Austin Psych Fest 2014 In Pictures

Psych 14 BannerAPF7 has come and gone. Charlie Megira is my new favorite thing. Temples surprised me (ignore their flowery songs and cut to the big stuff). Think No Think were my favorite locals. The Horrors were dark, but sounded great even from the photo pit. The Fresh & Onlys are our new favorite people in rock and/or roll.

I thought I would try something new as we work out the rest of the bugs in the site after an unplanned server move (that sucked) by embedding a slideshow of the giant gallery from my photo site. Feedback welcome.

Show Preview: We Are Scientists @ Red 7 (5.15)

WeAreScientists-300x163

Date Thursday, May 15th
Location Red 7
Doors 9:00 PM
Tickets $13 from Red 7

We Are Scientists are blowing into town supporting the release of this year’s album, TV en Francais.  The record has done pretty well, but I’d like to advise you to catch the opening act PAWS.  The Glaswegian band brings a nice dosage of rock and pop to the table, but it’s also not every day a band from overseas gets to spend a little bit of time in our town.  You’ll also enjoy jamming to their most recent LP, Youth Culture Forever, or go even further back with Cokefloat.  Your Thursday night needs a dosage of fun? Then meet us at Red 7.

Show Preview: The Migrant Kids @ Mohawk (5.12)

migrant

Date Monday, May 12th
Location Mohawk
Doors 9:00 PM
Tickets $6 at the Door

We’ve written about Austin’s Migrant Kids many a post, so we don’t really need to harp on the act much more, other than you’ll miss out on their set if you don’t stay through the night.  But, what caught my eye on the line-up was BE Godfrey‘s EP release.  I posted about one of his new tracks last week, and it’s definitely something that warrants your listening, both at the Mohawk, and at home.  Where else could you pick it up but from the artist himself? They’ll also be joined by Austin’s Silver Ships opening the night up, so you’ve got a great set of mellow jams to enjoy all night long..perfect way to slide into the work week.

Show Pics: Spoon @ Hotel Vegas (5/6)

Spoon - David Hall for CoSBonus coverage!

We have a little guest photo action for you today. Friend of the program, David Hall, was on the list for the random Spoon show at Hotel Vegas the other night. Just so happens, he needed an assist due to scheduling issues, so my camera was able to attend as his +1.

Allegedly, it was an hour of the hits and no new stuff. Sounds like a good way to knock the rust off the band. Comedians get to work over new material in clubs, so should bands. Head past the break to see a few sweet photos by D. Hall.

Show Pics: Warpaint @ Urban Lounge (4/29)

WarpaintField Trip.

The day job has changed a bit for me recently to include a little more travel. That means the occasional opportunity to take in a show in another city and get to check out some new venues and make new friends. I ended up in Salt Lake City the same time as Warpaint, who have stirred a bit of controversy lately, and arranged to be able to shoot a show at the Urban Lounge. Opening the night was James Supercave.

Read on for a little photo walk, some thoughts about the venue and plenty of pics.

Show Preview: Love Inks @ Mohawk (4.28) – FREE

showoffWhat’s better than a free show at one of Austin’s best venues? A free show with three incredible electronic bands, and that’s precisely what you’ll get if you head out to Mohawk tonight.  First up you’ll get Silk Rodeo; they offer a dark bit of electronica with an ability to build their sound to swelling heights of pop delight.  Then, there’s Whiite Walls; this is perhaps one of Austin’s biggest rising electronic based stars, though they play with a full-on band, making their sets remarkable.  Closing the night will be Love Inks, who affirmed their place in the local music scene with last year’s Generation Club.  I hear they’re working on brand new tunes, so you might get a set full of new tracks for your ears.  In the end, it’s a great local bill, and one you’ll be sore about if you don’t take advantage of this FREE SHOW.

Show Review: Bells & Parks @ Holy Mountain

bellsandparkVersailles, the ambitious and aptly titled EP of Austin new comer Bells and Parks, strives to create the detailed soundscapes and layers reflective of their self appointed Baroque/Dream Pop genre. A follow up to to the March 13th single “Streams”, Versailles is executed with the focus that was missing from the group’s freshmen effort. While “Streams” sounds like the excited songwriting effort of a new Micro-Korg owner, Versailles is more contained and thought out, with mature use of synth layers to inform the songwriter’s vision rather than overwhelm it.
