Elvis DepressedlyCatching up on some pics I was gun shy to post given our instability last week (let me know if any of you see things loading weird or slowly).

Elvis Depressedly‘s solidly lo-fi delivery of well-crafted indie-pop songs charmed the ATH team. I missed them during SxSW, but The Mohawk and Transimssion remedied that for me with an indoor show. The show ended up selling out due to a highly popular double-headlining tour with Mitski and a great opener in Eskimeaux. I felt older than usual, lots of Xs on hands.

Chill Psychedelic Track From Animal Eyes

animal eyesSometimes you just need a spunky little twist in your listening catalogue to spice things up. Lucky for you, Portland’s Animal Eyes have a new song called, “Mushroom Hunter” from their upcoming LP called Where We Go that is perfect for this purpose. The track builds on the quirky psychedelic aspects, layering in more and more subtle sounds to the climactic finish. What starts as just a gentle psych guitar riff soon spirals off in different ways to make the track great. Take a listen and look out for that new record coming this fall.

Get Your Day Going with Sego

segoThere was a  time in the early 00s when the indie sphere was filled with the energetic dance punk scene, breaking bands like LCD Soundsystem, the Rapture and even Electric Six.  Some of those bands lasted, some ended, but this new track from Sego sounds like a throwback to that throwback. I can see how the vocal set up reminds some folks of LCD, but I think the rhythm work, like the percussion and the bass grooves has more of a leaning towards the impact of the Rapture (which was always my favorite of that era). They’ve just signed on with Dine Alone Records to release their Long Long Way from the Fringe EP in September. Enjoy this jam.

Song Premiere: The Airplanes

Where You ARe NowATH has long been a supporter of Josh Vest and his bedroom project known as The Airplanes.  Over the years we have been treated to some truly incredible and all around delightful pop tunes.  Today I’m pleased to premier this new single called “Where You Are Now”.  Once again we are treated to some bright, sunny, and easy to get into pop music from a guy living in remote Arkansas who we all need to start paying attention too.  Josh also tells me that he might be touring soon so we have even more to look forward to.

Fresh Work from The Ocean Party

11018724_10153007025987263_1810945132717656803_oWhat a week! Two of my favorite Australian acts have released new music, meaning new records are on the way! First, there was last week’s hit from The Crayon Fields, and now we’ve got the steady guitar pop of The Ocean Party.  I always appreciated the band’s approach to songwriting; it always seemed so  relaxed and effortless. But, this latest single shows some growth, especially during the chorus where the piano explodes and the vocals take on a loftier note.  There’s no word exactly on a release date, but it looks as if the group will have more enjoyable tunes underway that we’ll all soon enjoy.

Pleased To Meet You: Great Father

bbBeen looking for something a little bit along the vein of Americana lately, something with a story to tell. This tune I stumbled across from Cleveland’s Great Father is perfect, not to mention a pretty great song in and of itself.  There’s this lush blend of guitar sounds, both strummed and sliding, mixed around the soft-spoken voice of singer Brandon Stevens; I hear a little bit of Tweedy in his delivery.  They’ll be releasing their album Bicentennial Blue via Exit Stencil Recordings in September, but I wanted you to get acquainted with them now should you need the perfect tune to enjoy on your summer road trip.

Show Preview: Dick Diver @ Mohawk (Tonight!)

dickdiverAre you a fan of great guitar pop? Fan of the ringing guitars coming from Australia? I know you are, which is all the reason you need to go to Mohawk tonight and check out Australia’s Dick Diver.  They’ve long been part of our favorite Aussie label, Chapter Music, and recently caught on with Trouble in Mind Records here in the States…so if you’re one of those folks that assigns worth to labels, then you can’t get better than that.  They’ll be touring behind the release of Melbourne, Florida, which is filled with excellent pop songs throughout, illustrating a huge step up in sound from Calendar Days. Also, they’ll be joined by Austin’s Jonly Bonly, who we’ve fawned over enough on these here pages.

ATX Spotlight: Decider Prep EP

deciderFor all the nonsense about Austin music dying out here, our little town still has this ability to birth some really creative work, such as the new signing for Monofonus Press, Decider. The single we’ve been offered by the label has this stuttering post-punk that comes with some little interludes of careful guitar precision (reminds me of the first Liars LP).  Eventually, the song opens up for this blasting wall of noise that closes the track with an impending notion of of noisy doom. You can grab the band’s Sad Jose EP from the label this week on cassette; pick it up HERE.

Have A Nice Weekend

TelepatheSo real life got in the way of me getting this post done for Friday. It was a busy and frustrating day in the home office. Yech. But hard work is its own reward, right?

So we all here stories about the records that take forever to make the light of day, recently a local band had such a record get released. Tiger Waves has a recording from 2012 finally make its way to the intarwebs and onto the presses. For this post, I bring you the “latest” from Telepathe. Also recorded in 2012, Busy Gangnes and Melissa Livaudais’s record Destroyer will finally be available on August 7th on their own label BZML. Here is what we have deprived from hearing. This is a monumentally good track IMHO that first appeared online a year ago. Sorry for missing it, but if anything, it proves good songs don’t show their age.

Festival Preview: Eaux Claires

Screen Shot 2015-07-02 at 10.00.28 PMSometimes the ATH crew ventures beyond the Live Music Capital and gets to experience rad festivals. Last summer, I had the pleasure of traveling to Barcelona for Primavera Sound, and while Spain may not be on the horizon for me this summer, Wisconsin is. In a few short weeks, we’ll be hitting the grounds of the first ever Eaux Claires festival, the love child project of Justin Vernon (Bon Iver/Volcano Choir) and Aaron Dessner (The National). While we’ll give you updates live from the festival so you can live vicariously through us and figure out which acts you need to see when they make their way through our neck of the woods, you can read on for the top five things we’re looking forward to about the inaugural festival.
