New Video from El Campo + Show Preview

elcampEl Campo came onto my radar a few years ago with a little work they did for Punctum Records, but the band has been really hard at work over the last year, touring all over, and even having time to sit together and record this track off their recent Double AA record. I love the video, illustrating not only the pop-centric Americana, but the bond of friendship shared by the band members themselves. This is our, and your, first glimpse of the family-style video…hopefully it point out why you should check these boys out. Oh, and where can you see them? They’re playing this Friday night at Lamberts with Wiretree. Doors for the show are at 10 PM (More info HERE). See you there? If not, grab the new AA record HERE.

More From DTCV

untitledMan I don’t know exactly what it is about all these new DTCV tunes, but I can’t seem to stop playing them over and over again. Maybe it’s the wall of guitars, or maybe it’s the fact that I can’t understand some of the music? Either way, I can’t resist this stuff. If you take yourself further down this post, you will find their latest single called “Histoire seule”. Once again we are treated to a beauty of a song which strikes me with it’s drastic tempo changes and heavy guitars. Ya dig?

Confusion Moderne comes out on April 8th Xemu.

Brand New Gorgeous Bully Track

vinylObviously I’ve had a thing for Gorgeous Bully for the last few years, so I was excited to learn they were readying a split for Art is Hard Records. I feel like this takes on a slight twist in the band’s sound, which is definitely allowed for someone who seems to write non-stop. Still, lurking beneath the foggy vocals is an ode to pop music and melody, whilst the guitars churn and the percussion crashes around. They’ll be splitting this release with Something Anorak, which comes out on a limited cherry-red 7″ on May 27th.

Listening to SHYA

shyaI came across SHYA by checking in on DZ Tapes, the label responsible for the delightful debut by Romantic States. It’s a bedroom pop project, but there’s more of a focus on songwriting rather than just synthesized sounds billowing out. Some of the tracks have this down-trodden Mac Demarco feel, while others have a brighter spotlight that billow forth. This reminds me of what being in your bedroom writing songs should always be about; it’s personable, relatable and leaves you longing for more. Trying, the LP, is now available via DZ by going HERE.

New Music from Fascinations Grand Chorus

fascinationsFascinations Grand Chorus is two players, Stephanie and Andrew. They use keyboards and drums to craft their sound. That being said, this isn’t a Mates of State redux; it’s a construction of pop structures taking nods to punk rock and psychedelia. All that being said, I’m really stuck on the emphatic vocal performance of Stephanie on this song; she’s playful yet pitch-perfect. This is our first listen to the band since announcing their debut self-titled EP, and it’s a bright start that promises more great things to come from the band in the future. Listen up.

Steady Holiday Announces Debut

dreThe story goes that while Dre Babinski was playing about LA, she longed for her own voice, a place to call her own, musically speaking…and now we have Steady Holiday. I think we’ll all be grateful that she did, as this new single is a sultry piece of lounge pop that’s pretty inescapable. Beneath the mix, and taking on a role of its own is this knifing guitar chord, moving here, moving there, subtly. I like the way it contrasts with Dre’s flawless vocals that soothe your ears throughout. Her debut album, Under the Influence will be out via Infinite Best on June 24th.

Gotta Share A New Track From Twin Peaks

unnamed-35Your favorite group of youthful rambunctious rebel rousers from Chicago, Twin Peaks, have got a new single! It’s called “Butterfly” and it’s every bit as exciting as you’d expect from the group, while somehow waxing a little bit softer in the middle of the track. The song has got that grungey garage aesthetic that the band does so well, and features distorted guitars running rampant throughout. I’m quite impressed with the subtle percussion on this track as well, and the way the band switches it up a little in the middle to keep you interested.

Their newest and upcoming album, Down in Heaven, is out May 13th via Grand Jury. Get stoked.

Show Preview: Kindatheart @ Mohawk (Tonight!)

12885771_1004034949689769_3802782784501058910_oLocal pop music has me excited, with tons of new bands brewing about town with hits galore. Kindatheart is one such young band, bringing upbeat pop rock of the indiepop ilk, even including some trading male/female vocal harmonies to boot! Of course, I’d be remiss to not mention two of the other acts taking part; Wildfires and Rose Selavy. Rose Selavy are great friends of ours, and the band is currently in the studio working on finishing touches for what we believe is a debut LP. It’s cheap, doors are at 8 PM, and you can go home feeling good about your life. Stream this sampler EP from Kindatheart to get a feel for the night’s vibes.

Can’t Resist This Pop Punk From White Lung

unnamed-34White Lung are on the way to releasing a new album in May, and while they’re in the lead up to said album, they’ve given us two new singles. The second of which, I am glad to share with you today, is called “Kiss Me When I Bleed” and is a little over two minutes of high-energy pop punk. The song features such excellent lyrics as “I will give birth in a trailer/huffing the gas in the air” and the vocals are this twisted and distorted mix of sinister edge, adding the perfect compliment to the screaming guitars and bombastic percussion. Their upcoming record, Paradise, is out May 6th via Domino Records.

More Chris Cohen? Yes, Please!

chrisA few years ago, I was milling about at SXSW trying to catch every band between Hotel Vegas and Volstead. Like many a year, you could easily pinpoint a sound, until I caught Chris Cohen playing. I stopped in my tracks, drawn to the gentle voice floating from the stage; it’s much the way I spent today when I heard his newest single. There’s a calm to it, something almost effortless in every musical move he makes. You’ll likely hear notes of Dent May or Jens Lekman on this track, although I think Chris takes more of a turn away from the pop-centric vibe. His new album, As If Apart, is being releasing on May 6th via Captured Tracks, and you can bet we’ll be playing it to the max.
