Impressive New Tune From Spirit Was

Nick Corbo is a guy you probably knew during his time playing bass and sometimes signing in the innovative indie rock band LVL UP. After his old band decided to go their separate ways, Corbo stepped out on his own under the recording moniker Spirit Was. Many years were spent perfecting the sound of this new project and now Spirit Was will release a brand new, debut LP on October 22nd entitled Heaven’s Just a Cloud via Danger Collective Records. Prior to that release date, we’ve been treated to this post-emo, Built to Spill, muddy, blues inspired number called “Come Back up to the House”. I love the way the song progresses from this acoustic ballad, into a sort of muddy, indie rock gem with some stellar female vocals to give it a softer touch. You’ll want to check it out below.

Another Hit from Teether & Kuya Neil

Why not start off Tuesday with a little hip-hop, since you know, its not every day that pops up on our radar. This Teether & Kuya Neil is the latest pickup from Chapter Music, and honestly, it kind of feels like what you’d get if you took those old Dizzee Rascal hits and slowed things down to an almost creep…then they smooth it out with this haunting little bounce. But, one of the reasons I love the work of this duo is that they draw strong narratives in their lyrical content, with this track taking on their own background as children of immigrants. They’ll drop their GLYPH Mixtape this coming November.

Emma Russack & Lachlan Denton Share Done My Time

On the first single from Emma Russack & Lachlan Denton, Lach took the spotlight, but here with “Done My Time” the control is given to Emma. I really fell in love with the percussion here, soft and gentle, like something you’d hear on an early Belle and Seabass album, or a Kings of Convenience track, like a fox running through the snow. Emma maneuvers her voice atop a softened strum and a punctuating piano line, adding just the faintest bounce. Fall’s creeping in on our end of things, and its starting to open my tastes up a bit more to some great contemplative pop, so this is perfectly fitting. Something is Going to Change Tomorrow, Today. What Will You Do? What Will You Say? is out on October 8th via Bobo Integral.

Astrid Swan Shares New Single, Luxuries

It’s probably fair to say that Astrid Swan doesn’t get a fair shake outside of Europe, but I hope by shining the tiniest light (on all 8 of our readers!), one of them will find her work meaningful. At first, the song takes on this delicate mood, Astrid’s voice soaring over a bare bit of piano. Carefully, you can start to hear some accompaniment creep up from the distance, plucked strings and backing vocals; it helps to uplift the spirit, which sort of coincides with the thematic elements that course through this song (and the LP); a cancer survivor, Astrid says this song is about “knowing death is near, and living life to the fullest while idealizing the state where one does not worry about each day and season because it may well be the last.” Her new album D/Other will be out on October 8th via Soliti.

Welcome to another Monday my friends. First, taking a minute here, as I’m writing this post, to celebrate the 7 day young Rhys Bennett Lankford! That’s right, went and had me another one of those kids, and its been a lot of fun, and well, we’re super stoked on the lil’ fella. That said, we also had a short week, so maybe we didn’t get as many jams in as we might otherwise. But, rest assured, we’ve got a pretty solid little collection of tunes here for you to begin your week, with quite a few ATX appearances from the likes of Lola Tried, American Friend and more. Lola Tried Drop Renvers EP

Today let’s celebrate another great release from one of our favorite Austin bands, Lola Tried. The band haven’t released anything new since their eponymous debut in 2018, but they’re coming back with a vengeance, packing some pop rock that’s bold and boisterous. I love how the guitar work on this single seems to be holding back, just teasing us on the cusp of rock, all before letting lose to drop in these crunchy old school emo-style riffs. Lauren’s vocal control is phenomenal, bold and angry where it needs, holding onto melody when called for; the band’s backing vocals also add a nice little textural harmony in there that certainly doesn’t hurt. Stoked for the band, so celebrate with us by streaming the whole Renvers EP today. If you’re in the ATX area, the band celebrate the EP with a show tonight at Native Hostel.

The first minute or so of this new Smoke Bellow tune is sort of this meditative mood, like there’s been a glitch in the Matrix and we’re all just biding time as we watched the giant-headed characters on the screen. Meredith McHugh conducts here voice like she’s welcoming you to some sort of psychedelic retreat, a sort of softened mantra that beckons you to fall deep into the contemplative nature of this tune. You look up on the screen, and you’re united by the rest of the big heads, taking part in the joyousness of sonic exploration. I love how just as I think I’ve got this lot figured out, they take a turn and lead me somewhere else. I’ll gladly follow to the release of Open for Business, out next week via Trouble in Mind Records.

Constant Follower Share Weave of the World

We’re starting to move into those cooler evenings (you know, dropping to the low 90s), so stumbling into the latest from Constant Follower seems the perfect way to move into the Fall. For starters, we don’t have to wait before we meet the careful craft of Stephen McAll; he offers himself to the listener, laying his soul before us. He drapes it all over this mild-mannered guitar work, leaving plenty of space in the song’s middle for us all to take stock of our lives and what we’ve got going around us. This song appears on Neither Is, Nor Ever Was, which drops in October via Shimmy Disc/Joyful Noise.

Central Heat Exchange Share Dusty Glass

Okay, so this song’s been bouncing around for a day or so, but give a fella a break; I just had a kid, and I’m still here writing about my friends music. The glorious supergroup Central Heat Exchange dropped this tune, letting a little light sine on our lives. Every time the group shares a new single, I’m so impressed and overwhelmed by the balance between the guitar work and the pleasantness of whoever is chosen to helm the vocals; they’re reaching softened melody like no one else at the moment, continuing to deliver promise for their LP, which drops today via Citrus City, Birthday Cake Media and Sunroom Records.

Power Supply Announce Debut Album

If you’re up on your Aussie hit-making machines, you probably have heard of Ooga Boogas, and if not, you’ve probably heard other projects by the members (most notably Mikey Young). But, when the band broke up, Leon Stackpole went about writing his own tunes, then recruited a bunch of friends to play with him under the name Power Supply. We’ve got a new single with the announcement of their debut LP, In the Time of the Sabre-Toothed Tiger, and man, this just feels like exactly what I’ve been looking for these days. Throughout, the song sort of has this rolling gallop to it, with the lyrics sort of weaving in nonsensical elements to kind of craft its very own theme. For some reason, I keep thinking of this tune as a Joanthan Richman tracked channeled through a Robert Pollard drinking session. Try it on for yourself! The LP drops October 22nd via Goner Records.
