It’s Friday. And you’re looking at taking advantage of Bandcamp Friday deals. But, here, we’ve got more SXSW Interviews for you, as our eyes are on that prize…so to speak. We caught up with Best Move, as they prepare to head our way for the festival. As you’ll see, the band have a new album on the horizon with Park the Van, so there’s going to be tons of new stuff, so if you can’t make it to Texas, be sure to keep an ear out.
JR Kurtz has made his name as the drummer for a slew of acts, from CSS to Frenship, and tons more. But, he’s taking the reins on his own, and releasing Dream Warrior under the name of Libby Beard. Today we’re sharing a track that I think captures some of his admitted influences from Sonic Youth and Sebadoh to These Arms are Snakes and Junior Boys. His matter-of-fact delivery gets smashed to pieces by walls of feedback, turning the song into a sort of West Coast heavy surf feel, done within the confines a one-bedroom art studio. Personally, I’m digging the great vocal climb that rides in around 2:30, so be sure to give it a peep if you can; Dream Warrior arrives on March 11th.
It’s so wild that SXSW is now kicking off in just one week and we can finally get out and see some live tunes again. As things draw ever closer, we have a few more interviews to bring your way which are hopefully highlighting some artists who weren’t already on your radar. Today we move forward with established NYC by way of Leeds artist Coyle Girelli. You can check out his responses and some of his tunes after the jump.
It’s a bummer that Beerland doesn’t exist anymore, as this new Friday Boys single seems like the perfect tune to cram into the old club’s walls. The song has this anxious pounding, crafting this suffocating heaviness; this atmosphere sets up the slight (and I mean slight) melodic twist in the chorus here, allowing for the perfect contrast. Going through the tune, it hints at the sort of discordant almost-punk offered up by the likes of Protomartyr, with Scott’s guitar skittering at the edges, so you’re likely going to find folks clamoring to catch the act; they play tonight in Austin at the Swan Dive!
What better way to announce your new LP than to scream at the rafters and just say It’s Mick Trouble’s Second LP, which is exactly what Mick Trouble has done to announce his new record for Emotional Response. Jumping right in here, it’s nearly impossible to not fall in love with this new single; it can be filed in the bin with acts like the Jam or Nick Lowe, though I still always think the project borders on the fun side of TV Personalities too. It’s all about angular riffs, toying with melody and structure, and ultimately hooks galore with a DIY ethos. If the world had better tastes, this track (and album) would zoom straight to number one! I can’t even begin to explain to you how infectious and cool it all sounds! It’s Mick Trouble’s Second LP is out on April 5th via Emotional Response; it’s a must pick up immediately!
Have you picked up your copy of Fortunato Durutti Marinetti‘s Memory’s Fool LP yet? I ordered mine, and hopefully will get it early, as I have a sneaking suspicion that the record’s going to be cherished by those paying close attention. As far as this latest single goes, it seems more stripped back at first, radiating like a solemn Lou Reed. Once you get to that one-minute mark, the song begins to spring to life, building various textures into the song, layering some horns and various pieces of percussive notes together. If you know what’s good for you, you’ll spend a little of your money on grabbing this from Bobo Integral today on Bandcamp…with the LP dropping worldwide next Friday.
As we push through the final weeks before SXSW, we’ve got another interview; this one’s from Neighbor Lady, who will be working with Park the Van. In fact, they’ve got a brand new single to share with you today, so I wanted to make sure to include that new jam below. They’ve got a couple of showcases (Park the Van/Athens in Austin), and I reckon you can find them at some day gigs if you look hard enough. Read on and enjoy the new hit!
We covered the first few Sooner tracks, and as another one has hit the airwaves, it seems fitting we slide it into today…not to mention it’s a great jam. When I listen to the band, they seem like they’ve combined a bunch of influences to create their own sound; you can file them behind the Beths in one spot, or turn the page and find the more ethereal side of Beach House blooming. This particular single is all about that climactic build, toying with your feelings in the verses, coming in soft and quiet, only to churn out heavy bliss in the chorus. Definitely a band that should be on more people’s radar; their album Days and Nights will drop on March 25 via Good Eye Records.
If Blue Ocean isn’t on your radar, you haven’t been reading this site! But, we can fix that right now by sharing the band’s brand new video for “Summer of Hands.” This tune comes from the group’s new Blue Ocean LP, which compiles remastered tunes from their stellar EPs (via Paisley Shirt) and puts them on one great release courtesy of Dandy Boy Records. If you’re new to the project, this is a perfect introduction, as they are one of the best at combining genres, as they do here by taking a jangling line of indie rock then covering it with this atmospheric squall of beautiful noise. The accompanying video here seems to match that, taking imagery of scenes near the blue oceans and coating them in a nice little bit of haze. Don’t wait for Bandcamp Friday, buy the LP HERE.
