The Nites Are Free!!!

FFFNITESKeeping with tradition, Fun Fun Fun Fest wouldn’t have three funs without the added performances available to fest goers as part of the FFF Nites. This year’s selection of after party partying is brought to you by Hyundai and the Grammy Amplifier Program. Nathan loves his Hyundai.

Check it out, here are some blurbs from the PR stuff cause I don’t feel like retyping:

“The NITES shows will occur in various venues in downtown and east Austin including The Mohawk, Sidewinder, The Parish, Beerland, 611 Red River, Cheer Up Charlie’s, Empire Control Room, ACL Live, The New Movement Theater, Elysium, The North Door, Vulcan Gas Company, Kingdom, and The White Horse. A full NITES schedule will be announced on funfunfunfest.com closer to the event.”

“Now in its tenth year, Fun Fun Fun Fest has curated an impressive NITES lineup boasting both after show-only acts and festival performers including a full set from GZA, performances from Future Islands, Andrew W.K. (solo), Lagwagon, Mayhem, Skinny Puppy, Subhumans, Tig Notaro, Le Sins (Toro Y Moi DJ set), and more. NITES will also include performances from Hyundai GRAMMY Amplifier artists Cramer, Bonavox, and Barnaby Saints.”

Pretty exciting stuff…

My New Discovery: The Tuts

tutsI’m always following my favorite artists and labels to try and discover new bands that won’t end up on every other web site…I like you guys to get a little differentiation. With that in mind, that’s why I’m bringing this UK outfit, The Tuts. Below you’ll find their latest single, and I hope you’ll give it a stream or two. It reminds me a lot of female-fronted college rock from the late 90s, but it definitely has the playfulness that accompanies modern acts like Childbirth. In the end, the songs from this group are great, so I encourage you to discover my discovery, fall in love then thank me later.

A Little Haunt from Wickerbird

wickerI don’t know, it feels like I should be posting high energy tunes going into the weekend, but I just can’t escape this track from Wickerbird. Like the post title, it’s been haunting me, using its understated folk constructions to craft this beautiful piece. You can be drawn into the lofty vocal approach, or find yourself sucked into the song’s dense sound…though admittedly, sometimes it amounts to very little, observing the negative space left for the listener. If you’re enjoying what you hear, then you should go grab a copy of The Leaf Maker, the band’s new album that just came out last week.

Another New Track from The Mantles

themantlesWarning! I’m fawning here. There’s been two records I’ve been sent a few weeks early that I’ve played non-stop. All Odds End, the new effort from the Mantles, is one of those two (the other is the new Expert Alterations). It’s one of those albums that goes beyond all the influences you could hear early on in the band’s career (though I loved that too). All the promise and all the dreams are more than exceeded; it doesn’t hurt that these are also some of the most infectious tunes out there. Just listen to the bounce that goes through this track…if you’re not tapping those toes then you’re not living. Look for their new record on October 16th via Slumberland Records.

Show Pics: 3 x 3 Series @ The Mohawk (9/21)

3x3 with Templo X 41We love live music. We love Austin artists. We want to help you love them, too. We need your help to keep bringing you the best jams for cheap. Go to our shows, buy our records. /rant

The 3 x 3 series is a brilliant idea. Let’s make it easy for venues to be open when we know it is a smaller show and get new bands exposure. We had another brilliant lineup for last Monday’s show. We got to check out the first live set for Mean Jolene, ever. We got to see Caitlin from Ultraviolet dedicate a song to her parents. We got to see Templo X for the last time in a while before Paul headed back up to Philly. I got to take pictures. It was a great night of talking with the musicians, busting balls about 90’s Emo bands and a ton of great new songs.

Do I Like This New Girls Names Single?

girlsnamesHmm. Do I like this? Well, I do like it, but I also have to see it as a completely different version than the Girls Names I originally came to love. Honestly, it seems like an entirely new band, though we’ve had hints with recent singles and 10″ coming from the band. What was once atmospheric and brooding now takes on the full focus, thrusting the band into a darkened world of filled negative space and slowly unraveling rapture. It sort of reminds me of what’s become of Iceage…though it seems like they’re getting a lot more out of their approach. Their new effort, Arms Around a Vision will be out on October 2nd. My final thoughts…yes, I like it.

Rad Sloppy Rocker from Never Young

neveryoungThe last time we heard from Never Young, we were blasting their self-titled EP, and it looks like they’re going to be rocking just as hard now that they’ve announced the limited cassette, NY Singles. I suppose it’s a shitty adjective to use, but from the get-go, this band seems like they’re barely containing themselves, barely holding it together. But, that being said, in this single they do hold it together, they do pull it all in and leave you wanting to hear more. It’s just one of three unreleased songs on this new effort, which comes at you on October 16th via Father Daughter Records.

New Single From Mainland

11999014_927828163958582_2108589009077429236_nIt’s been quite some time since I’ve heard anything from NYC based group Mainland so I’ve been excited today to hear new music from the guys.  The new single is called “Not As Cool” and is a welcome reminder to why we originally enjoyed the band a few years ago.  This is a pop rock number at its core similar to a band like Wavves with a hint of a band like our amigos Young Girls.  It’s legit.

Show Preview: Destroyer @ Mohawk (Tonight)

D700 Destroyer 156

Date TONIGHT
Location Mohawk
Doors 6:30 PM
Tickets $20 from TE

Perhaps the greatest thing to come out of the New Pornographers explosion (in my opinion) is the mass discovery of Dan Bejar. Now, I don’t want to take away from the rest of the group, but Dan, under his Destroyer moniker, has by and far exceeded my expectations. Everything he releases is ultimately interesting, and this year’s Posion Season is a must have in any modern indie record collection. And live, he’s something else. He’s one of those characters you can’t peel your eyes away from, leaving you emotionally invested in every musical note. Jennifer Castle will open the show early, so show up to support the support.
