Show Review: The National @ ACL Live (4/22)

After last year’s RainCL debacle, many fans of these gentlemen from Brooklyn were disappointed to miss out on their set, which was scheduled for a brief slot on Sunday. To counter this missed show, The National came back in full force, booking two sold out nights and a third added in the aftermath of popular demand. Riding high off of their sixth full-length album, which has steepened their rise of popularity initiated by High Violet to a new level. They brought along the ladies of LA’s Warpaint to open, and the crowd was amped up to hear their new favorites off of 2013’s Trouble Will Find Me.

Show Review: Odonis Odonis @ Mohawk (4.21)

I know, I know. Everyone was at the National on night one! But, I’ve seen them, and I was going on Tuesday, so I penciled in a show that I was really excited about. I’ve been raving about Odonis Odonis since their last EP, and their new record, Hard Boiled Soft Boiled, has been on constant rotation. While the crowd might not have been what I hoped, the show definitely lived up to my expectations. Read more

Humpday Austin Shows: Our Austin Show Preview Spotlight

The great thing about our fair city is that with all the huge traveling shows drawing people out, we can also sneak off to our favorite venues to catch a lot of the great local acts. And, for those of you out on the town already…you’ve had a few drinks so far, so you may as well go the extra mile and catch one of these three suggested shows below. I promise you won’t be disappointed in your night. Check out these gigs:

Think No Think, A. Sinclair, Lowen @ Mohawk – 9 PM – Free if you’re already at the Future Islands gig.

A Giant Dog, The Stuffies, Trustees, DJ Andrew McCalla @ Hotel Vegas – 9 PM – Not a single bad band on this bill.

Tele Novella, The Sour Notes @ Stubbs – 10 PM – It’s a free show following the modern day version of Wilson Phillips, Haim.

ACL 2014 Lineup Announced

The two-weekends of ACL will be headlined by the nineties. Eminem, Pearl Jam, Beck and Outkast are joined by newbie Skrillex on the top of the marquee. Those of you that bought Weekend Two passes will get the musical stylings of Lorde. Meh. As usual, the alleged top tier will be the soundtrack to our exit.

While we aren’t giddy about the headliners here, we are pretty thrilled with the meat of the lineup. Interpol, Belle and Sebastien, Real Estate, St Vincent, Broken Bells, Tune-Yards, Polica, Cults, The Rosebuds, Phantogram, CHVRCHES, Temples, Miniature Tigers, Mac Demarco, The Replacements, Chromeo, SNOWMINE (WE1), Beat Connection (WE2) and what will likely be the best thing you see all festival JAGWAR MA!

There’s a ton of heavy-hitting shows in town this week, from Vampy Weeks to Mogwai…and beyond. But, you should start your Monday night with something particularly special, something loud; you should get your week going by hitting up the Odonis Odonis show at Mohawk tonight! We’ve mentioned the band on numerous occasions, but now that we’ve had ample time to have our ears destroyed (willingly) by the group’s new album, Hard Boiled Soft Boiled, I’m adamant that this show is something you can’t miss. But, I warn you, your going to need to get your ears checked afterwards, just to make sure they’re still working right. They’ll be joined by Shockwave Riderz and Super Thief, so be sure to schedule in some time for this can’t miss evening of tunes.

Show Review: Mac Demarco @ Mohawk (4.13)

It’s clear that Mac Demarco has the world eating out of the palm of his hands. He’s received rave reviews from all over for his recent release, Salad Days, and he blew into Austin, selling out his show at the Mohawk weeks before the show even happened. Honestly, I didn’t even know he was that huge, but his show definitely proved he’s got what it takes to keep pushing forward.

The Mad Caddies @ Red 7 (04.11.14)

There are many reasons why bands tend to take a hiatus. Reasons such as conflict within the group, lack of creativity, and loss of direction. Sometimes life just gets in the way of a music career, but it’s not a forced or unwelcome break; it’s a much more positive experience. Such is the story of the Santa Barbara based septet, The Mad Caddies, who graced a stage in Austin at Red 7 for the first time since 2006.

Arcade Fire @ Austin360 Amphitheater 04/10/14

Thursday night had a lot to live up to: big stage, bigger venue, and a band who seem to be bigger by the minute. What else was big? Ticket prices. With Standing GA/Floor tickets going for 70 dollars and seats for 50, I was hesitant to fork over the big dollars, but having seen this band twice before, both in a festival setting and on their own, I knew the incredible live show they were capable of. I talk, of course, of Arcade Fire, indie rock cornerstone band that has bled into the mainstream. While not a big fan of Reflektor, I lowered my expectations in anticipation of the heavy prevalence of these new tracks, but I did not expect the level of gimmicks that was in store for the night.

Austin Weekend Show Suggestions

This weekend, above most normal weekends, is a pretty good reason to go out. There’s a benefit being put on by sxswcares, raising money for victims of the SXSW tragedy. A lot of these venues are saving up for donations, are hosting events, as well as directing folks to various on-line auctions to raise money, so be sure to help support the worty cause; remind people what a great community we are. Show Preview: S. Carey @ Holy Mountain (4.7)

I imagine it’s been fairly difficult for S. Carey to escape his ties to Bon Iver, but with the recent release of Range of Light, he seems to continue to get beyond the shadows of his other work. His songwriting is quite intimate and personal, allowing listeners to find themselves lost in his musical compositions. He’ll be joined at Holy Mountain by White Hinterland, another group that’s crafting these ornate pieces that quietly immerse you in another world. And, opening the night will be local lady-hero, Dana Falconberry, who really needs no introduction. You’ve got three great musicians, and no excuses, so head out tonight! And, S. Carey has a free show at Waterloo at 6 if you’re into that sort of thing.
