Toots & the Maytals @ Antones – 8/13

This summer I went back in time and rediscovered classic reggae, and by that, I mean the stuff that goes beyond the adoration for Bob Marley. Apparently it all had a great deal to do with the evolution in British punk, as well as that late 90s ska scene over on this continent. In that rediscovery lay the much heralded Toots, who some of you might remember from ACL a few years back. Lucky for me, he is playing tomorrow night at Antones w/ Outlaw Nation. Doors are at 8 PM.

Scream

It’s not easy writing comics. Sometimes I stare at a blank sheet of paper for hours with nothing to show for it. However, every now and then the comic gods smile down upon me and a strip practically writes itself. Chris Cornell teaming up with Timbaland is one of those moments.

Austin Sound Check Feedback

Our friends over at Austin Sound Check have created a mix tape chock full of local acts called Feedback Vol. 1. The Feedback features tracks from Austin acts like Built by Snow, The Band of Heathens, and Full Service among others. Check out the free mp3s from some great Austin bands on the Austin Sound Check Site. Don’t forget to leave some comments on their site if you enjoy the music.

Smoking Popes & Koufax @ Mohawk 8/12

If you are looking for a night of classic indie pop from some well-established bands then you should head out to The Mohawk tomorrow night! Smoking Popes are headlining, along with Koufax, who used to be heralded as one of indie-pop’s greats. Not to mention, you will get to see the local Austin band, Masonic. It’s sure to be a good night of classic pop tunes in the vein of the indie realm. Koufax should be debuting some new material, which has the possibility of being surprisingly good. See for yourself.

Doors to the show open at 8 PM, and you can purchase $10 tickets to the show.

08/06 The Hold Steady @ The Parish

In front of a sell out crowd at The Parish on Wednesday night, Brooklyn’s finest The Hold Steady set off some M80’s with their raucous set-opener “Constructive Summer.” “We’re gonna build something this summer,” declared frontman Craig Finn as the “party pit” stumbled their way to the front of the stage. Touring in support of Stay Positive, the gang was sharper than keyboardist Franz Nicolay’s on-stage attire and brought a steady flow of beer-drinking, pot-smoking, Max Weinberg-lovin’, ass-shaking rock ‘n’ roll. This was my third time seeing The Hold Steady and by far, their best show in Austin yet. A lot had to do with the Parish’s flawless acoustics and the band’s diverse choice of songs for the evening (review and set list after the jump). Read more
