Club 8 Release Just Like Heaven

Contrary to popular opinion, this new Club 8 track is not a Cure cover song, and in fact, doesn’t even seem close, aside from the song’s title. There’s something about the group that faintly reminds me of Raveonettes, using a similar adherence to a simplistic formula; the rhythm section is tight and buoyant, but never out of pocket. This allows the group to focus on the pop sensibility, whether that comes via the sharp guitar notes or the coolness of the vocal delivery. This is their second single recently, so let’s hope we’re getting more classic pop vibes from the Swedish outfit in the new future, and maybe even a nice little LP.

New Stuff from Postal Blue

Adriano do Cuoto has been hinting at a new Postal Blue release for a few weeks, and I’m glad we finally get to hear a brand new single. I love the way I was suckered into this one, as the track felt really light for the first 10 seconds before it sort of took on that next level, building this toe-tapping pace that’s perfect for this brand of jangling pop. Guitars churn over and over one another, hitting those crystal notes, almost dancing about your inner ear. All the while, do Couto plays the coy crooner, letting his softened tones creep into the track from the shadows of the track; it ends up giving off this sort of beachfront power-pop groove, and I’m totally here for it. Are you?

Savak Drop New Single, Will Get Fooled Again

I was already a big fan of what Savak have accomplished through the years, but with their latest, they seem to be hitting the right notes, especially as I’ve been in a 1st wave emo mood as of late. There’s something in here that certainly feels a kinship to that area, with bright guitars and melody working in unison to build this powerful melodic core. But, even there, the band seem capable of adhering to the darker edges of rock n’ roll after the punk explosion; something in this song feels forlorn and brooding, particularly in the way some of the ways the vocals fall over the syllables. Just another reason to pencil in Flavors of Paradise on your LPs to buy; its out March 1st.

The Infinites Share The Bureaucrat

Had you been on this site at all lately, you would have hopefully heeded our advice to pick up the fresh LP from the Infinites, and today there’s another song to give you a nudge. Of the three singles we’ve heard, this one opens up with the most urgency, pounding drums and guitar lines rushing to set the scene for you; it’s that sort of driving sensation like you’re rushing towards the light on the horizon. Of course, Jared’s vocals are the steadying force, the sensible driver, letting you know that it’s okay to take it all in as you speed towards your destination. I loved the guitar work in-between verses, sharp and jagged like this old fella loves. Archetypes is out on February 16th via Meritorio Records.

New Stuff from 12XU: Water Damage + Love Child

It’s Bandcamp Friday, so I’m trying to hook you onto some cool stuff as much as I can today, like two new LPs that just popped up via Austin’s 12XU Label. The first is the sonic masterminds, Water Damage, who’ve just announced In E. Their perhaps one of the best live acts to capture in the Austin scene, building layer after layer and intoxicating listeners with this driving thunder that gets into your bones. This is the perfect place to lose yourself and then find your feet, again and again; it’s out on April 12th.

The label also announced a Love Child compilation, culling hits from 1988-1993. Honestly, it’s a band I hadn’t heard of, but now I have to have it! It’s the perfect bit of ramshackle pop music; there are elements of punk madness, but it’s all circled around well-executed pop structures. I keep thinking of a more rocking version of the Vaselines for some reason. Never Meant to Be is out on March 8th.

New Single From Late Bloomer

North Carolina’s Late Bloomer shared this new single called “Hope For Rain” a few days ago and I wanted to get it to your ears before the weekend. The song effortlessly combines a sort of DIY indie, college rock sound with some lovely twang and slide guitar. Hopefully you’ll give it a listen below and also consider a pre-order of their new album entitled Another One Again. That’s due out on March 1st via Self Aware Records.

Mikey Coltun (Mdou Moctar) Announces New Label

I’ve always been a fan of the Tuareg sound, and for those in the States, there’s a handful of artists like Mdou Moctar who come to our minds. Just this week, Mdou member/collaborator Mikey Coltun announced Purplish Records, his very own label, with some obvious ties to the band’s work because the first release features both Mikey and Ahmoudou; it’s two very different takes on what looks to be a family of creativity. On Mikey’s side, you get his foray into understanding his own ancestry, and then flip it over to hear Ahmoudou play acoustic guitar with his brother Abdoulaye. For now, you can either grab a limited cassette, or just stream at Bandcamp and below!

Touch Girl Apple Blossom Share Sidewalk Video

One of the under the radar gems that I didn’t discover until a bit late in the game was the debut EP from Touch Girl Apple Blossom, and they were right in my own backyard (metaphorically, not actually!). This Austin quartet sounds a bit like they’ve taken all the charm from acts such at Juliana Hatfield and Diet Cig, borrowed the hooks, then run away to pile a little bit of grit and atmosphere to the mixture. It’s sort of like an amalgam of pop and weirdo, which is everything I absolutely love. So, now that I’m all over the band, I wanted you to be too, which is why I bring you their fresh video for “Sidewalk,” with a reminder their EP is now available via 7″!

Cool Sounds Return with Bugobeat

Danis Lacey flipped the script on all of us with Like That, the 2022 LP that saw Cool Sounds moving away from a very run-of-the-mill Aussie sound into something with a bit more groove, a bit more funk. So, as we listen to the first single from the BUG0BEAT EP, it makes complete sense that Danis is pushing the oddities of funk just a little bit more; you can particularly hear the way the guitar lines and keys are shifted atop one another to kind of craft this dense dance groove. Personally, I love how there’s some middling guitar work that’s sort of the tether between the early days of the project and present funk. Chapter Music will be putting the BUG0BEAT EP out on March 1st.

Houses of Heaven Release Within Without

Industrial synth pop from Houses of Heaven, “Within/Without” is the first single and title track from the forthcoming album. The song briefly eases in before going full on with an anchor bassline, EBM kick and synth flourishes that lead to the elevated and cathartic chorus.

Shipping at the end of April, the pre-order for the marbled-gray vinyl released via Felte Records is live over on their Bandcamp. Other tracks on the record boast guest vocals from Nitzer Ebb’s Douglas McCarthy and (former Austinite) Mariana Saldaa of BOAN. Probably gonna pre-order this one for use at vinyl nights…
