Contest: La Luz Ticket Giveaway w/ Pure Bathing Culture (1/27)

La-LuzOur friends at Hardly Art are helping us hook you up with a great deal that seems pretty awesome.  They’re willing to give away a pair of tickets to one of the most anticipated shows in town next week: La Luz with Pure Bathing Culture.  La Luz released It’s Alive last year via Hardly Art, and the group really built a strong name for themselves before encountering a little tragedy curbed their touring.  But, now they’ve got this incredible bill, which just got better when news was announced today that Austin’s She Sir would join the bill. All you have to do is leave us a comment with your favorite new jam of 2014. We’ll close the contest Friday at midnight, then contact the winners.  Show is at Red 7, and it starts at 9 PM.

Night DriveRed Bull Sound Select took over the Spider House Ballroom. In exchange for your information on the intarwebs, you could check out three great bands for $3. On the agenda was The Black and White Years, Night Drive and The Octopus Project.

RSVP DOES NOT GUARANTEE ENTRY

The line started at around 6:30pm for 9pm doors and some that got in line closer to show time to see the bands in a 350 person venue were going to be disappointed. My only disappointment was a late-running schedule that forced my early exit before The Octopus Project could take the stage; the following day was a really long one and it took discipline to leave when I did. Nate and I had a sweet bit of fun at a dance party and we both left with the impression that Night Drive is poised for explosion.

Free Week Video: Jonly Bonly

Jonly BonlyOne of our favorite things from Free Week this year was the set at Red7 by Jonly Bonly. The trio is fronted by Jason Smith playing a guitar and singing with friends and fellow Austin-jams creators Stephen Svacina playing a bass and Marley Jones on drums. I busted out the super phone and got some video to share. This song is called “Long Distance.”

There are some sweet pyrotechnics during the guitar solo and a lightshow at the end. #blackcat #powerstripfailure

A Giant DogA lot of the folks in Austin filled their quota for January rock shows during Free Week, but in case you didn’t get your fill, there are some rad shows happening around town, including a few bands throwing an old school house party for your pleasure. Looking at this show line-up, attending this set on a Thursday night seems like a no-brainer to me.  You get the Amputees, who will be playing a three day residency in Austin, plus other really incredible acts that should already be on your radar at this point.  There’s She Sir, who we’ve already told you are set for a big year with their up-copming release, Go Guitars.  And, you’ll get to see Ruby Fray, who won tons of people over during her Free Week appearances, so there’s really no reason to skip it.  Make it a fun night, and hit up the show.

Our friends at Red Bull are presenting a nice little locals action to show off the talent brewing around here; this is a dance party version.

You get The Octopus Project, Night Drive and The Black & White Years. You can RSVP here. Why RSVP, you ask? Because with RSVP, you get in for $3 instead of $10 and you get to download a song from each of the artists. I mean, that is like actually buying three songs and getting to go to a show for free.

I have a feeling things will get crowded quick so be early and be cool. The Octupus Project doesn’t have any more shows listed after this, Night Drive sounded great at Red7 the other night and The Black & White Years have new hits. In fact, here is a track you should hear from B&WY…
