Date Thursday, March 27th
Location Cheer Up Charlies
Doors 9:00 PM
Tickets FREE

Traveling acts are rather sparse this week, as the bands wait for us to clean the streets of SXSW, so you’re best bet is to catch one of the great local acts playing about town.  My suggestion is to catch RF Shannon this Thursday evening over at Cheer Up Charlies.  The show is FREE, for one, but the group is also one of the acts who everyone is expecting a big year from in Austin.  They’ve just released their Hunting Songs LP on Punctum Records, which is worth your listening pleasure.  They’ll be joined on the evening by King Mary and Real Live Tigers.  Join me, won’t you?

Show Preview: Bad Sports @ Beerland (3.26)

Date Wednesday, March 26th
Location Beerland
Doors 9:00 PM
Tickets Tickets at the door

For those of you looking to get out of the house on Wednesday night, this is hands down the best line-up you’ll find, possibly all week long.  You’ll get to open your evening with our favorites, Eets Feats, who always put on a solid live set, then they’ll be followed by Zoltars.  If you haven’t listened to the latter band’s Walking Through the Dark then you’re missing something that belongs in your record collection.  The night will close out with Fleshlights and Bad Sports.  These are two acts that I never grow tired of seeing live; they’re full of energy and a rawness that you don’t always get when going out about town.  I’d say your plans for Wednesday night have already been made.

Show Review: Four Tet @ The Mohawk (3/1)

Kieran HebdenKieran Hebden is a collector. A hunter-gather of sorts. With fine antiquities or rare stamps, the value of a collection is often determined by the finicky demand of the market. Hebden’s assemblage is a more specialized and unquantifiable archive; at least to the lay-person. Known lovingly as Four-Tet, the London-based producer collects music, or more specifically, samples. Little snippets of carefully curated melody or rythym. Like any artist, the real magic happens in the process and with an ever-growing presence in the electronic world, Four-Tet has managed to become a house-hold name with his ability to build stunning tracks from basically nothing but his snippits.

On Saturday night, he returned to the Capitol city with a new set of offerings on display. The market was indeed ripe.

The 2014 Austin Music Blogger Awards

AMBA 2014 Photo BannerIt was a great event. We were proud to be a part of it.

I have a list of winners and so many photos. Orthy sounded great, buoyed by Ian and Jeramy’s win for best DJs as Learning Secrets. Shivery Shakes ripped after their win for “Sidewalk Talk”. Jess was charming and haunting as ever, congrats. A Giant Dog stole the show with their set, while Mirror Travel may have given some voters buyer’s remorse. Magna Carda is hip-hop in Austin; go see them.
