Sweet Nobody Announce We’re Trying Our Best

If you wanted to take the best of the Beths, Alvvays and Rosie Tucker, then toss into a mixing bowl, you might get the flavor of Sweet Nobody. Playing on the edge of dreamy pop, with introspective lyrical play, you’re sure to find their latest single rewarding. Personally, I can relate to the subject matter to, battling with your inner demons to fight through creative lows in order to get to the other side and create freely, no matter what you’re crafting. The song is the first single from the band’s We’re Trying Our Best LP, which is slated for release this September via Daydream Records.

Grace and Elliott Share Beauty Queen

I’m not going to lie, when reading about Grace and Elliott, I had to look up the Island of Guernsey where they live (it’s in the English Channel). But, one thing I was assured of was the power of Grace’s voice; it was striking from the very minute the first verse comes into play. At times it appears fragile, like it could shatter in thin air, but other moments it’s purely passion, like a fiery roar from the deepest regions of her soul. Plus, you mix that in with the emotive quality of the interplay between guitar and bass, and well, these two had me wrapped around their finger in an instant, so I reckoned I should put that before you!

Monnone Alone Drop Time Is On the Run Video

Opening with Hamish Kilgour (the Clean) in your new video is bound to get some eyes turning your way, and well, if not, then at least the new Monnone Alone song is a ray of light in these rainy Austin days. I love the uplifting jangle of the guitar tones, almost hinting at sort of surf-worthy vibes, though the bright spot is the way Mark always plays with monosyllabic lines; the do-do-dos add an extra melodic texture that matches the electronic pulse of the tune. Plus, there’s a lot of open space in this tune for the guitars to kind of run and play, frolic about in the mix if you will. This is the second single on Stay Foggy, the new LP out in September via Lost and Lonesome/RoyalMint/EmoResponse/Meritorio.

Stream The Rightovers Kruise Kontrol EP

The last time that I checked in with The Rightovers, they were crafting these jangling power-pop gems; the tunes were happy, shining with melodies and hooks. On their latest Kruise Kontrol EP, they’ve traded the jangles for a heavier feel, giving the band a heavier vibe, though one still wholly rooted to the vibes of pop rock. Some of the songs have these huge sonic walls, like the instrumental piece “Want You,” feeling like some leftover piece of Kevin Shields artistry. “Stereocrush” is probably one of my favorite tunes here, offering up this sort of 80s influenced bedroom pop vibe. And, maybe you just want good old fashioned pop rock n’ roll, so check out “Kruise Kontrol,” a tune that lets you know the band never left the hooks behind. Jigsaw Records just released the EP, so get to it!

Media Jeweler Announce the Sublime Sculpture of Being Alive

It’s crazy how full a song can sound, even if it comes in just barely over a minute and a half, but such is the power of the craft Media Jeweler are pushing forth with the announcement of their new LP, The Sublime Sculpture of Being Alive. A few quick shards of guitar glass hang in the air before the band frantically start rolling the song forward; vocals are hurled at the listener, like a military assault on your auditory senses…that’s before things switch gears. The song takes on an operatic note, the sort of left-field art rock the band are known for, providing you with a little something extra to sink your teeth into. If you dig it, the new LP is out this August via Fire Talk Records.

New Music from Alex Riegelman

Are we Alex Riegelman stans? Uh, you bet we are! And why wouldn’t we be, as Alex is one of the kind souls of Austin’s music scene…and that doesn’t even scratch the surface of his songwriting ability. On his latest single “Once” you get to hear the other side of Alex (who stars in Big Bill), as he’s offering up this shuffling little pop number, fueled by these lightly jangling guitar riffs and uplifting synth lines. Honestly, the star, for me, is Alex’s vocal performance; I thought his opening verses were great, but then he erupts to let his pipes soar along with his guitar chops! Damn, that breakdown in the song’s close is stupendous. Get you some Alex!

The Catenary Wires Release Face on the Rail Line Video

The forthcoming LP from The Catenary Wires is high upon our list of anticipated releases this year, and now we’ve got another single to give us a little peek at what’s inside. As soon as the video plays, I honestly felt like I was at home in the 80s listening to my dad’s record collection; the core vocals of Amelia and Rob over that light strum just held this nostalgic breath in my lungs for an instant. But, as the song progresses, there are some little details like the slight buzz around the 1:07 mark (and again later) that kind of ties the band to their modern peers. In a weird way, it feels like your favorite indiepop stars spent the weekend holed up with J Spaceman, and I mean that in the most positive light possible. The little turn at 2:13 doesn’t do anything to hurt either, sweeping emotion through your bedroom speakers. Look for their new LP Birling Gap on June 18th via Skep Wax/Shelflife.

SB Olson Shares No More Trouble

As of late, my tastes have been bouncing all over the place, and that’s kind of where this SB Olson tune hit me. It’s got this little underhanded blues boogie to it; it’s that sort of crunchy barroom scoot that all my red dirt friends were super into during our college years. Plus, with Olson’s heavily warm vocals, you kind of get that sort of classic Americana feel, like one would get when listening to an M. Ward album. The North Dakota songwriter just seems to be writing hit after hit at the moment, so if you’re so inclined, you might want to stop in and give his catalog a little look-see. This tune comes from his latest, Sweet Creatures.

Delivery Announce Yes We Do EP

Another day, another tune from Melbourne I can get behind; this time we’ve got a fresh new hit from Melbourne’s Delivery. The core of the song swirls around this tight proto-punk guitar line, coiled darkly in the mix so that the vocals achieve this sort of cavernous indifference that fuses the stark nature of the tune with elements of super cool. At times, you can hear little surfy guitar licks come into play, mostly between verses, illustrating what the band have in store for you down the line. Their Yes We Do EP will drop on June 25th courtesy of Spoilsport Records.

Nightwatchers Deliver New Single

A couple of years ago I came across the French punk band Nightwatchers and immediately submerged myself in their music. Their killer debut LP from 2019, La paix ou le sable, is still in heavy rotation on the turntable at home. Well the gents are coming back this year and kicking things off with this raucous new single called “1905 & The Muslim Exception”. It brings that some sort of raw, explosive energy we heard from the debut and builds on the sound with a more mature and slick approach to songwriting and production. If you don’t know about the band, you need to get informed.

Nightwatchers will release this single as part of a new album entitled Common Crusades due out this fall on Lovely Records.
