Trinidad Jame$ Is No One Trick Pony

no-one-is-safeWhen Trinidad Jame$ first hit the scene in late 2012 with “All Gold Everything” many people in the hip-hop community labeled him a one-trick pony most likely destined to disappear as quickly as he appeared. Two and a half years and four mixtapes later he’s still around, displaying a surprising amount of depth and creativity in his music. His most recent mixtape No One Is Safe dropped January 20th. Some of the highlights include “H.O.M.E.“, a letter from Trinidad Jame$ to himself about music industry struggles, and “T Jame$ Expre$$“, a vulgar and predictable dance song over a hypnotic bass line. The mixtape can be streamed via Trinidad Jame$’s Soundcloud page or it can be downloaded for free from DatPiff.

Robert Pollard Never Quits

bobbyJust because GVB might be on permanent hiatus doesn’t mean Robert Pollard is going to quit writing songs at a ridiculous pace.  His new project, Ricked Wicky, has just released their latest single and it’s quite a stunner.  I love the pace of the track, allowing the guitars to perfectly accent Pollards distinct vocals.  I don’t know why, but I feel like this is one of the better tracks Pollard has written; I’m pretty sure I’ve already played it a dozen times today alone. Look for the new album, I Sell the Circus to come out this week via GVB Inc Records.

Digging This Pop from Solvey

zamboniJessica Zambri has had her hands on a lot of great things in the last year, most notably the latest release from Hooray for Earth.  She’s working on her own project, Solvey, and this song is stuck in my head; I can’t get it out. There’s always something about well-organized pop songs aided by huge string arrangements that really gets under my skin.  During the chorus there are huge symphonic stabs and Zambri’s voice hits all the perfect notes; these are my favorite moments of the song.  This is her first release under the name, which should see a release on new label, Killer Wail Records at some point during this year.

A Night Out: Citadel, Deep Cuts, Shivery Shakes (1/29)

A Night Out Citadel Deep Shakes 43I love the fact that we can just head out any night in this town and find not one good local show, but several. had a new lens to play around with so it seemed the perfect excuse to head out. Out I went last Thursday night and I got to check out Citadel‘s second show ever, Deep Cuts in town from Houston and our ATH faves Shivery Shakes.

I will take you through the night with a few notes and plenty of pics right after the break…

Another Great Track from Pinecones

pineyNicole picked up on the boys from Pinecones late last year, and I’m jumping on that bandwagon this week. The Athens/Atlanta based group definitely have some similarities to some other proto-punk bands of the moment, though they seem to have a bit more ferocity behind their personal brand.  This song in particular constantly feels like it’s a runaway train, almost falling off the tracks, only to come to a nice little resting respite before blasting off towards the end.  Look for their debut LP on Arrowhawk Records this April.

ATX Show Spotlight: Two For Tuesday (Dead Space + Zola Jesus)

zolaCatchy name game, am I right? There are two really incredible shows on Tuesday night, and frankly, they’re on completely opposite ends of the spectrum.  That being said, I suggest you follow in our footsteps and hit up both. Those looking to indulge their pop sweet tooth need to hit up Zola Jesus and Deradoordian at Mohawk.  ZJ is coming into town rocking her new album TAIGA; I’m hoping she touches a lot on her last LP, Conatus quite a bit.  You can get tickets for $16 HERE; doors are at 6:30 PM.

But, on the other end of the spectrum is the phenomenal line-up at Hotel Vegas.  The Dead Space are the spotlight, and they’re record Faker might just be one of the best records to come out of ATX in some time. Still, you can catch other heavy hitters Ghetto Ghouls and Beth Israel if you’re up to it.  I think you’re best served by hitting up both shows. Doors at Vegas open at 9 PM.

Surf City Lay Down New Tunes

surf-cityAdmittedly, this Surf City tune slipped right by me. But, considering I’ve loved the band for quite some time, I had to make sure you guys heard this new tune.  This track shows the growth the band has made since we had them play our SXSW show a few years; they used to be coated in noisy distortion, but they’ve settled into a brand of pop that offers more accessibility whilst still holding true to their style.  You’ll hear this track on the band’s new album, Jekyll Island, which is being released later this year by Fire Records.

Fun Single from Clip Art

clipsI always like to kick Monday’s off with something spirited and slightly on the pop edge, so I figured you’d be best suited if you jammed this new tune from Clip Art.  The band has a really lofty vocal presence, somewhere between the early days of Vampire Weekend and Saint Motel, so those hooks are there.  There’s a steady groove to open up the track, but when they get to the chorus they really unleash the power, boosting the song further into fun spectrum.  This track will be featured on their delightful new album, Culler, which sees a release on March 31st.

Bummer City? More Like Bummer Vacation

bummavacay

Bummer Vacation, besides having a pretty rad name, are a self-proclaimed shoe-gaze punk wave band from Fort Worth. They put out their debut album last summer, but now they’re back with this single, “Silver Hands.” What I really appreciate about this track are the little details that this band has incorporated; they’ve got a traditional punk-wave sound with twangy guitars and plenty of reverb on the vocals, but these guitar licks are super sharp and the percussion feels light and airy. There’s no such thing as too much shoe-gaze music. Enjoy.

Austin Spotlight: Jam the New Sleep Good Album

sleepytimeAs we reported last year, Sleep Good has been hard at work on his new effort, and it’s finally going to see the light of day.  It’s predominantly electronically infused ambient music, but don’t let that lead you in the wrong direction.  Just imagine Black Moth Super Rainbow early on, yet slowed down with subtle touches of accessibility for every listener.  Dream Dealer is the perfect listen to put on while you do work around the house or party in your friends backyard.  There’s so many delicate moments that will draw you in that you won’t want to skip towards the next song.  Here’s to your Friday and drifting through your day.
