Beach House have come a long long way since the first time I caught them at old Emos back in the day…but even then, they were onto something. That all culminated in a sold out show at ACL Live, which was a pretty near perfect venue for the band.

If you’ve been reading any of the ridiculous mid-year album lists (of which I made my own) you’ll likely notice a trend among all lists…that trend being that Beach House‘s latest album 7 is high upon the list. Sub Pop dropped the album in May, and it’s amassed continuous buzz and support since it dropped; tonight you’ll get a chance to catch the group at ACL LIVE. Honestly, I can’t think of a venue more fit to host a dreamy set by the group; the lighting alone will do wonders for the performance. Ed Schrader’s Music Beat will be opening the night around 8 PM; so be sure you’re there in time to catch Beach House take the stage just after 9.
Former Red Red Meat and current Califone songwriter Tim Rutili has been at it for forever. But, currently, he’s focused on his project with his Austin friend, Craig Ross; the two released Guitars Tuned to Air Conditioners back in 2016 and 10 Seconds to Collapse this last month. If you were to listen to the lead single, you’d probably recall Yankee Hotel Foxtrot era Wilco…when they were still dabbling with experimenting over folk structures. The duo will be playing Saturday night at Beerland, joined on stage by friends Lindsey Verrill and Thor Harris; Moist Flesh and Knife in the Water will also be playing. ATH was always down for a night out when Letting Up Despite Great Faults was on a bill. Bedroom pop shimmy vibes…
Out of that project, we now have Fanclub (or ffffanclub for your social media searching needs). This trio is comprised of Letting Up lead Mike Lee and drummer Daniel Schmidt with new-to-the-mix-on-vocals Leslie Crunkilton. Some of us at ATH always felt that Mike would find his way into a collab using a female-vocal up front. So, here we are with a shiny new track to give us something use to preview their upcoming appearance during Hot Summer Nights at Mohawk on the 28th.
B. Gray’s note: We have a little bonus show coverage for you today, Guided By Voices played The Mohawk and we got Raphael Umscheid out of the studio and into the crowd with the simple task of enjoying himself in a shower of Lone Star.

Everyone knows the lyrics to Guided By Voices’ songs and they are eager to sing loudly as a flurry of beer suds ascend into the air. Guided By Voices took the stage in the early Summer Texas heat, in support of their latest album “Space Gun”, in coordinated shiny gold jackets with the album title affixed to the jacket backs. Within the span of a typically short GBV song, Pollard was removing the jacket for the comforts of cotton. The band followed their leader’s queue within a song or two. The energetic 60 song set covered a wide range of albums and hits. Pollard worked the old school rock cliches to full effect.

I’m never one to shy away from a Belle and Sebastian set, and thankful we were able to enjoy a night at the always beautiful ACL Live. Plus, it also gave us a time to preview the much-hyped Men I Trust. Check below for more words and photos.
It’s rare that you find a great Monday evening show, but tonight we have just such an event with Katie von Schleicher playing at Barracuda tonight. If you read these pages, you’ve likely heard me rave about Bleaksploitation and Shitty Hits…and even a quick write up on her latest single Glad to Be Here. She waltzes into town tonight with deserved buzz, and several albums worth of powerful songs that put her on par with the Angel Olsens and Cate Le Bons of the my world. Plus, she’s joined by our friend Jana Horn as the opening act, which means you have to show up super early to catch what we can only assume will be another striking performance by Jana. Doors open at Barracuda at 8 PM.
If you haven’t been reading the cool sites, then maybe you’ve missed the swirling hype surrounding Austin’s Sun June. Hype or not, we here at ATH can attest to the band’s talents, both live and recorded. Tonight they gather with friends and label mates to celebrate the release of their new album, Years; you can stream that whole LP right HERE. Daphne Tunes will kick things off, followed by the esteemed Julia Lucille. Hopefully you Austinites remember that we just recently released the wonderful debut LP by Feverbones, Dream Talk. Well, tonight you’re likely to hear a set including several of those tracks, as the band take the stage with their friends (and ours), Good Field. But, rest assured, they aren’t the only bands, with Linen Closet and My Golden Calf also gracing the stage tonight.
