While Sonny Smith has been at it for quite awhile, there’s something about his latest work that’s really got my ears perked up for the new LP. For instance, and maybe I’m stretching here, but there’s definitely something in this song that feels like it was penned by Dan Treacy. I’m not sure whether its the way that bits of accompaniment join in out of nowhere or that combo vocal that’s charming in the middle. It could even be that digressing guitar line at 47 seconds squiggling its way right into your ears. So if Self Awareness Through Macrame is going to be Sonny and the Sunsets nod to Television Personalities, I’m absolutely here for that! Rocks In Your Head drop the LP on August 25th.

A Giant Dog Drop I Believe Single

When I first clicked on the latest from A Giant Dog, I really thought that Sabrina was channeling Marissa from Screaming Females; her voice takes on that sort of guttural tone, but it’s all a huge set-up! Ellis voice is instantly pushed to catchy heights as the band smashes down behind her, stomping in their heavy brand of pop rock. What I’m loving from the new stuff, however, is all the little details that come in throughout the track, particularly when you get to the interlude and all the sweeping emotions that get sprinkled across there. Get ready to enjoy the hell out of Bite; it drops on August 25th via Merge.

Lutalo Drops Push Back Baby Video

Listening to Lutalo allows me to really digest my days; they create this mixture of soul and rock and smear it atop a pop canvas that leaves me with a sense of joyous bewilderment. Their lyrical content is always sharp, with this track hitting at capitalist greed and the systemic way it continues to run its course. But, you’d be forgiven if you miss that on the first run through (as I beg you to back) because the rhythmic bubbling is pure mental escapism. Not really sure where you’d file this, genre-wise, and perhaps that’s their best attribute, crafting tunes that speak, musically, for themself, with no need for identification. Keep an eye out for the Again EP, dropping via Winspear on August 25th, then hitting the road with Katy Kirby.

Well unless you just straight up don’t read about the new tunes on our site, I’m sure you’ve seen my fandom around the upcoming LP from Danny Blackwell and his LA based project Night Beats. If you did miss it, go back and check out the albums lead banger “Hot Ghee,” the psych trip of “Thank You,” and the groovy one “Nightmare.” Once you’re done there, come on back for the last preview of the new album with this slow R&B melody of “Blue.” Hit play and melt into the beats.

All of these new tracks will appear on the new Night Beats album Rajan which is due out this Friday the 14th via Suicide Squeeze/Fuzz Club.

Skeleten Drop Heart Full of Tenderness Single

As of late, I’ve been hanging out in my own head, which can be either good or bad, depending upon how you look at it. In that, I’ve also kind of delved into some really chilled late night beats, like Sydney’s Skeleten. On his latest single, there’s this great vibe, like you’re walking through some dark club tunnel, beat bouncing through your ears, but things are just a bit eerie, shadows and lights creeping in from the corners of your eyes. The vocals are seductive, particularly when you focus on the horizon of the visualizer, awaiting the slight pop switch that kicks in right at 1:45ish; it adds another dimension that completes the supreme escapism one might be seeking. Skeleten will release their debut album Under Utopia on July 28th via 2MR.

Sloppy Heads Announce Sometimes Just One Second LP

If you were brandishing your style of pop as slop-rock, and you wanted to go down as the coolest, how would you do it? Oh, get James McNew (its James Day at ATH!) to play dabble throughout your whole LP? Maybe get production help from Gary Olson? You might even get legendary Sesame Street animator Al Jarnow to create the LP’s first video! The new Sloppy Heads LP has all those bullet points, all of that to go with calling legendary DIY label Shrimper home for the release of Sometimes Just One Second. But what about the music? Greeted by an startling howl, you’d be forgiven for thinking the band have slid into Halloween punk, but they turn that carnivalesque manufacturing into a buzzsaw brand of pop. The song lurches and pulses, spinning into this electronic whirlpool of fuzzed electro pop. Lock into the vibe and the visuals suck you right into the wormhole that is this glorious single! The Radio Field Share New Single (ft. Phantom Handshakes)

German outfit The Radio Field are an up-and-coming band on the whole dream meets jangle realm, and I for one and totally on board. They’ve dropped an EP, but as they ready their debut LP, they’ve enlisted Federica from ATH faves Phantom Handshakes to join them in the fun on this go round. Once the starting gun is off, the guitars twist and turn, opening their jangles into the dreamier realms of of the genre. Vocals enter, overlapping one another; you get a deep tone meeting up with angelic notes, intermingling for maximum sweetness. Churning and turning, there’s a nice emphatic close with some added punch, leaving us with the promise that Don’ts and Dos is going to be a banger; look for the release this August via Subjangle.

Say Sue Me Share Mind is Light + Tour the States

One of the many acts we’ve been introduced to by the kind folks over at Damnably is Say Sue Me; we’ve fawned over their LPs and their live sets for years, with more folks in the US able to catch them this week. In honor of their tour, they dropped another single last week while I was away, which I’ve now go below. I love how the song seems to combine two tracks into one; there’s a driving feel beneath, beating its own path while the distorted guitars rise to the surface, both letting the sublime vocals wash through the middle. Another reminder of how great the group is, and as if you needed more proof, they got James from Yo La Tengo to do the single artwork! Check out their US tour dates HERE; they kick off this week!

Annie Hart Releases What Makes Me Video

As a founding member of Au Revoir Simone, one would think that Annie Hart would be brimming with confidence as a songwriter. But, like all of us, Annie was plagued with self-doubt, wandering what she was truly good at…and feeling a bit down and out. So, what better way than to create a song that’s completely the opposite of that solitude? Her latest single instantly springs to life, with sparkling keys and percussion delivering a snappiness that’s insanely catchy. Her voice definitely sounds like its found its place, playfully toying with the listener as notes seem spaced out to deliver the proper emotional tug. In the video, an impromptu recording with friends, shows a spirited Hart, hopefully finding her power and she grins and dances for her audience. She will release The Weight of a Wave on August 4th via Uninhabitable Mansions.

Rad Gnar Share Fresh Single

If you have yet to catch on to Austin’s Rad Gnar, let me hip you the group with this fresh track, “Scene.” The group is a fairly recent project, featuring members of Big Bill and Basketball Shorts, so you know there’s going to be a bit of a punk mentality; we’re close with various members too, so we know how important guitar-monies are too, which you’ll hear soaring throughout this track. As I press play again and again, I keep thinking of it as a mixture of early Saves the Day and Alkaline Trio…and I don’t mind that one bit. But, before you pass judgment, take a listen to the melodic break in the song’s middle, illustrating just how much the group have to offer in their sound. You may be too cool for pop punk, but you’re never too cool for great musicianship. Keep an eye out!
