Bedroom Pop from Wilt

  1. Some tunes you just want to listen to in solitude, keeping them to yourself. It sounds to me like this Wilt track falls into that vein, particularly with the way the vocals are recorded…almost whispered through your speakers. There’s an accumulation of atmospherics that swirl above the guitar line in the middle, blissfully drawing you deep within the song. I kind of picture Wilt opening up for Pinback…same vibe, only softer and more introspective. Look for the debut LP Hand Mirror via Good Cheer Records on August 4th.

Did You Watch This New Alvvays Video?

This may be yesterday’s news, but when a band that delivers a debut album that’s full of pop hits and then follows up as triumphantly as Alvvays has, I feel like more people should take notice. We’ve already been graced with the audio of this song, but then the band doubled down and went the extra mile with this dreamy video for “In Undertow” that they shared yesterday. The cosmic video makes me think that they have taken their already soaring indie pop a step further into the stars on their upcoming sophomore release,Antisocialites, which will be out September 8 viaPolyvinyl.I’m stoked for that release–are you?

Haunted Summer Brings The Haze

I don’t know about you, but when I step outside to an oven breeze and an oppressive sun all I want to listen to is hazy rock and roll. Good thing Haunted Summer have a new track to help me, and hopefully you, out. “Every Step” is a fuzzy, high octane hit that transitions to a slow burner near its end. It’s got psych guitars, ghoulish vocals that breathe live into the song, and enough variation to hold your attention through the end.

It’s a great track, taken from the band’s upcoming full-length,Spirit Guides, which will be out September 29. Check it out below.

Check the New Small World Experience Video

  1. Just recently we were alerted to the first Small World Experience LP in a really really long time! Today we’ve got a great video from one of the album’s standout tunes, “Daily Grind.” The song itself recalls those days of no bullshit guitar pop, the sort where folks turned the mundane into the endearing (TV Personalities come to mind for some reason). That fits the video’s image too, offering a casual day in the life of our protagonist-songwriter. Soft Knocks has been released unto the world via Tenth Court/The Business, begging for you to discover its secret joys.

Ferocious New Single From Club Night

Oakland based outfit Club Night sent over this new single called “Rally” and it’s definitely worth your time. It reminds me of a band like Dirty Projectors with it’s spastic tendency, but also offers some really intense, loud, noise rock. As I continue to give it spin after spin, I’m finding new things to like about it and enjoy each time. I suggest you check it out now.

Club Night will release Debut EP Hell Ya in August via Tiny Engines.

Dreamy New Single From TRASH

Anyone in need of a new summer jam to take into the weekend? Well look no further than this new single “81” from Chesterfield based indie group TRASH. It’s so bright, sunny, and dream inducing, it makes me want to jump in the car and hit the open road. This one should be sliding into your summer playlist immediately. Hit play below.

TRASH plan to release a self-titled EP on August 11th via Clue Records.

Guitar Pop from Birdskulls

You’re going to immediately recognize the vibe in this brand new Birdskulls song; it’s everything you love from bands like Dinosaur Jr, Weezer and Teenage Fanclub…and its filled with the hooks too! I love the vibe here, both youthful and nostalgic…perfect for air musicianship as you bounce around your bedroom. If this is something you dig, I suggest you keeping your eyes on the folks over at Art Is Hard Records, who will be releasing the band’s new EP later this Autumn.

Fresh Video from Michael Beach

Australia’s Michael Beach was living in Oakland for a bit, and he was fortunate to lay down his next record with members of Comets on Fire and Meercaz. Today he’s dropped the animated video for his ode to friendship, and its great in two ways: 1) you get to listen to the really killer song 2) the video rules, making me feel like this sort of animation is under-utilized. This track has a great energy, and reminds me of our local friends A. Sinclair in its straightforward approach to good rock n’ roll. Michael will release Gravity/Repulsion, his next LP, this coming September!

Epic New Single From Sam Coffey & The Iron Lungs

Man Toronto based outfit Sam Coffey & The Iron Lungs have just killed it with this new single “Ragnarok”. When discussing the new generation of power pop music, songs like this need to be mentioned before any other. If for some reason that style of music isn’t for you, well move on and let the rest of chant along and enjoy ourselves. Epic. Fun. Carry on.

Sam Coffey & The Iron Lungs will release a self-titled LP on July 28th via Burger Records.

Never a Bad Day for a Fresh and Onlys Tune

While my fandom for Fresh and Onlys is pretty well-known by this point, I think their new LP could definitely turn more heads. On their latest single, you’ll hear a clarity that’s been building since the band’s earliest days. Still, they bring in these hook-laden riffs/vocals during the chorus…possibly offering the most pop moment of the band’s lengthy career. Honestly, it sounds like they removed the distortion from aTerry Malts record, and slowed things down…which in my mind is pretty fucking cool. Look for Wolf Lie Down to hit stores on August 25th via Sinderlyn.
