ATX Spotlight: Enchanting Tune from Wiretree

Wow. I did not expect to fall in love with this new Wiretree so quickly. This song, while brief, is the perfect bit of pop music. In seconds, it builds anticipation, leaving plenty of space for the vocals to sweep you off your feet. I love how some vocal notes are accentuated by piano notes and pronounced strums. There’s such a lightheartedness to it that it reminds me of the Wrens, though with a touch more polish. Before you know it, the song wraps up, and you rush back to hit play again. Rest assured, your ears aren’t fooling you; this song is that good!

Premiere: Mountain Movers to Release New LP

There’s sprawling rock for self-indulgence, and then there’s Mountain Movers. The New Haven band has just announced they’ll be releasing their new self-titled album via Trouble in Mind Records. This brand new single is a 7 minute opus, stretched out over little psychedelic jams and nonchalant vocal delivery. It’s a crazy beautiful world where the likes of Sonic Youth and Spiritualized are hanging out, trying to deconstruct the modern psych tropes. Dan Greene, the song’s guitarist and vocalist, says the song is about “trouble-makers who follow their vision into unknown world despite the dangers ahead.” My ears welcome that journey into the “unknown world,” awaiting more expansive tunes to open my mind. Join me and grab the band’s album HERE, or wait until it hits your local shop on May 5th.

Upbeat Pop from Tyler Martin

Tyler Martin, a member of indie rockers James Rabbit, is out to one-up Stephin Merritt. Stephin’s Magnetic Fields song is bringing a new 50 song album next week, but this week, Tyler is releasing Cioppino, a 100 song album of the most diverse pop hits you’ll find. It’s one thing to write that many tunes, but the fact that they’re great, only makes the accomplishment all the better. This single has remnants of Ted Leo in the vocals, emphatic in delivery, while the music offers this shimmering boogie. Lost Sound Tapes is releasing an awesome 4 tape package, containing all 100 songs; pick it up HERE.

Dreamy Rock From Thunder Dreamer

When you’re scanning through all the songs you’re exposed to on the internet, it’s kind of hard for a band to stand out from the masses and really grab your attention from the opening moments of the song. However, this song, “Capture,” from Indiana’s Thunder Dreamer manages to do the near impossible. Soft piano, delicate guitar, and a waltz-esque beat pulls you in for the beginning portion of the song and then the band really jumps in. Those guitars launch back in, now with a bite and a snarl, and the piano drives at a bounce. The vocals are reminiscent of James Mercer and add the perfect sheen to the number. Take a listen below and make sure you get behind Thunder Dreamer before their albumCapturecomes out May 26th via 6131 Records. I’ll have my ear to the ground for future tunes from the band.

Did You Hear That New Darling Buds Tune

The Darling Buds are here to bring you back to nostalgic pop music, offering up a brand new EP that’s filled with hook-laden guitar stabs and a sultry vocal that seemed to be on every soundtrack of the 90s. But, if you know the history of the band, and the likes of John Peel, you know that everyone was probably ripping this group off, whether they knew it or not. This is their big return, some of the first we’ve heard from them in 25 years. You know you want it, and you can have it, but only on tape, as the 10″ version from Oddbox Records is already sold out. Here you go folks, thank us later.

Dance Pop from R. Missing

Just want to post all the songs, all the time. What I really want to post is this subtle dance pop from R. Missing, known in some circles as The Ropes. The electronic element of pop is pretty much in line with other like-minded acts, though there’s not a driving propulsion, letting the melody come across passively. One of the reasons the tune struck me was the darkened weariness of the vocals; they’re almost haunting, but ultimately intoxicating for listeners. Just a one-off single for now, but a damn fine one.

SXSW Interview: The National Parks

I wasn’t kidding when I said multiple interviews would be coming soon highlighting some of the bands coming to SXSW in a couple weeks. This year I sent out questions to any band interested, even if the band was totally unfamiliar to me prior to the interview or their style wasnt necessarily my favorite. I figure this will allow for more exposure and interesting responses from a wider variety of artists. Today we continue our ongoing effort to provide you interesting SXSW interviews with indie folk band The National Parks. Hit the jump to see whats what.
