Well, the traveling acts might have ceased for the holiday season, but that doesn’t mean that there aren’t tons of local bands doing their thing here in Austin. Of Montreal is notorious for putting on lovely and bizarre shows. Mixing theatrical shenanigans, hippy jam band lighting, punk show crowd energy and props to keep you invested, there is rarely a dull moment as props, projectors and extras fill your eyes as the band puts forth another solid sounding set. French Horn Rebellion had opening duties.

In search for your favorite hyper-literate performer? Well, you can find John Darnielle and his band, The Mountain Goats, at Emos on Wednesday night. John and friends just released Transcendental Youth via his current label, Merge Records. While the band can probably be considered to have sort of a cult following, I personally feel that Darnielle is an underrated lyricist (more to my liking than a certain Mr. Meloy). Accompanying the group as openers will be Matthew E. White, which, according to the stuff I’ve listened to, should be quite an extravagant affair. This is one of those shows that might have fallen off people’s radars, but if you miss out on it, you’re going to have to hear from your friends how incredible the evening was.

Whether you choose to be a fan of the constantly evolving band Of Montreal or not probably remains irrelevant at this point in the year. Mohawk is winding down their outdoor show schedule for 2012, and this is pretty much a must attend show. Kevin Barnes and company are always extremely entertaining, and you never know quite what you get when you see the group live. Are there going to be elaborate costumes? Maybe. Will the tunes be enjoyable? Yes! You should just do yourself a favor and show up. French Horn Rebellion will be opening the evening up, making this a great bill. Oh, and Kevin Barnes will be DJing at a very hip after-party over at Red 7 following the show!

After the dance party last Wednesday night, Nathan and I decided to go local and take a stab at the new venue living in Beauty Bar’s space on 7th, Holy Mountain. The bands on the bill were certainly worth two nights in a row of missing a few hours of sleep. Letting Up Despite Great Faults has one of our favorite local records of the year and She Sir played our SxSW showcase a few years back, even lending gear to use for the night, and have recently busted out a few new tracks.

If only I was in town Saturday night, I’d surely be at the Parish on Saturday night for a nostalgic show featuring David Bazan playing the Pedro the Lion classic Control. Now I don’t see any word of an opener on the website, so attendees are all in for a special treat to take us back to our younger days. My apologies for those of you without tickets, because the show is sold out. This show post made me go back and listen to that classic album from 2002, and you should really be there to relive the glory.

For me, seeing The Faint was a necessity and a desire, nostalgically taking me back to early 2000 and my discovery of the group via Saddle Creek fandom. They came into a packed house at Emos on Wednesday night to relive the hits from Danse Macabre. They brought with them Icky Blossoms and Trust, so it was a solid line-up for all.

Thursday nights are always good for rock n’ roll, but in this case, it’s good for an upbeat evening with some electronic stylings brought to you by How to Dress Well. After releasing Total Loss this year, the band’s star has begun to rise, though the group’s blend of electronica is a lot more soulful than much of the work out there. The show also features our local favorites, Royal Forest, and a band we’ve recently taken a liking to, Beacon. If you’re looking for a show to attend, you can’t go wrong by hitting up the Mohawk.

Listen folks, if you’re in Austin, and you consider yourself a music fan, then you have a moral obligation to being at this show. First, Letting Up Despite Great Faults moved to our town from LA, and since then, they’ve done wonders, releasing the excellent Untogether this year; it’s one of my favorite records of the year, period. Second, our old friends in She Sir are gearing up to take over the town with their upcoming album (early 2013); we ran their killer new single yesterday. These are two of Austin’s finest bands, and there’s no cover at all, so you can’t really come up with a proper excuse, can you? Oh, and Holy Mountain will have $2 Lone Star. Cheap drinks, great music, no excuses. Be there.

Way back before it was cool to be doing elctronica music, The Faint were mixing dance beats and punk rock attitude, which birthed Danse Macabre; it’s one of my favorite records of the early 00s. They’ll be bringing that excellent record back to the stage at Emo’s on Wednesday, along with some other rad bands to make those dance-aholics happy. Label mates Icky Blossoms will be opening the evening, followed by our new favorites from Fun Fest, TRUST. It’s going to be a night to revel in the joys of bands touring behind old records and a night to don your dancing shoes. Let’s do this.
