ACL 2015 WE2 In Pictures: Saturday Edition

TV On The RadioCollection Two…

Saturday’s lineup was feeling a bit weak as I rubbed the sleep from my eyes, but I soldiered on and ended up having a great day. Despite being first, I still contend that FIDLAR was the most rock and roll we got in any 45 minute slice at ACL this year. Come at me, I’ll argue it and win. The “Sweater Song” done with meows for the verses? Can’t beat that. It was also home to the most legit beer-throwing. After that, I chased music and photos equally ending the night with a brief amount of deadmau5‘s crazy stage setup in the viewfinder and a stroll through the Waterloo Records tent. My real headliner was TV on the Radio; such a great set and about the best we have seen from the band in years – concise and on point. In between, we have Ryn Weaver, Glass Animals, Houndmouth, locals Sounds Del Mar, a very solid set from Unknown Mortal Orchestra and a revisit of Jose Gonzalez.

ACL 2015 WE2 In Pictures: Friday Edition

ACLSo, let’s start with the photo portion of our ACL coverage. I have a confession; I sold my soul to take photos of the Foo Fighters. Yes, I signed a release. If the Foo people read this, please try to keep up to your end of the bargain and leave the watermark for ATH and send a little credit our way “as allowed”. I’ll probably never check if you guys use my pics, but be nice.

The Friday edition of photos starts with Avers and ends with the Foos, Son Little, Royal Blood, London Souls, Albert Hammond Jr., Billy Idol, Run The Jewels and Tame Impala in between.

ATX Weekend Show Preview

austin_mainACL Festival is still in town, still going down. But, we’re letting B. Gray get the glory for our team with his camera work. Still, despite the attraction there, you’ll find tons of really incredible local shows you need to attend, including some great album releases by some of Austin’s best (in my opinion anyways). Here’s a quick rundown of the highlight, and we hope you consider attending at least one of these show.  Read more

The Bill Ball: An Interview w/ Eric Bill — October 9th @ Swan Dive

12042917_10103610812125518_894458247127330031_nWith all the buzz about Austin music dying and what not, I think it’s interesting to note that there have been a ton of like-minded individuals coming out to create their own curated shows. We did ATX Popfest, Raw Paw had the Alien Zine, Vegas has Good Vibrations and now there’s the Bill Ball at Swan Dive on October 9th. These things have always been around, but they seem to be gaining prominence as people try to create a sense of community here in town. I caught up with Eric Bill of the band Big Bill to grab some of his thoughts on the First Annual Bill Ball…and his band too. Read on for the answers and a video for the Bill Ball! Read more

Show Preview: Ultimate Painting @ Mohawk (TONIGHT)

ultimate paintingIt’s a busy week for Austin, with tons of bands and people about to fill the city for ACL, but that being said, I really don’t want you to miss out on seeing Ultimate Painting tonight. They’ve released two incredible albums, both flying under the radar despite receiving great amounts of praise. I, for one, can also vouch for the fact that they’ve got an incredible live show ready for you; it’s one of the most rehearsed, tightest sets I’ve seen from an act in several years. Plus, you’ll get to see The Zoltars open up the night; they’re easily one of my Top Ten Austin acts playing around the city right now. Dryspell will also share the opening slot, so please come early to watch yourself some locals. Tickets are 10 bucks and doors open at 9 PM.

Show Review: Destroyer @ The Mohawk (9/24)

DestroyerWednesday night was a packed evening, with tons going on in Austin. But, I know I’ll see Thee Oh Sees at least four more times this year, minimum, so I went with my heart and something a little more rare, Destroyer. Not only that, but we got an extra special treat, as flight delays for Jennifer Castle meant we were treated to an Austin great, Thor Harris & Friends. Read on for some brief thoughts and Brian’s photos.

Show Pics: 3 x 3 Series @ The Mohawk (9/21)

3x3 with Templo X 41We love live music. We love Austin artists. We want to help you love them, too. We need your help to keep bringing you the best jams for cheap. Go to our shows, buy our records. /rant

The 3 x 3 series is a brilliant idea. Let’s make it easy for venues to be open when we know it is a smaller show and get new bands exposure. We had another brilliant lineup for last Monday’s show. We got to check out the first live set for Mean Jolene, ever. We got to see Caitlin from Ultraviolet dedicate a song to her parents. We got to see Templo X for the last time in a while before Paul headed back up to Philly. I got to take pictures. It was a great night of talking with the musicians, busting balls about 90’s Emo bands and a ton of great new songs.

Show Preview: Destroyer @ Mohawk (Tonight)

D700 Destroyer 156

Date TONIGHT
Location Mohawk
Doors 6:30 PM
Tickets $20 from TE

Perhaps the greatest thing to come out of the New Pornographers explosion (in my opinion) is the mass discovery of Dan Bejar. Now, I don’t want to take away from the rest of the group, but Dan, under his Destroyer moniker, has by and far exceeded my expectations. Everything he releases is ultimately interesting, and this year’s Posion Season is a must have in any modern indie record collection. And live, he’s something else. He’s one of those characters you can’t peel your eyes away from, leaving you emotionally invested in every musical note. Jennifer Castle will open the show early, so show up to support the support.

Show Preview: Mike Krol @ Mohawk — Tonight

mikeI get it. We all wanna watch Thee Oh Sees for the 407th time at Hotel Vegas, but you can catch them tomorrow, so pick the smarter option and head to Mohawk tonight to see Mike Krol. He’s gotten some great press for his rock n’ roll stylings, and his recent release via Merge, Turkey. But, like all good shows, you’ve got to have great openers, and this bill has two of my favorite Austin acts. Opening is Shivery Shakes around 10, so be there to support our boys. Also, Sweet Talk grabbed the middle slot, and trust me when I tell you that their new LP will definitely be in our Top Ten of Austin LPs to come out in 2015. Bet on it. The show’s $10, doors are at 9 PM.

Show Pics: Get Up Kids & Diet Cig @ Mohawk (9/16)

The Get Up Diet Cig 83It was quite a night for Team ATH at The Mohawk earlier this week. Nathan is Emo kid. Hashtag child of he nineties. I relate. He gets excited about The Get Up Kids like I get excited about The Cure. That was the outside show. The inside show later was Diet Cig, a two-piece that has been heaped praise upon by us and much of the intarwebs. Turns out, they got in early to hang out and watch their openers, heh.

We have tons of pics from the night and a few notes. Get ready for Josh Berwanger, Hotelier, The Get Up Kids, Rose Selavy, Pleasure Venom and Diet Cig and then click read more…
