Get Your Folk On With Canet

canet

While that heading may be a little misleading, as Brooklyn’s Canet make more alternative rock music than straight up folk, but you can definitely still hear some folk inspiration in the song I have for you below. Canet is the project of Agusti Canet and Daniel Tortoledo, who met back in 2011 and have been collaborating ever since. “I Want To See You,” is a track off their brand spanking new EP, Sounds From The Sea, which is available here for free on their Bandcamp Page. This song is a little meek, but the interesting vocals and the wonderful little break down at the end make it worth your while. Have a listen.

Puppy Gives You A Little Metal

puppy_forever_art_541_402Puppy are a trio from London that make grunge/metal(ish) tunes. That’s pretty much all that is known about them thusfar, so I’m going to let the song do the talking. What I really like about this track is that the guitars are screaming heavy metal while the vocals are light and airy; something you’d expect from dream/twee pop, creating a balance that’s hard not to enjoy. “Forever” blends genre in a seamless fashion, and makes me look forward to what they have in store for the future. Forget the weird name and press play: rock on Puppy.

These are just a few of my suggestions, so if you’re not feeling what I’m into, feel free to look up your own gig to attend.  Also…it’s clear Leon Bridges is blowing up.  Read more

Fall In Love With TV Sets

tv sets

Toronto band, TV Sets is pretty well under the radar as of now, but I’m a firm believer that that is about to change, as their lo-fi bedroom rock is full of hooks and allure. When I stumbled upon the track I have for you below, “So Fortunate,” I was immediately drawn in by the stripped production, jangly guitars, and far off vocals that this band has got going for them. This band put out their first EP last year, but they’ve got another one for you to listen to for free called Gen Pop, which includes this track as well as some other catchy numbers. Have a listen and get behind these up and comers.

Jimmy Whispers is Intriguing

jimmyI’ve taken lately to listening to music that’s been highly distorted and a little bit odd, so it makes sense to me that Jimmy Whispers has caught my attention after releasing his newest single.  The song’s little more than vocals atop some samples that were born to sound like a carefully written pop song.  There’s something a bit off in the vocals, and that’s the endearing aspect to my ears.  Seeing as this is the title track to the album, Summer in Pain, I have a feeling that this might not be the most light-hearted effort; I’m totally okay with that too.  Look for it on March 24th via Moniker.

Grave Pool Spins Nashville Into Dream Pop

graveryTypically, at least at the moment, when you think of indie music and Nashville, you tend to go more towards bands combining country, blues and rock n’ roll…or just a whole bunch of guitars.  But, in the case of Grave Pool, the offering is a much dreamier world, perhaps one where the night is backlit by stars and the glow of the moon.  It’s a pretty layered song, considering that it’s primarily the work of one man, utilizing a wash of keyboards atop drums atop warm vocals and a stepping bass line.  Look for his new record, Mnemonics, to come out this Spring via 80s Ladies Records.

This Is a Pretty Sweet American Wrestlers Tune

kellyIt took me a few days to really sink my teeth into this American Wrestlers single, but I’m really glad that I gave it the appropriate time…what a great song.  It’s got the little bits of pop that make me swoon, from the sound of the vocals to the track’s volume burst that kicks in just after the 1 minute mark.  It’s the brand of pop songwriting that has me tapping my toes and bobbing my head.  It’s another impressive dose of craftsmanship presented to us by the Scot (now Missourian) songwriter. Look for his self-titled debut album to come out via Fat Possum on April 7th.

Some Pop from Life in Film

artworks-000104111406-lwiw6y-t500x500Many moons ago we shared a single from up and coming UK band Life in Film and it looks like the boys have been rising in fame over the last couple of years.  After giving a listen to their latest single “Get Closer”, one can easily see what the hype is all about.  The song is so damn catchy and infused with pop that I find myself hitting play over and over again every time it finishes.  Simple, yet fun as hell.  Can’t get much better than that.

Life in Film have their debut full length album entitled Here it Comes due out sometime this spring on +1 Records.

More New Music from Santiparro

santiGOLDJust last week I encountered the music of Santiparro.  I was struck by the fragile quality of the vocals, placed gently atop these great little folk-influenced ballads.  On his latest single, that’s the case once again, though I turned my speakers up to the max so I could hear the tiny little details that lurk in the background of this song.  Clearly he’s made a name for himself already, as this song features that Kyp Malone chap from TVotR, so people are taking notice of his work, and I hope you’re one of those as well.  Look for his new album, True Prayer, to come out on February 24th via Gnome Life Records.
