Cymbals Eat Guitars – LOSE

59573e8eRating: ★★★☆☆

There’s a lot to be said about a band’s third record; gone are the first impressions that come with a debut and the jitters that a sophomore release present. With a buffer record under their belt, Cymbals Eat Guitars, currently a four piece from New York, can go wherever they want, and LOSE feels, mostly like a manifestation of this freedom as well as growth. This third album is mature and varied in ways that Lenses Alien was lacking.

“Jackson,” begins as the open that you would expect from the group, but quickly grows into a slightly reformed version of the group. You get the same quiet, growing introduction, but just when you expect them to burst into the song with all guns a-blazin–’ and they do burst in quickly—they jump with more control. The electric guitar squalls in the background, but the percussion aligns with the subtle “oohs” that glide in smoothly. It’s as if the band has entered off the high dive with a precision, effortless trick, instead of just a cannonball. “Jackson” undoubtedly brings the rock too, it comes through with D’Agostino’s vocals that cut through the instrumentation with his occasional guttural screech as well as the back and forth between quiet and peeling out. This track doubled down with “Warning,” that has D’Agostino reeling off lyrics line after line with a quick tongue and a bitter heart, saying things like “friendship’s the biggest myth” and “the shape of true love is terrifying enough.” If these lines don’t scream unhappy endings, I’m not sure what does.

While LOSE shows a lot of growth, some of the tracks fall mediocre and fail to hold on to my interest as they go through. “XR” begins with promise and a little bit of harmonica, but then spins around itself a few times and ultimately goes no where—this isn’t to say that every track has to build to a climactic ending, but the sound is grating at the end of the 2:35 time, and feels like a step back from the first two songs. This is to be a pattern: you get a few solid songs that pique your interest and show progress, and then a little step back.

When you reach the end of LOSE, you will feel an immediate desire to return to some really great tracks, such as “Chambers.” This is the best song from the album and maybe one of the best that Cymbals Eat Guitars have put out, but there isn’t the cohesive qualities of a spectacular-knock-you-off-your-feet album here; it’s good, just not great.

Slow Trip with Foxygen

foxyginI love to love and hate Foxygen.  Their first LP was remarkable, so remarkable that when they brought their live debacle of a show to Austin that I had to force myself to walk out (not just go to the bar; I straight up walked out). All that nonsense aside, I’m still quite fascinated with their musicianship.  Just listen to this song; it opens with a carnival-esque freak show before folding into this really simple piece of melodic neo-folk.  There’s two different vocalists, which shouldn’t surprise since the group is taking 9 people on the road as their band (please rehearse!).  Even if ‘I heard they suck live,’ they’re music is still captivating…look for more of it on October 14th when …and Star Power is released by Jagjaguwar.

Suicide Squeeze to Issue Dasher 7″

dashFrom the moment this song kicks off, there’s something dangerous about this song from Dasher.  You can just hear the volume turned up to deafening levels in the live setting, with the vocals screamed in your face the entire set.  Your ears are going to take a pummeling, but that’s precisely why I feel like sharing it.  There’s an inherent violence in the tune, and in that approach there’s also a disregard for personal safety.  I’m hooked on it, so why not give it some space here. The Soviet 7″ will be released by Suicide Squeeze on October 14th…music to my ears.

Say Hello to Neil Jarvis

artworks-000088654717-klelia-t500x500I’ll admit that prior to today I knew almost nothing about Manchester based artist Neil Jarvis.  Though I still know very little about the guy, I do know that his music is worthy of a few spins and moments of your time.  Check out his latest single called “Good Years” below to see what I’m fussing about.  The track is certainly in the shoe gaze genre with a nice breeze and flow to the washed out guitars and almost beach like vibe.  If you’re into it, Jarvis just release a new LP entitled Halloween Summer on UK based On the Grind Records.  Pick that up here.

Another Rocker from GRMLN

gremlinsGRMLN continue to grace these pages with their impressive tunes. They jump right in with distorted guitars and a rolling drum beat, pushing forth with speed into a power-pop realm, punked up.  If the whole new album sounds like this, it’s likely to gain lots of tractions.  The songs we’ve been presented, along with this one, have a catchy sensation, though the guitars help those who are looking to keep it real on their toes.  This isn’t your emo brother’s GRMLN; they’re hear to rock a little bit harder. Look for Soon Away on September 16th  via the folks over at Carpark Records.

Another Track from Purling Hiss

pearlsPress. Play. Screech. Off into the wandering guitar solo that opens the song, met by another progression underneath it that slowly unwraps the song’s melody.  Enter vocals.  They’re laying somewhere in between the realms of T. Moore and J. Mascis, though that’s owed more to their delivery; they do have their own little touch that’s noticeable before the song’s return to instrumentation.  Listening back to a song like this, I wonder why there’s not a larger buzz for Purling Hiss.  Their album Weirdon will be released on September 23rd, and I’ll be one of those picking it up that very day.

Austin Spotlight: Brand New Grape St. Track!!!

10606255_811918515519334_6116597443649835805_nAs you know, we’ve long been supporters of Grape St., the band fronted by Curtis O’Mara of Harlem.  We love them so much we put out their first LP, A Date With You.  But, like all good things, they must come to an end, which is why the band is moving up to release their next LP with the folks over at Burger Records.  If you’ve watched the band live, you’ve probably heard “Wallpaper;” it’s been a huge staple in their live sets.  They’re going to be taking that live set to the West Coast in a few weeks, bringing with them a tour only cassette with the below tune; it’ll also be featured on their next LP, which is slated for a release later in the year.  Come on, this tune’s just so good. Jam it loud.

New Jam from WULFS

wolvesYou know that I like to check in with Art is Hard Records every few weeks, as their Pizza Club Singles always offer up something that not everyone’s hip to, so I know I won’t be being a dead horse when I post their tunes. This week’s jam comes courtesy of WULFS, who appear to be a younger act working with the label, but I’m stuck on this tune.  The guitars are dreamy and light, at least when they first enter.  They move forward, then the distortion kicks in; I think I even hear a bit of horn as they rock out during the chorus.  I bet you’ll have fun listening to this tune…you know, if you’re into good tunes.

Fresh Discovery: Scooterbabe

scooterI was doing a little research on this great little festival called Athens Intensified.  While looking it over, I came across this band, Scooterbabe on the festival’s line-up. They haven’t done anything new in awhile, but I’ve been stuck on their self-titled EP.  Part of it is this jangling bit of indiepop, which always has a spot in my heart.  But, I also hear a bit of the Promise Ring in the vocals, so of course my nostalgia flares up and gets me going all over again. They look like they’ve got tons of recent activity, so perhaps we’ll get to hear something brand new from the group soon. For now, I’m content with EP; you can pick it up for the NYOP now.

Smoky Track from She Keeps Bees

beeskneesI’ve written previously about my minor infatuation with She Keeps Bees, the duo currently residing in Brooklyn. They’re crafting this really minimal pop music, using light instrumental touches built to accentuate the vocals of Jessica Larrabee.  On their most recent single, “Radiance,” her performance has this classical smokiness to it; it feels like it belongs in another era entirely, yet somehow the music still comes off as relevant in the current landscape. Future Gods Records will be releasing the group’s album, Eight Houses, on September 16th, so stay tuned if you like what you’re hearing.
