New Tune from Paperfangs

It looks like our good friends over at Soliti Records will be starting off 2013 the right way by releasing Past Perfect by Paperfangs.  This is the first single from the band’s new album, said to be the process of creating an album with multiple layers and stories that will unfold differently, depending upon what the listener brings to the table.  For my two cents, I like the electronic pulse of the track, which seemingly adds more diversity to a steadily growing stable of incredible bands.  Seems like the perfect way to start off our Monday here at ATH.

Pleased to Meet You: The Chrysalids (UK)

One of my favorite things about the holiday break is that I get a chance to listen to the advice of various friends around the world who often advise me on hits galore.  For me, the Chrysalids have been on constant rotation, though the band hasn’t been together in quite some time.  2012 saw the group release a retrospective album titled Neither Love Nor Money via Pronoia Records.  This hits right at the heart of my adoration for jangling pop, coinciding with great harmonies and bits of indie pop.  Here’s the opener from that retrospective, so maybe you’ll feel inclined to go check out the band as well.

Catching Up With Starfucker

Seems they are going to mellow us out before the dance party.

Starfucker has been a persoanl favorite of mine for some time now and not just because of the catchy name. The jams, the dancy jams, they pwn all teh h4x0rs. But the latest tease of the new material is a smooth refrain from the previous two tracks.

They are playing The Mohawk just before SxSW. The full length Miracle Mile is due 2/19 on Polyvinyl.

Austin Free Week: Friday Night Highlights

Man, this next week and a half is shaping up to be a blast for everyone in Austin, and Friday is really starting to turn things up a notch.  I’ve already caught great sets by Endless Thoughts, Politics and Parquet Courts, so I’m really looking forward to the rest of what’s in-store. If you can’t make it out this weekend, don’t forget that Free Week now goes on into next week too! Here’s my suggestions for Friday.  Read more

New Track from Eat Skull

2013 has a lot of great things coming our way, and I wasn’t really expecting to be as blown away by this new Eat Skull track, which only adds to my list of lofty expectations for the new year.  At first, I sort of felt like I was immersed in a Wes Anderson moment, but then the song sort of began to fill with a bit more noise, so if it’s an Anderson homage, then perhaps this is one of those rare action scenes.  I love the distance between the vocals and the listener, creating a haunting, yet enchanting, bit of psychedelia.  Their album III comes out via Woodsist on February 19, and here’s your first taste.

Austin Free Week: Thursday Highlights

I hope you’re all taking full advantage of Austin’s Free Week, despite the chilling temperatures.  There’s tons of great bands left and right, not to mention DJs and dance parties.  It’s a special time of the year when the music community gives back, so we’ve got to be there to show our love, right? Here’s my list of things to hit up on Thursday, though it’s just one man’s ideas.  Read more

Austin Free Week: Wednesday Highlights

Man, after the New Year, it’s time to get things on the site rolling. We’re taking this week sort of slow, but mostly because we’re dedicated to getting out on the town to cover Austin’s Free Week. It’s like SXSW, with Austin bands!  Here’s my picks for Wednesday night, but please, if you’re an Austinite reading this blog…go support the scene and the musicians that make it all worthwhile. Thought I Would Share Some Wonky

This one popped on an intarweb’s radio station (The Bagel over at SomaFM.com). I dug it, so I thought I would share.

This may be a late entry into best band name of the year. Wonky is such a great word. This is perfect post punk.

So here you go, Wonky Doll and The Echo
