Nathan and I were on double show duty. We started the evening at Red7 for Zola Jesus. We made notes, we shared them with Nicole, she didn’t entirely agree with what we had to say which we are OK with.
…and now for something completely different.
We made our way to Hotel Vegas for some jams to catch Beth Israel, Ghetto Ghouls and The Dead Space. Click past the break for a couple notes and plenty of pics…
TONIGHT! Man. What to do? There’s two incredible shows going down, and it’s hard for me to pick just one; maybe I’ll just scramble back and forth between the two. Take your pick…classic indie pop or garage-influenced power pop…either way you’re going to win if you go out tonight. So, you can hit up Holy Mountain for the softer side of things. The Columnist, Charm Bracelet and Missions all open things up for Ramesh. I love Ramesh, as a person and a performer; he manages a great stage presence that’s as inviting as it is exciting. We even helped released his debut LP last year, so pick one up if your in attendance. But, I also adore the work of Warm Soda and Those Howlings, who are opening for Adam and the Cola Kids at Hotel Vegas. Those Howlings will use this as a release to their new album. So pick a show, either show, but go out and have fun kids.
After a dreary and wet Tuesday, there was a last minute change in venues and door times from The Mohawk, but if anything, this seemed to draw more people to the warmth and comfort of Red 7. The eclectic hodgepodge sound of opener Deradoorian served as an interesting juxtaposition to the drama of Zola Jesus‘ pop music.

I love the fact that we can just head out any night in this town and find not one good local show, but several. had a new lens to play around with so it seemed the perfect excuse to head out. Out I went last Thursday night and I got to check out Citadel‘s second show ever, Deep Cuts in town from Houston and our ATH faves Shivery Shakes.
I will take you through the night with a few notes and plenty of pics right after the break…
Catchy name game, am I right? There are two really incredible shows on Tuesday night, and frankly, they’re on completely opposite ends of the spectrum. That being said, I suggest you follow in our footsteps and hit up both. Those looking to indulge their pop sweet tooth need to hit up Zola Jesus and Deradoordian at Mohawk. ZJ is coming into town rocking her new album TAIGA; I’m hoping she touches a lot on her last LP, Conatus quite a bit. You can get tickets for $16 HERE; doors are at 6:30 PM.
But, on the other end of the spectrum is the phenomenal line-up at Hotel Vegas. The Dead Space are the spotlight, and they’re record Faker might just be one of the best records to come out of ATX in some time. Still, you can catch other heavy hitters Ghetto Ghouls and Beth Israel if you’re up to it. I think you’re best served by hitting up both shows. Doors at Vegas open at 9 PM.

It’s a really good weekend for shows, and it’s good to see the scene heating back up after the Winter seasonings. Friday night is sure to be the highlight of the weekend, but look to some other rad shows you can attend about town. It’s that time of year, when things start to pick up across town as we warm up to SXSW. There’s a great deal of shows this week, but I’d like to encourage you all to hit up Cheer Up Charlies to catch some local Texas acts that I guarantee will bring joy to your life. You’ve got the impressive Deep Cuts folks from Houston, who are growing increasingly popular. Shivery Shakes, who released their Three Waves and a Shake LP on ATH Records, will help keep your spirits up. Plus Modrag and Casual Strangers intend to get you there early, as they’re both extremely worthy of your attendance. There’s no cover and the show starts at 9 PM. Come enjoy the weather and the good vibes.

I really do appreciate what Red Bull Sound Select is doing for locals. By selecting local acts to open for a touring group or a local mainstay, charging a cheap cover that involves getting there early, several bands are getting a few more eyes than a normal show. This, of course, is a pet peeve of ours; the venues and booking people go out of their way to get you a good lineup for your show-going dollar so get there to see the openers, geez.
The latest edition had an act form Dallas call Dark Rooms, local faves Orthy and was headlined by Slow Magic to bring the crowd. In fact, I was quite surprised by the masses there to see Slow Magic. There just might be something to this whole EDM fad. Heh.

So it’s cold and rainy… the perfect excuse for you to stay home tonight and watch a movie like a loser, right? WRONG. Tonight at The Mohawk inside, locals Reservations are going to bring their delicate folk tunes to your ears, and you don’t want to miss them. Jana Horn’s beautiful vocals accompanied by soft acoustic guitar and those swelling drums are sure to make for the perfect warming ambiance. Tickets are cheap and this full night of music includes Ama and a split EP release of Dwight Smith and Nathan Wilkins (Hikes). If you weren’t already persuaded, listen to the track below and it will help you make up your mind.

Orthy has been in the studio. Will we get a bunch of new jams? Hopefully.
Red Bull Sound Select hopes that by bringing Slow Magic through town you will get silly with locals Orthy and Dallas’s Dark Rooms. Slow Magic had a jam on our Best of 2014 so we’re good with it. The weather may suck, but let’s dance a little.
