ultimate paintingIt’s a busy week for Austin, with tons of bands and people about to fill the city for ACL, but that being said, I really don’t want you to miss out on seeing Ultimate Painting tonight. They’ve released two incredible albums, both flying under the radar despite receiving great amounts of praise. I, for one, can also vouch for the fact that they’ve got an incredible live show ready for you; it’s one of the most rehearsed, tightest sets I’ve seen from an act in several years. Plus, you’ll get to see The Zoltars open up the night; they’re easily one of my Top Ten Austin acts playing around the city right now. Dryspell will also share the opening slot, so please come early to watch yourself some locals. Tickets are 10 bucks and doors open at 9 PM.

Energetic Rocker from Midnight Reruns

midnightrerunsI want to kick off Monday right for you, and I couldn’t think of a better way to pull it off than with this new single from Midnight Reruns. It probably shouldn’t hurt the band that Tommy Stinson helped record/produce the record, but while that Replacements energy might lay in the way the band plays, their sound has a something else in it that’s got me hooked. I can’t tell if I want to call it an old-school emo feel or just a casual indie rock tune, but regardless, it’s hook-laden, shifting directions multiple times. Their new LP, Force of Nature, is due out on Dusty Medical Records on October 23rd.

PYAITK time. You ever hear a song and latch on to it, only to find out that it was by a band you would have NEVER thought would put this song out as a single? Here is one such song from a band I decided I wouldn’t pay attention to. You see, the sophomore slump is a real thing. Most bands have their whole lives writing the first album only to be out of experiences or worse, writing a hot mess on the road. After their intarwebs buzzband status from “Keep You” blowed them up, it would seem Wild Belle figured they would just go on attack with an in your face break up song as a lead single. “Giving Up On You” is raucous thing with a great bassline, ringing guitar chords, the horns echoed for a proper Ska solo. Color me surprised.

Jam Through Friday With Surfy Psych From Young Rival

yrSometimes bands blend genre in all the right ways, and today’s exemplifier of that nuanced skill is Young Rival, out of Hamilton, Canada. They’ve got this fresh new single called “Scruples,” which is below and is a brief jam of distorted and fuzz coated surf-esque guitars. This song is simply groovy; those guitars are twangy and tart and the perfect balance of tight knit and loose, while the vocals are a bit of a wild card, distortedly playing through different levels of croon and conversation. Though only two and a half minutes long, I’ve found myself playing this one over and over again. Get hooked and get ready for the newest full-length release from these gentlemen called Interior Light. You can preorder this sick looking pink and blue record, which is out on October 16th via Paper Bag Records, here.

Another Dreamy Gem From Hazel English

If so, I’ve got just the right track for you from Hazel English. “Fix” is the second overwhelmingly lush single in a row from Oakland based Hazel English, and it’s sure to make your Friday. The guitars swim around gracefully in the mix, greeting you the moment you press play on the song and mellowly jam with you the whole way through. Meanwhile, those impossibly sugary vocals are omnipresent, between the oohs and hooky chorus that chimes in with “Take me away again” you can’t hide from the sweetness of the dreamy pop. If you like this track, be sure to check out Hazel English‘s EP Never Going Home, which will be released sometime this fall and has got that summer-turned fall vibe.

DestroyerWednesday night was a packed evening, with tons going on in Austin. But, I know I’ll see Thee Oh Sees at least four more times this year, minimum, so I went with my heart and something a little more rare, Destroyer. Not only that, but we got an extra special treat, as flight delays for Jennifer Castle meant we were treated to an Austin great, Thor Harris & Friends. Did You Ever Hear Nectarine No. 9?

sainjackIt was a shame growing up without music on the Internet; I feel like I missed out on so many great things, only to discover them later on in life. This was much the case with Nectarine No. 9, who I only discovered a few years ago while following a UK forum on 90s tunes. Luckily for those like me, Heavenly Recordings is reissuing the band’s great LP, Saint Jack. Probably the strangest thing is seeing how much I would have loved this, knowing that I stuck pretty close to a lot of the Brit-pop acts of the mid-90s. I’m glad I came across a few of these songs a bit ago, and now you can discover them for yourself…unless of course you had already found them.

Soliti Music Signs Puuunhalaaja

puunIt’s Friday and it’s been a really slow week in the music world, which is perfect because I’ve had to get back and hunt to find some gems. Luckily, I didn’t have to search for this great track from Puunhalaaja; it was sent to me by our friends at Soliti Music. I think the hardest thing for American audiences will be that the music is sung in an entirely different language, which is the ONLY detractor. Musically, it’s a great piece of songwriting. The guitar has this intimate quality, and the vocals are really pleasant; I don’t even want to mention the nice symphonic touches that make me melt. This self-titled album will be released by Soliti on November 20th.

Hear the New Night Flowers B-Side

nightflowersI really enjoyed the A-Side from Night Flowers, so it seems fitting that I would enjoy the B-Side, amirite? This track is a pretty polished pop number, peaking near the levels where we found Pains of Being Pure at Heart on their last album. The edges of shoegaze are removed to reveal crisp riffs and airy vocals that all pop fans will find touching. Feel like it’s got this wistful attitude that should take you perfectly into your weekend endeavors, whatever they may be; it’s all about that spirit. ACL Artist Spotlight: Kurt Vile and The Violators

We’re about a week away from the first weekend of ACL, and that means that you should be getting your schedules hammered down. While it may seem still a ways off in your mind, Sunday of the first weekend looks like it’s shaping up to be one of the strongest days lineup-wise and so it’s important to get properly excited. One of these acts come late in the day towards the end of the weekend, but his set is bound to be one of the best of the weekend.
