Howlies

A lot of well deserved buzz has been going around about this new Atlanta band Howlies.  We thought to bring you aboard the hype train, we’d post a new song by the band entitled “Dirty Woman”.  The song currently appears on a CD single Sea Level/Dirty Woman and will also show up on a forthcoming debut LP.  If you purchase the new single for $15, the label will throw in a free digital download and a t-shirt.  What a deal!

David Lindley @ Cactus Cafe (8/15)

David Lindley plays the extremely intimate Cactus Cafe on the UT campus Friday night. Who’s David Lindley? Only one of the most sought after sessions guitarists in the world –  he’s played with Bob Dylan, Jackson Browne and Warren Zevon to name a few – in addition to fronting bands of his own. Ben Harper cites his unique slide guitar style as a major influence. If you go, be sure to pay attention to the equipment Mr. Lindley breaks out for he’s a bit of an eccentric with a reputation for using cheap, amateur guitars which generate a distinct sound. Still need convincing? Check out the clip below of him performing “Where’s Jimmy?” live somewhere circa 97. Tickets are at the door for $20 with things starting at 9pm.

Stream Human Highway

Nick Thornburn’s (Islands) latest side project with folk singer Jim Guthrie, Human Highway, has their entire new album Moody Motorcycle streaming over on myspace. A lot of critics are raving about Mr. Thornburn’s newest venture. What do you think? You can take the song “The Sound” along with you if myspace crashes your computer as much as mine.

We have an mp3 of the band posted for you below called “Lost Coastlines” which is set to appear on the band’s latest The Stand Ins due out September 9th. “Lost Coastlines” features your last chance at Jonathan Meiburg in Okkervil, as he now fronts another Austin heavy hitter Shearwater. You can pre-order a copy of The Stand Ins from this fancy website.

Sunny Day Real Estate Live

Why would we be posting about SDR, a band that’s been dead since the late 90’s you say? Well, we recently saw that the MTV Subterranean blog posted a video from 1994 of a live in studio performance from the band. The in studio is a 3 song set with great sound and even better video quality. Not familiar with Sunny Day Real Estate, one of the first emo bands? Have a listen to one of the band’s biggest hits “In Circles” below:

Toots & the Maytals @ Antones – 8/13

This summer I went back in time and rediscovered classic reggae, and by that, I mean the stuff that goes beyond the adoration for Bob Marley. Apparently it all had a great deal to do with the evolution in British punk, as well as that late 90s ska scene over on this continent. In that rediscovery lay the much heralded Toots, who some of you might remember from ACL a few years back. Lucky for me, he is playing tomorrow night at Antones w/ Outlaw Nation. Doors are at 8 PM.
