Pleased to Meet You: Frontperson

Let’s get niceties out of the way; pleased to meet you, Frontperson. Wait! This band is Kathryn Calder and Mark Andrew Hamilton from Woodpigeon forging out as a unit? And Stereogum premiered their video over Kanye news!? Honestly, I’m just being a dick, but I really like this track. Even though the band features Kathryn from New Pornos, the tune seems to have this early Broken Social Scene feel…maybe it’s that underlying groove during the verses…regardless, it gives the song that hook. I also think Calder’s voice has this delicate sharpness that contrasts perfectly with Hamilton’s. Together the two will release Frontrunner on Oscar St. Records.

New Ty Segall and White Fence Single

Sometimes I think Ty Segall is too prolific for his own good, but when he’s joining up with Tim Presley aka White Fence, I can definitely get behind that. This track almost sounds like it’s acoustic punk filled with furious strumming, but you can hear the influence of Presley, particularly in the very post-punk yelps and the delivery of the first chorus. Don’t worry, you get a Ty-esque solo in the last seconds of the song, just to whet your appetite. Together, Ty Segall and White Fence will release Joy on July 20th via Drag City.

The Skating Party Drop Been Caught Feeling

If you’re looking for a new pop group to get into, you needn’t look beyond The Skating Party…especially now that they’ve got a brand new LP ready to rock for you. The album’s lead single has a dreamy quality to it, at least in the way the vocals were recorded…but the details are where it’s at. I like the hi-hat work and the cascading guitar line in the distance; it’s dream pop, yet it seems to have some looped jazz qualities. It’s adventurous pop music for those willing to step out on a limb; you can grab Been Caught Feeling from Hidden Gem Records now!

Nice Rocker from Sauropod

  1. I don’t know too much about Oslo-based Sauropod, but I feel like I need some sort of noisy rocker to kick start Monday. It’s a guitar-pop masterpiece pulling on fuzzy guitar lines and a catch chorus that sounds a lot like Nirvana’s “Sliver.” I can’t help myself, however, I just want to turn it up and sing along like some freed juvenile. Plus, the grunge rockers are giving a message within the confines of this number, offering their proposed retribution for men who assault women. Hooks and a message? Happy Monday. Look for their self-titled EP to drop on August 24th via Propeller.

Her’s Release A Playful Track

A piece of straight-up playful pop has been unleashed upon the world. Our friends over at Heist or Hit sent word of the latest track from Her’s, a band that has 100% been on the hit side of that label name for the ATH team. The full-length Invitation to Her’s drops August 24th. Starting with a little bit of Casio keyboard drum machine and hook, “Harvey” charms you like a happy secret. It is a pleasant three and half minutes well worth your investment on a Thursday.

New Me Prep 7″ for Bleeding Gold

If you haven’t heard of New Me yet, that’s perfectly okay as the band’s fairly fresh to the scene. The band are currently in promotion road, as they have a 7″ coming your way fair soon, so we figured we’d give you a sneak peak. Upon pressing play, you’re met with a few quick sections of electronic pulses just before the guitars begin to dance around your eardrums. And then singer Jakob makes his presence known, presenting his deepened tones that at times share similarities with Spencer Krug. His performance aids to the dreamy element, almost haunting the track in a sense as it tries to keep pace with the frantic pace of the rhythm section. Energetic and dark, you’ll want to grab this 7″ before its gone; grab it HERE from Bleeding Gold before the August 31st release date.

Primo Ready Release of Debut

Strangely, was just having a discussion the other day, or a listing party rather, of great Australian acts currently working over there…I’d now like to add Primo to my list. The Melbourne based group are about to drop Amici next week, and what better way to start your day then with a little preview. The opening distorted guitar solo might lead you the wrong way, switching immediately to this bubbling wonk of a guitar line that’s most assuredly going to have your toes wearing holes in the floor. In the chorus you get a smoother pop vibe, almost entrancing you before bounding back to the energetic pulse of the tune. Upset the Rhythm drop Amici on July 13th.

Santiparro Releases New Single, Readies LP

  1. Way back in 2015, Santiparro released the spiritual folk masterpiece, True Prayer; I raved about it over and over. But, in about a month he’ll be releasing his brand new LP, The Talon, and we’ll gladly support the artist again. The below single is indicative of his markedly new approach this go round, branching out into new sonic territory through his close work with produce J Ashley Miller. The opening minute uses a guitar in the distance with some sort of electronic gurgling lurking as Santiparro lets his voice search for that spiritual high ground. Strings momentarily envelope the sound, and you can feel the song beginning to build into an extravagant pop opus. Not surprisingly, he still seems to be seeking a better world, for himself and for us…one of the many reasons I’m still drawn to his work. The Talon might be his bravest work to date, so be sure to keep a look out for it on August 3rd; pre-order HERE.

Bodega Drop a New Track

Up until this point, Bodega have given us some great arty-punk stylings, catchy and thought provoking. But, destined to be more than a one-trick pony, the group are sharing their most straightforward pop song just before the album gets dropped. This song is Ben’s homage to a friend he lost back in 2007, and you can hear the lasting impact Charlie had on him…if you’ve lost someone in your own life, you can immediately relate to the lyrical content, as if it was ripped from your own journal. It’s good to see the softer side of the group, a sign that you can still be surprised by the New York outfit. Endless Scroll drops this Friday via What’s Your Rupture.
