Show Preview: Mutual Benefit @ Red 7 (Tonight 10/21)

mutual

Date 10/21/14 (TONIGHT)
Location Red 7
Doors 9:00pm
Tickets 12$ Here, 14$ at the Door

Mutual Benefit is the work of Jordan Lee and sometimes his friends– that is to say this project from Lee is often just one man’s take on quiet and well orchestrated folk/experimental pop that happens to be fleshed out with the help from many others. If you’ve never heard the band before, you should expect a mix of delicate string work mixed with fluttering lyrics. Opening up for them are Suno Deko, who sound like a nice little mix of electronic and indie rock, a la something like Sun Airway. This should be a gentle addition to your tuesday evening.

Have a listen to what exactly you’ll be missing if you don’t turn up to Red 7 tonight:

Double Show Review: Sharon Van Etten/ Allo Darlin’ @ The Mohawk 10/18

The MohawkSaturday night was a busy night at The Mohawk for tunes, but one that worked out quite nicely for those interested in both main acts. Outside featured the emotional force of Sharon Van Etten, riding high off the release of her latest stunning album Are We There, which came out earlier this year. Inside had Allo Darlin’ doing the same—their new record, We Come From The Same Place, just released last week. The combination of these acts provided a nice balance of heavy and light to the night, both groups giving out their own take on catharsis.

Read more about how the night unfolded and see some stunning pictures from B.Gray after the jump.

I Went To Three More Days Of ACL

Surviving ACL 2014On Monday, I was tired. The four days between ACL Weekends included a day of recovery, a full week’s work of the day job in three days and quite a bit of time editing photos. Then three more days of fun, jams and mud – and not necessarily in that order. But it was time for entertaining out of town guests, playing tour guide, eating the best festival food and navigating through the depths humanity with a soundtrack provided by festival bands.

ACL Interview: Rey Pila

Rey PilaI realize that ACL is completely done now and many folks have the festival in their rearview as we move on to the next thing, but I’ve got one last related piece to share with you.  Our final interview, and possibly our most interesting, comes today from new wave band Rey Pila.  The ATH crew was excited for this one because we got to practice some of our Spanish with the Brooklyn based, but Mexico born band.  Follow the jump for full interview.

Show Preview: Perfume Genius @ the Parish (10.14)

Perfume-Genius-001

Date Tuesday, October 14th
Location The Parish
Doors 7:00 PM
Tickets $15 from the Parish

I know every one is milling about trying to get their hands on those Widespread Panic tickets, but if you didn’t luck out there, you’ve got a better option waiting in the wings.  Perfume Genius will be bringing his intimate sounds to the perfect setting: the Parish stage.  Now, while his early work was quite solemn and based around piano ballads, his newest album, Too Bright, offers a broader spectrum of sounds.  There’s still this brilliantly personal approach to the songwriting, but the sound has blossomed into a huge pop opus.  Those not in attendance will regret their choice, as this will clearly be the rage at the office water cooler on Wednesday morning. Matteah Baim will be opening the evening up.
