Surprising Psych Gem from The Numerators

130405-numeratorsOkay, I’m being honest here. When I think of Lubbock, I occasionally think of Buddy Holly, but I almost never think of music.  That’s not the problem of The Numerators, and in fact, I don’t think the band could even care about what us Austinites think.  What we can say is that their hazy pysch rocker is sure to raise some eyebrows, and I’ll admit right off the bat that it’s a pretty respectable gem, which will be released as part of Suicide Squeeze Single Series. Personally, I think it’s a great thing when a band can shut the world up just with their music, so I’ll happily insert foot in mouth and let you guys enjoy the tune.

Sad Bastard Perfection from Gambles

653Rarely do I get overwhelmed by a track.  Sure, an album can do it, but a song’s got to be pretty incredible in order to floor me from the first listen.  That being said, I think one of the best songs I’ve heard this year is the latest single that’s been floating around from Gambles.  The man behind the music, Matthew Siskin, will be releasing the Far From Your Arms EP on May 7th, and the title track is  a must have in your daily listening rotation. There’s something about the frailty in the vocal, pushed to the front by the soft guitar strumming; it all creates this emotion that’s hard to put into words, other than the fact that it creates musical chills. Listen to this song again and again.

Let’s Rock with Hussy

trackshussy_fullsize_story1Had a late night last evening, so I, like many of you, will need a good pick me up this morning.  What better way to start off than this new noisy rocker from the Hussy. They’ve got a new record titled Pagan Hiss, which will be released on May 7th by Southpaw Records.  This song has a weird bit of garage rock blended with some stuttering math rock guitar lines.  You’ll find the vocals extremely similar to other acts around, which should make it super easy for you attach yourself to this tune, not to mention it’s just a rad rock track to play so you can annoy the guy in the cubicle next to you.

More New Music From Saturday Looks Good To Me

Saturday+Looks+Good+to+MeI mentioned awhile back how excited I was to hear that Saturday Looks Good to Me are back on the indie music scene with some tasty pop music.  Already we’ve heard new song “Invisible Friend” and today we get this fun pop song “Break In”.  I love that this band continues to make beautiful and catchy pop songs that anyone would be hard pressed to resist.  I dare you to resist!

As previously mentioned, new album One Kiss Ends it All will be available on May 21st via Polyvinyl Records.

Sweeping Pop from Seatraffic

TempoOfRegret_artworkI’ve written about my love for Seatraffic before, and as the band continues to work hard on their single series, I’ve got another great tune to share with you.  I like the expansiveness of this track, using a trickling bit of keyboard to allow room for the floating harmonies to move in and out of the track.  Vocals are slow moving, matching the pace that the music (and artwork) emits.  They’ve also got an accompanying video for the song that you can view HERE.  Don’t forget to stop by the group’s BANDCAMP page to pick up all their new singles by kindly donating what you can spare.

Weekend Gets Mellow–Sort Of

weekOkay, so 24 hours later and this track is probably old news, but you can’t escape the fact that it’s simply just a great song.  While the first Weekend effort was simply noisy, it looks like the next effort is going to perhaps go a little softer, maybe.  Yes, there’s that dark sense of post-punk brooding from the start, but a little bit into the track and the guitar begins to soften the approach, cutting in and out of the background.  And when you hear the vocals, it’s a nice change to hear the clarity, though the affecting quality still remains.  The band will release their second LP, Jinx, via Slumberland Records on July 23rd–get ready to rave about this release.

Straight Rock N’ Roll from Turf War

TurfWar_PressPhoto1.180040One of the many acts that I think is severely overlooked is Turf War. Their first album Years of Living Dangerously still manages to make its way deep into my playlist, years later I might added.  They’ve just announced they’ll be releasing The Great Escape EP, and I’m stoked to see that things haven’t changed much.  When I hear them, I tend to think of straight rock sounds a la the Replacements, but I can also hear bits of blues and country lurking back in their somewhere…you combine it all and you’re bound to have a winner.  I’m guessing a new LP is right around the corner, and I’m placing my bets that it’s going to knock your socks off.

Welcome Back Kids on a Crime Spree

kidsWhere have these guys been?  It’s been almost two years since we last heard from Kids on a Crime Spree, and I’m ecstatic that the band is back today.  Their sound compiles elements of hazy guitar pop with bouncing rhythms and floating vocals, all of which guarantee a hit over at the ATH offices…and hopefully beyond.  The group has a brand new Creeps the Creep 7″ that comes your way next week courtesy of the most excellent, Slumberland Records.  Hopefully this great tunes is just a hint at great things to come from the group in 2013.

Soulful Hit from Cool Ghouls

LP_FrontCover_350While reading the press release for Cool Ghouls the name Tim Cohen was mentioned; that sold me from the get-go, but the song itself pushed my fandom even further.  On their new single, the band combines psychedelia elements with true country tunes, all the while piling up some great musical accompaniment to fill out their sound.  It’s a song with soul and swagger all in one, keeping things interesting for all of those taking the time to enjoy great music.  On April 23rd, the band will release their self-titled record via Empty Cellar Records, so keep that on your radar if you know what’s good for you.

Spirited Americana from Christopher Paul Stelling

falsecitiesFollowers of ATH will surely note that we’ve always had a soft spot for well-written Americana, which is precisely what comes to mind when I listen to Christopher Paul Stelling. There’s a certain raspiness to his vocals that provides the spirit and soul to this track, and I like the quickness of the guitar playing.  You can hear faint bits of tambourine or cymbal in the background, but the special moment comes near the end.  Here you’ll find Stelling straining his voice and his pace to put every drop of emotion into this track.  If you dig it, his new album False Cities will be out on May 21st.
