New Music From Dum Dum Girls

I’ll go ahead and be honest with you people, I’ve never been the biggest fan of Dum Dum Girls and have always found their side projects more interesting.  I say this so you can truly believe me when I say that this new slow burning jam “Coming Down” has immediately turned my opinion of the band.  Sure it’s simple, but it’s Mazzy Star style build up has me marking the calendar for the September 27th release of their new album Only in Dreams on Sub Pop Records.  Also of note, the band is stopping into town Friday at Mohawk for a live set that’s sure to sell out.

The IT Department – v0.9

I would like to thank the Council for appointing me the head of the IT Department. The IT Department at Austin Town Hall will be the place for the more electronic side of the industry. IT will cover Electro, Dance Pop, straight up Electronica, whatever. IT will be synth driven, but not always purely synthetic.

This is the beta run with v0.9, so I’ll be taking the chance to catch you up on a few of my favorites of the year so far. This post has some big names, a few unknowns and some pure drum and bass. So click through for tracks from the Horrors, Little Dragon and Amon Tobin as well as a couple newcomers.

Edit: Adding one more track from Casiokids…

New Jam from Gross Magic

I hadn’t really heard of Gross Magic until earlier today, but browsing through the net often leads to great finds.  Sam McGarrigle is the man behind these sounds, and his tastes are sort of all over the place on his Teen Jamz EP, but that’s sort of what makes it so wonderful; you get to listen to a sound that never bores.  His effortless moments of cool on this title track are just one styling he offers, so feel free to check out the rest of the tracks on this five song EP before your judgment is final. Trust me, it’s definitely been blasting in my house all day.

New Music from Library Voices

Perhaps those in Canada are hip to Library Voices, but the word is slowly starting to spread South about this great little pop band.  They’ve just signed up to release their record, Summer of Lust, via Dine Alone Records on October 18th.  It’s a seemingly busy track, filled with hooks and beeps, and even a bit of Win Butler-ish yelping during parts.  All signs at the moment point towards this band completely winning over the States, bringing us more infectious pop tunes that will never fail to please our ears.  Hello Library Voices, welcome to the States.

Leatherbag – Yellow Television

Rating: ★★★☆☆

In the aftermath of Hurricane Rita, back in 2005, lead singer Randy Reynolds relocated to our great city of Austin. Lucky for us he did, because after this, he formed the American Rock band known as Leatherbag. Six years, various changes in the band and multiple albums, later, the band consists of three members: Reynolds, Drew Emmons, and Daniel Blanchard. Together, they craft a classic rock record in Yellow Television, which reflects on the general current state of things in the world.

The first number is dubbed “Imitation Generation” and kicks things off quickly and with the flair that one would expect of Leatherbag. A solid drum beat, angled guitars lead your in what seems calmly, but then it has those yelled catchy choruses with group vocals adding some texture behind Reynolds’ vocals.  As the name already suggests, the song comes off as more of a social comment on the repetition of any creative work by this generation. He remarks that “love is dead and so is rock and roll,” which is a bit grim, but gets the point across that we are in need of a little originality, perhaps to be delivered by this band in some form? It’s a good opening beat, but it isn’t exactly spectacular.

Then Leatherbag transitions to the title track “Yellow TV,” which relies on that catchy chorus to pull you into this band’s style if they hadn’t already. From here on, the rest of the album is relatively similar to these first two songs; which is a double edged sword. There is still the alluring rock style, which at some points reminds me a bit of Ted Leo, on jams like “Waxing Nostalgic.” However, it gets a bit redundant when the beginnings of most of the songs start out in the same way; it gets hard to discern one song from the other. Some are just too similar for their own good and you can get lost on the natural order of this album. That being said, stick around for “Sincerity,” which is ten minutes of bluesy guitar and the variety you’ve been missing up to that point.

Overall, it’s a pretty solid American Rock album. You can find the slightly grunge guitars and the sincerely indelicate vocals that you’d expect as well as some surprising freshness that you wouldn’t.  Albeit, there are some weaker tracks, and it gets a little repetitive at points, but there is still something worth enjoying on Yellow Television.

New Track from Big Wave Riders

We talked about Finnish starlets, Big Wave Riders, a bit ago, but as the date nears closer for the release of their Behind These Walls EP, which will be available to you on September 7th, they just keep releasing more tracks. You’ve got to check out the latest, especially with hints of high-stepping grooves laying just beneath the surface, then exploding during the chorus–even with a screeching bit of guitar solo to wrap the song up nicely. There’s just this bit of craftiness living beneath the feeling of fun that you’ll probably associate with this song, and who doesn’t like to see those two things meet up? Enjoy folks.

New Pop Jam From Princeton

It’s not too often that I get sent a song and immediately want to share it with our audience as fast as I can.  This new jam “Clamoring For Your Heart” from long time ATH favorite Princeton is one of those songs already getting major plays in our offices.  It’s only intended as a single as the A-side to a new 7″ due out August 30th on Hit City U.S.A.  Looking forward to more great music from this band in the future.

More New Music From Blitzen Trapper

New music from indie-folk band Blitzen Trapper has been springing up all over the internet since the announcement of their new album American Goldwing due out September 13th on Sub Pop Records.  From songs like “I Love the Way You Walk Away”, it seems like the band is embarking on a more country styled record as opposed to their usual folky sound.  Some people in the hipster world may shy away from such things, but I think I could go for something a little different.  However you feel about it, we’ve got the new song streaming and downloadable below.

More New Music From Bare Wires

We ATH kids professed our love for the pop styles of Bare Wires shortly after catching some of their tunes during SXSW back in March.  It’s easy to like a band when they make catchy as hell songs like “Cheap Perfume” found below.  This tune is set to appear on new album from the band Cheap Perfume due out October 18th on Southpaw Records.  Dig that shiz.
