Always being the good samaritans, TOMS is giving back once again for an event in Austin today.  The idea is to bring awareness to all those who suffer from blindness or any other type of vision problem with a pop up art show and live music at the TOMS austin location.  The music gallery will be running all day and features Instagram photos from fans of the brand (use hashtag #givesight to be a part).  Music begins at 6:30 and features local DJ Mel along with acoustic sets from The Wind + The Wave and Matt Mondanille (Ducktails/Real Estate).  Give back fools!

ACL Recap & Photos: Day 1

ACLWeekend one of ACL is now over, so naturally it’s time to reflect on what went down during the 3 day festival.  Today we’ll be focusing on Friday of the first weekend and offering our thoughts on bands that played along with the general atmosphere.  Each ATH member will share their opinion and we’ll also get some fancy photos from our man B.Gray.

Follow the jump for photos and recaps.

Show Preview: The Shivas @ Hotel Vegas (TONIGHT)

The-ShivasIt’s Wednesday, your energy is back up from the weekend, so why not destroy it with a little rock n’ roll? Sure, there’s some other shows in town (Guitars Eat Bass Amps, Borrisokane), but there really is one place you can go for the best rock n’ roll time of your life.  For one, The Shivas will be in town at Hotel Vegas.  Their last 7″, with the track below, literally played every day on my stereo for two months…at least once a day, if not more.  Plus, three incredible local acts from your town of Austin will be playing: Rayon Beach, Loteria and Nameless Frames.  The latter is fairly new on the scene, but the other two have been killing it for years, with Loteria taking up my vote for most underrated act in town. You know you’ll have fun here.

Show Preview: Dark Blue @ Beerland (10.2)

ceremonyThe town is about to be billowing over with traffic; you know you’re going to be filled with angst, especially if you live near Barton Springs Rd, so why not get that anger out with a really rad rock n’ roll show at Beerland on Thursday.  I’ve covered a lot of the tunes from Dark Blue, who are sort of a lesser-known super group of sorts (Paint it Black, Strand of Oaks, Ceremony); their music is this darkened rock n’ roll that’s had me hooked for weeks.  But, if that’s not enough to get you out, then just look at the incredible line-up featuring great local acts Total Abuse, Video and Xetas; there’s not a better bill in town, I promise.  Check out Pure Reality below, the new LP from Dark Blue.

Show Preview: The Room Screening + Major x 3 Performance

tommyIf you’ve heard of the movie The Room, the odds are you might question why our friends at Holy Mountain would be showing the “worst movie ever” at their venue.  Well, perhaps there’s the intellectual curiosity debating the standards of taste or perhaps it’s all about the film’s cult status.  Either way, they’re doing it, and they’re bringing our friends in Major Major Major to the stage just beforehand for a special performance where we hear Adrian will be playing the entirety of the Road Warrior soundtrack (could just be a rumor on that end).  Regardless, it’s something different to do on your Monday night, plus there will be drink specials. Come join us?  More info HERE.

Show Review: Conor Oberst @ Stubbs (9/20)

IMG_2947-2Conor Oberst takes a moment to stop in and say hello to his Austin fans and the reception and crowd participation (though, maybe not encouraged) screamed at me something I’ve been denying from my first intimate moments with his music in a dark bedroom on a lonely, suburban street; Conor Oberst is a household name. No, he is not on the front cover of EW from time to time promoting himself.  Yes, he still thinks of himself as an independent musician, pumping his heart through his quill with only the purely artistic need to express himself and his feelings.  Maybe, though, after so much time, twenty-one years, of painting musical landscapes in which his poetry can frolic, we have all chosen him as a member of our family.  Follow the jump for more.

Busy Thursday Night in Austin

ramThere’s really only one show you NEED to go to.  That’s the Ramesh album release over at the Belmont, which kicks off at 7 PM.  I’ll be there, smiling, and hopefully selling LPs.  But, for those of you who aren’t into Ramesh, which I completely respect, there’s tons going on tomorrow night, so here’s some places you might want to find yourself.  Read more

Ramesh The King LP Release – TODAY!!! Album Stream

ramFor a kid born and raised in Austin, there are a handful of bands that hold a great deal of meaning to my life, at least in regards to growing up.  Voxtrot is one of those bands, so it has been an absolute pleasure for me to work with Ramesh, one of the main songwriters in the group.  He quietly released The King digitally earlier this year, and we here at Austin Town Hall Records are releasing the album TODAY on vinyl.  It’ll be at all your local shops, but you can also grab it from us online HERE. And, if you’re lucky enough to live here in Austin, Ramesh is playing his album release show at the Belmont on Thursday night with She Sir and Mahogany.  It’s going to be a great night in honor of this great release.  I hope to see you there, or ship you a record.
