Fresh Alex G Track

beachmusicAlex G has had a pretty quick little rise to fame in the last year or so.  His star looks to continue its ascension now that he’s made the move to Domino Record Co for his forthcoming effort, Beach Music.  I really like the sound of this first single, “Bug,” which seems to hit all the wrong notes, except for some odd Chipmunks nods at the end of the track.  Still, it’s clear that he knows exactly what he’s doing, musically, and I think it will remain hard for many to look away from him and his work.  Check out the new LP on October 9.

Dig the Vibe on This Young Rival Tune

youngrivalOne of my favorite acts from the Canadia is Rural Alberta Advantage, but it looks like the band has someone gunning for their spot in my heart, namely Young Rival. Interestingly, they have some vocal lineage, with a similar drawl in the presentation of voice, though there’s this little touch in the chorus where I also hear an homage to Kevin Barnes.  This track’s got energy, a little bit of a stomp to it, thus you’ll find yourself pressing play time and time again. It’s the title track from their new effort, Interior Light, which comes out on October 16th via Paper Bag Records.

ATX Show Spotlight: Austin Bands Play Siamese Dream @ Holy Mountain – TONIGHT

It’s Thursday, and you’re winding down your week.  I think it’s probably best that you go spend it over at Holy Mountain watching some great musicians play Smashing Pumpkins‘ Siamese Dream from front to back.  It’s a cool idea, and even cooler since the acts playing will be made up of members of Que Pasa, She Sir, Major x 3, Alex Napping, Lunar Gold, Letting Up Despite Great Faults, Ringo Deathstarr and more. And, as if one of our favorite venues wasn’t going to be filled with some of our favorite people wasn’t enough for you, it’s absolutely FREE.  You have no excuse.

Bright Pop From Table People

10945491_785662944822372_8709127713345475891_nTable People is a band from Seoul who make some very enticing and interesting pop music.  This tune below, “Ride With Me”, is a prime example of the brand of simple, yet still bright and fun type of sound the band creates.  Sort of like a Tokyo Police Club meets Los Campesinos! sound if you will…. I dig.

If you’re into it, you can buy their new album Ride With Me on bandcamp right now.

New Amy Bezunartea Tune

Amy Bezunartea

Amy Bezunartea

Brian and I had the pleasure of catching Amy Bezunartea at her opening spot for Stephin Merritt earlier this year. It was here that I first heard the song that she’s now sharing as the latest single for her brand new album, New Villain. This new tune deals with the struggles a woman/girl must face in the world, especially when it comes to expectations placed upon them by the world. I really appreciate the word play too in her songwriting.  I’m definitely looking forward to her new release, which is slated for September 25th release via Kiam Records.

Another Gem From Sego

segoPop.

I have been on a quest recently for a proper summer jam that jumps out in the lead of this year’s crop of summer jams; lots of good offers, but missing a real hooked up ditty. I’m not sure this song is THE summer jam, but it is damn good and Sego went from a Soundcloud find to an ATH favorite over the last six months. The last track shared was Rapture-esque burner, this is a friendly pop dance song that begs for a cocktail with an umbrella in it and some floaties.

They’ll be at The Mohawk on 9/12 opening for El Ten Eleven. Let’s fool around.

ATH Premiere: Knowlton Bourne Signs w/ Misra

Knowlton Promo 1Knowlton Bourne is a 23 year old native of Mississippi, which is important, as there’s definitely been some recent indie rock lineage occurring out there…like Dent May for instance.  But, with Bourne, you’re going to get more of a fuzzed-out riff blended carefully with a taste of Southern comforts. Guitar chords sound like something Ty Segall would have constructed, but the structure is slower, much like the pace of the South, which is why the tune succeeds on its own terms. This number will feature on Knowlton’s Songs from Motel 43, which is going to be released on October 2nd via Misra…enjoy your first sample of the LP.

Indiepop Magic from Red Sleeping Beauty

alwaysWhat!? 15 years later and Red Sleeping Beauty come back to the indiepop scene with one of my favorite tracks of the summer?! As soon as I pressed play on this track, I knew I was in love. It’s got a pretty simple synth line opening the track, pushing the song forward as the vocals make their way into your ears.  Niklas has the perfect voice too to make the song reach those maximum heights of pop melody.  I’m sorry but this song is just fucking brilliant; I’m probably going to play it all day long. Look for this track to appear on a new 7″ for Shelflife on September 11th.

Are You As Excited As You Should Be For The New Destroyer Album?

destroyer_band_print_41No? You’re not? What the fuck is wrong with you? I guess you haven’t heard “Dream Lover,” but it’s alright, because I’ve got you covered with another single from Destroyer’s Poison Season, which is coming out soon on August 28th via Merge Records. “Times Square,” gives you classic Dan Bejar– swirling lyrics and storytelling around his blend of orchestral rock. His signature drunken poet delivery is there and prominent and the word on the street is that this new album is going to be killer. Take a listen and get properly excited. Preorder it here.

“Elephant In The Room”

Fresh off getting dropped from Def Jam Records, GOOD Music artist CyHi the Prynce did not mince words with his latest release. CyHi has been signed to GOOD Music for five years and the label has not released any of his music. In that same time span CyHi has released seven mixtapes and countless music videos, all using his own money. Feeling passed over and ignored, CyHi finally let the world know how he feels by way of a diss song primarily aimed at GOOD Music’s head Kanye West. This is raw emotion at its best. The Cage the Elephant sample works so well here.
