Austin Show Preview: Grape St. @ Hotel Vegas (11/2)

Grape St.I’m feeling local this weekend, and though there are a couple of interesting traveling tours coming into town (Those Darlins/The Blow), I really think your best bet is to end up at Hotel Vegas on Saturday night. Some of our favorite bands will be playing that evening; these are bands we’ve supported in some fashion since we started this site. You’ll get to catch Booher, which is the new project from former Zykos member, M. Booher.  Plus, you’ll get Frank Smith, who’ve put out tons of great songs, all of which we’ve enjoyed.  Headlining the night will be another band we clearly support, as we helped the band put out their self-titled LP: Grape St.  They’ve only gotten better over the last year, and you should expect a full house to bring things to a riotous evening. And, it’s going to be cheap, so why not hit up a great local show?!

Contest! Win a Pair of Tickets to See Crocodiles @ Empire Room (10.31)

CrocodilesSo you’re not really the Halloween sort, or maybe you are.  What we do know is that you need to enjoy rock n’ roll in some manner, otherwise it wouldn’t the crazy night we all expect! We’ve got a deal for you; you can win a pair of tickets to see Crocodiles at Empire Room…FREE.  The band comes in town to support their recent Crimes of Passion LP, and they’ll be joined by Royal Bangs and local act Growl.  It seems perfect if you’re looking for last minute plans to come together.  All you have to do is leave a comment telling us what you’ll be for Halloween, or what you hope people don’t wear as a costume.  Either way, you have the best idea, you have a free pair of tickets.  If you want to go the traditional way, you can grab tickets from Knuckle Rumbler, who’s helping us with this contest (thanks Aaron).

Show Pics: Holy Ghost! @ Emo’s (10/24)

Crystal Stilts. Quite a change up from what I was shooting just before heading to downtown proper.

I have been digging on the new wave disco vibes from Holy Ghost! since first hearing “Hold On” as a demo. I knew nothing about Midnight Magic, but Orthy is an easy sell for me to get out early. In fact, I was standing in the crowd and looked over and noticed Alex from Holy Ghost! standing next to me. Turns out they are fans of Orthy, too, so they decided to have the Ian and the band join along for the Texas dates.

Emo’s played host. Plenty of pics and a few notes from the evening follow…

Show Preview: Desaparecidos @ Mohawk (10/30)

desap

Date Wednesday, October 30th
Location Mohawk
Doors 6:30
Tickets $25 from Mohawk

I don’t understand why this show hasn’t sold out yet, so be warned, you better grab the last remaining tickets as soon as you can.  Desaparecidos rose to prominence long ago, as singer Conor Oberst star also began to rise nationally.  But, as soon as they rose, they disappeared, much like their name would imply…many of their fans were never able to catch the act live.  Now’s your chance, and if you needed more convincing, just check out the openers.  I’ve not got too much info on Purple, but I’ve loved everything that’s come our way from The So-So Glos. They’ve won over fans on their brief stops through town, and they’ll definitely be an important part of what I can only expect is an incredible evening.  Cheers to Transmission for bringing them all to Austin.

Friday’s Local Austin Gigs!

austin-skyline-mark-weaverWe’ve been working harder this year on being sure we get more coverage going, not just internationally, but locally as well.  With that in mind, I wanted to point out a couple of shows that are desperately seeking your attendance on Friday night, in case you didn’t have plans. These shows all offer a bit of different sounds, but each features some of our favorite local acts, so be sure to do your best to support our local scene.  Or, you could go see Widespread Panic.  Seems like an easy choice to me, but it’s your life! Here’s my suggestions on what to hit up:

Flesh Lights, Church Shoes, Sweat Lodge, Ghost Dance, John Schooley @ Hotel Vegas – Doors are at 9 PM – $6

Junior Prom, The Laughing, Migrant Kids @ Holy Mountain – Doors are at 8 PM – Cheap

Genuine Leather, Ponderosa, The Hereticks @ The Parish Underground – Doors are at 8 PM – Cheap

The Couch, Letting Up Despite Great Faults, Major Major Major @ The Blackheart – Doors are 8 PM – FREE!

Here are some jams by Letting Up to get you in the mood.

Show Preview: Holy Ghost @ Emo’s (10.24)

We have some dancing to do.

Holy Ghost! last came to town in support of New Order. It was a great opening slot for them, save for one thing – they didn’t have all the new jams ready to unleash. Don’t get me wrong, I love the s/t, but I want to hear the new stuff. I am ready to dance to Dynamics.

Orthy will have their 12″ up for sale and Midnight Magic are road companions. Holy Ghost! has a knack for picking interesting openers so show up early.
