparently listened to our demands and will be doing a live score at The Alamo Ritz on Sunday night.  The film to be scored is an old school black and white/silent movie from 1924 called Siegfried.  Alamo describes the silent film as one that “ranges in scope between the hellishly intense defeat and death of a Dragon to more quiet emotional moments”.  Sounds like a perfect fit for the band’s emotionally charge instrumental music.  We’re sure you won’t want to miss out on this unique opportunity to relive the days of live scoring.  Show time is set for 7pm with tickets on sale now for only $11.

From The Closet: Soundgarden

soundgarden-pressphoto10Our From The Closet this week features one of the hottest bands from the age of grunge, Soundgarden.  We bring you the rock this week to coincide with Chris Cornell brining his new solo act to town Monday at Stubb’s.  We hope that this reminds you about how completely insane this new project with Timbaland is.  Remember the rock?  We do.  And hey!  Get tickets for Chris Cornell’s show on Monday and get a free digital download of new album Scream. What a deal.  We promise this is the last time we make fun of the Cornell/Timbaland project.  Maybe.
