Brand New Spook School

You know The Spook Schoolis one of my favorite bands of the moment. I quietly (or not so) tracked the band all around town during SXSW, even throwing a couple of shows together, just so they’d have a happy home. Well, news breaks today that the band have a brand new couple of songs appearing on the Continental Drift Compilation via Slumberland and Fortuna Pop. They’re debuting it via video, which is perfect, as you can clearly sense the band’s enjoyment/humor coming through in the clips; it’s one of the things that also makes them such a special live band. Look for the compilation in August…but for now, just relish in the fact that great pop bands still exist. Also, sorry for the over-abundance of FPop stuff today, but when you got it, you got it.

Single Premiere: Residuels

unnamed (3)My old friend Mike, formerly of Night Panther, pointed me towardsthis new project of his the other day. Going by the name Residuels, the group play their very own version of garage inspired, guitar heavy rock and roll music. Today I’m pleased to share with you their rockin’ new single entitled “Ordinary”. I’m immediately having this image of a snarling lead singer with a backing band who are keeping the energy levels turned to 11. Impressive debut guys.

This song is part of a 7″ single release on vinyl which can be purchased from Born Losers Records here right now. Official ship date is Friday, May 13th.

Even More from Red Sleeping Beauty

redsleepingAfter announcing their return with a few new tracks, it’s clear that Red Sleeping Beauty are making a full-fledged return, and thank god for that. This is some of my favorite pop music, both in style and in general; there’s an electronic pulse and a phenomenal melody that one can’t deny when it comes through their speakers. There’s a purity to it, and in that, I find myself pining for the release of the band’s new album, Kristina. This record will be released by the super-reliable Shelflife on June 17th.

Old Track from Angry Angles (ft. Jay Reatard)

angry-angles-cover-5x5I miss Jay Reatard. There was something pure and powerful in everything he wrote, and while it’s unfortunate that one has to go back and revisit his old projects before his fame broke, at least we can be grateful that they get to see the light of day. Angry Angles was his final project before going out wholly on his own, featuring Alix Brown of the Lids, and it definitely serves as the final notice to what was coming. There’s that distinctive guitar tone; there’s also a quality of evil and anxiety that fits in his lyrical work at this time (and in future works). I love the fact that this also displays his ability to go completely off the rails, yet have control of everything around him at the same time. Goner Records will be releasing a compilation of every piece of recorded material Angry Angles was able to put together in its short span; it comes out on May 20th.

New Music from Darren Hayman

darrenOne of my favorite tracks of the last few years is “Boy, Look at What You Can’t Have Now,” which features Darren Hayman (as well as Emma Kupa), so I’ve kept a close eye on the hard-working music vet. Just yesterday, the esteemed Fortuna Pop upped a cover version of “I”ve Been a Bad Bad Boy” by Paul Jones; it’s a new track from Darren Hayman that he recorded with Papernut Cambridge (a band he drums for) as his backing band. It’s a delightful cover, focused around Hayman’s distinctive voice, providing just a hint of swing to it. The label will be releasing the 7″ on May 20th as part of their Jukebox 45 Single Series…and it’ll be very limited on purple vinyl, so rush on over there.

Pecan Street Musings

Pecan Street 29The lineup for Pecan Street Festival was quite ATH friendly. Given that two of the wife’s favorite Austin acts, Night Drive and Knifight, were scheduled for set times that book-ended the dinner hour a couple blocks from Parkside, we figured we would take in all that Sixth could offer before it got dirteh.

Thoughts, pics, etc.

Listen in to Landlines

landlinesLandlines is just another one of the many Portland bands that people are going to have to get to know, even if they’re not immediately on the public radar. Musically, I guess you’d describe their sound as casual guitar rock, working on rising harmonies that work to beat the guitar’s to the song’s climax. It’s all about pop sensibility and songwriting, so it’s hard for me to look away from the band’s brand new album, Problems 24/7, which just went up via Eggy Records. I think you’ll dig it; I do. Sort of sounds like Albert Hammond Jr.

Get A Little Heavy With Heaters

unnamed (2)Heaters is a Michigan based band I’ve written about a few times in the past right here on ATH. Though I’m one to certainly get a little inundated with all the psych rock music currently clouding the genre, I feel like Heaters bring a little something different to the table. The band is a bit heavier, give us some true quality guitar playing, and seem tighter than almost any other band of the genre. Try out their new single “Centennial” and let me know what you think.

Heaters will release their sophomore album Baptistina on August 5th via Beyond Beyond is Beyond Records.

New One From Speedy Ortiz

DSC_3974Speedy Ortiz sent out this rocking new track “Death Note” this morning and I felt the need for more of you to hear it on ATH. Now some of you may remember us not being huge fans of the live show during SXSW last year, but the more I think about it, the more I think the band may have suffered from poor sound and set up at pop up show locations. So I’m giving the band another shot, which is easy when they keep putting out songs like this. Rock on.

A new EP entitled Foiled Again will be out on June 3rd via Car Park Records.
