SXSW 2014 Interview: September Girls

septembergirlsThe great thing about SXSW is that you get a lot of bands coming in from abroad to test the waters of the American music scene, so we figured we ought to offer up one of those acts to you: September Girls.  The band is working with Fortuna Pop for their album, Cursing the Sea, which is a solid release.  We even changed up our set of questions a bit for the ladies to give you a different look at acts traveling to us from far away.  Read more for answers from the group’s Jessie Ward; help us welcome them when they make it our way. Pastel Colours Like Pizza

pizzaWhy do they like pizza you ask? Well, Pastel Colours have just released their second single via the Pizza Club, which is an artistic musical endeavor put on by the excellent Art Is Hard Records.  I like the pulsating rhythm that’s murkily moving beneath the vocals in the front while the guitar lines seems to cascade into some other region.  Those of you digging the dark underbelly of the psychedelic movement will surely find yourselves fans of what’s going on in this track; this is the way that sound was supposed to be created.

Austin Spotlight: I Am the Albatross

albatrossGrowing up in Austin, there’s been two things that have been a constant in the music scene: punk rock and country.  Listening to this new single from I Am the Albatross combines both those elements, making them one of the more diverse Austin acts of the moment.  This track starts off with a steady atmospheric folk element, but soon jumps into a full-steam-ahead barroom rocker, before pausing for a bit of a breather near the end of the song.  It’s definitely a dynamic approach, and one that should make the group’s Austin shows worthy of your attendance.  You can grab the band’s self-titled EP now right HERE.

Bart Davenport Unleashes New Tune

bart_davenport-800x400There’s only a couple of weeks before we all get to hear the the new record from Bart Davenport, Physical World.  There’s so many things to love about this new track; it’s got this dreamy pop styling in the music and the lyrical focuses on Bart’s indifference towards amassing popularity and fame.  It’s like a late 80s crooner just jumped out and started wining us over, which definitely works to the artist’s advantage, as there aren’t too many other acts swinging with this style at the moment.  Don’t forget that if you dig what you hear, you can grab the tune and others on March 4th from Burger Records.

So you’re bummed that you didn’t get tickets to the Neutral Milk Hotel show? Well, you can do the next best thing by joining us to catch their label mates, Hospitality.  They’re new album, Trouble, got a lot of love from our girl Nicole, and while it takes on a darker tone, it still has the same infectious sensibility as their first effort.  My personal highlight though is catch Air Waves, open, who we haven’t heard from in some time, but I’m sure that their tour indicates things are about to change.  Austin’s own Modrag will begin the night, so raise your spirits by catching the “other” best show in town.

New Tunes from Majical Cloudz

devonDevon Welsh has one of the most striking voices in the current music scene.  I’ve watched him silence crowds notoriously known for being noisy, and I’ve let his voice haunt my listening habits for the last year or so.  His album Impersonator was our #1 choice for Top 2013 Albums, and I can’t wait for his next outing.  To hold us over, he’s unleashed a great interactive video to accompany his brand new song, which you’ll find HERE.  At the moment, I’m pretty sure that there’s not a whole lot Majical Cloudz can do to sway us away from our supreme fandom.  You can also listen to the tune below….and wait patiently for the next genius release from the act.

Angel Olsen – Burn Your Fire for No Witness

angelolsenRating: ★★★★☆

One of the things that I’m always fearful of when listening to a musician working under their own name is that the music will have a tendency to get stuck in one space; it can make for a boring listen, despite your initial interest.  Luckily, that’s not how the story of Burn Your Fire for No Witness unfolds; Angel Olsen and her band have constructed a record that holds enough diversity to keep you guessing at every track.

“Unfucktheworld” had me immediately.  There’s an intimacy of the strummed guitar that’s striking, but even more appealing is how the recording still holds a bit of the buzz and crackle; it creates a sense of sincerity that one hopes for from a singer-songwriter.  But, she doesn’t stay there for too long, moving quickly into her best rock version with “Forgiven/Forgotten.”  It’s a sound that purifies the space between Vivian Girls and Screaming Females, and it serves Burn Your Fire for No Witness well by adding some movement within the album’s first moments.

For my two cents, if you’re asking, I appreciate the songs where Angel Olsen has her voice hiding just below the main mix.  “Dance Slow Decades” is one such song, allowing for the listener to attend to every minor detail for the first minute or so, just before the vocal explodes with a hollow drum beat emphasizing the emotional touch.  It’s a stark contrast to the following track “Enemy,” which creeps me out in an odd manner; it seems like Olsen is sitting next to me singing into my ear.  Although there’s still that quiver in her voice that comes with personal expression, I prefer to keep a bit more distance, playing the role of musical voyeur.

Still, the best part of the record is the diversity that goes into every track, even into the length of the songs.  As times, Angel has this sultry troubadour quality like in her performance on “High and Wild,” but she can still manage to have this pristine vocal quality on display; she does this remarkably well in the album closer, “Windows.”  These things seem like minor details, but they make the album something that exists beyond the confines of a single track, begging you to sit with it for the entirety of your listen…this is a rare feat nowadays.

When you’re finished listening to Angel Olsen‘s new album, you’re going to find that you’ll have to go back and listen again.  It’s an album that holds no great single, but rather unfolds as an undeniably wonderful listen from start to finish.  It’s easy to find an artist losing themselves and their listeners in one place while crafting a record, but that’s the opposite of what you’ll find while listening to Burn Your Fire for No Witness.

Have A Nice Weekend With Neil Finn

neil finnNeil Finn‘s Try Whistling This is still a go to Sunday afternoon, sitting on the patio on a nice day soundtrack. I have great memories of road trips and not-so-quiet dinners with the songs on that album. I really enjoyed the Pajama Club record, but Neil is back now with a new solo effort.

The new album is called Dizzy Heights is out now and while I am not in love with the title track, “Flying in the Face of Love” is a full on gem. Just try no to love it. I mean, yeah, if you are just here for the punk jammy-jams, then yeah maybe you can be a contradictory jerk, but this is a great song. I sometimes believe that Snowmine channels Neil’s work on occasion.

SXSW Interviews: Painted Palms

2233

Painted Palms is a band that we’ve really gotten into over the last year with their upbeat, catchy singles that are continually ringing in our ears.  To say we’re excited to see the group during SXSW would be a major understatement.  We’re pumped.  Founding father of the band Chris Prudhomme was kind enough to answer our burning questions and his responses can be found below.
