Have To Share This New Wye Oak

I am not sure what happened to my close relationship with Baltimore’s finest Wye Oak over the last few years, but I honestly didn’t spend a lot of time with their last two releases. Maybe it was the more electronic sound of 2015’s Shriek that threw me for a loop after many years of die hard fandom from their stunning debut If Children to the absolutely perfect 2011 release Civilian. For whatever reason I dismissed the band for a few years, I am notwback in full force with this new single “Fortune”. It’s a total stunner of a track with super heavy bass and guitar which harkens back to releases like the My Neighbor/My Creator EP from 2010. Simply put, I cannot get enough of this song today. Play, repeat.

Nostalgic Pop from Black Beach Baby

Sweden’s Black Beach Baby only have a handful of releases to their name, but I’m hoping the nostalgic sound catches some of your ears. I think the guitars might be a slight bit soft in their presentation, which initially has that jangling pop turn that keeps your coming back for repeated spins. But, in the end, the dream quality of the vocals allows for listeners to latch onto a different emotional sentiment, ultimately keeping you around for even longer. This works in the band’s favor, as they unleash a marvelous chorus that definitely had me hoping I’d hear more real soon. Time will tell, so let’s just enjoy this ditty, shall we?

Monad Shares A Bright-Synthy Track

Monad is the moniker for producer/artist Eshchar Nachmany who hails from Tel Aviv and has a new single from his upcoming sophomore EP. “Low Pressure” is a sonic delight, combining edgy synth combinations with hazy psychedelic guitars. It begins a bit slowly and subtly, with waves of synth washing over the mix with Nachmany’s crisp vocals before the percussion kicks in. The result is warming–the various aspects of the tune guide you through until your nodding your head in delight. Take a listen below and look out for more from Monad.

Get In The Holiday Spirit With Molly Burch

We had a bit of a wintry mix last night here in Austin, and temperatures dropped below freezing, so while we’re not even past Thanksgiving yet, I feel a bit in the holiday mood. Molly Burch released a cover of George Michael’s “Last Christmas” a little ways back, and released a silly recording studio video alongside it. While this cover doesn’t offer much of a change from the original, Burch’s classic vocals do it justice and add a bit of color to the Christmas banger. Bright Pop from Pynch

London outfit Pynch just popped up on my radar, thanks to Speedy Wunderground; the popular label will be releasing the band’s newest single as part of their on-going Single Series in December. I immediately loved the way the guitar sort of jittered its way right into the tune, dancing atop the steady rhythm section. Then the vocals entered the picture, sort of carrying this natural sense of wonderment; the voice just seems to sort of evaporate into the ether as each line’s delivered, matched by some spacey keyboard notes. It’s just one of those pop tunes that ultimately leaves you begging to hear it again and again. Float off into the world with this tune, and grab it HERE.

Withered Hand Announces Ten Years EP

Admittedly, Withered Hand wasn’t on my radar until Slumberland Records helped released New Gods; I then, of course, went back to pick up Good News, his first album. Where is this going, you ask? Well, four songs off of Good News have been re-recorded with accompanying strings, and it seems fitting that we share those, if and only to share our affinity for Dan Wilson’s craft…not to mention the great labels that are sharing in this release, WIAIWYA and Fika Recordings. The below song is a great example of the emotional pull that can be added via string accompaniment, and man, throwing that in with a Wilson penned tune is likely to make me cry. Except I can’t because it’s cold here, like my heart. The Ten Years EP is officially out on December 20th.

Say Hello To Annie DiRusso

It’s a cold ass day here in Austin and we are all in need of some rocking music to get the blood flowing. Today we look no further than the young, Nashville upstart Annie DiRusso and her latest single “Dead Dogs”. Obviously the tune falls into the vein of some solid lady rockers like Lucy Daucus or Courtney Barnett, but with a bit more force and power behind her words and music. DiRusso is sure to be a name you’ll be hearing more from very soon.

Cosmic Chaos Share Average Legs + Show Tonight at Cheer Ups!

Austin’s Cosmic Chaos have been making quite a name for themselves since the release of their Ca’os EP back in 2018. While they’re clearly cut from the same cloth as many other psychedelic acts in town, they’re flexing some musicianship that definitely elevates the band. Take their brand new single here, and while you can hear that swirl of garage emotions, the song’s latter half gets pumped up with this huge saxophone solo…which is not an uncommon inclusion in the band’s sound. I’m also really drawn to Laura Mendoza’s voice; it has this youthful exuberance, whilst still seeming like she’s challenging the world and the status quo. The band celebrate the release of their brand new single over at Cheer Ups this evening with The Boleys and Geranium Drive. If you’re not there, then look for the band’s new LP in the early 2020.

Fuzzy Pop from Double Date with Death

This year I’ve been turned onto French label Howlin Banana Records, and it looks like they’ve scored another solid act with Quebec’sDouble Date with Death. Sure, the game’s a bit of a mouthful over here, but the song has this perfect blend of sharp garage rock notes, hidden beneath this fuzzy outer coat. The vocals aren’t omnipresent, but when they ride in, they carry this sort of dreamy vibe throughout, bouncing along with some late coos coasting towards the song’s finish. Looks like this track will appear on the band’s new effort, L’au Dela, which is slated for release in January of 2020.

Vern Matz Share Rabbit God

We’ve covered Vern Matz before, and I think going forward, we’re all likely to hear more about the band, especially based on the quality of their latest single. Those fans of recent indie guitar pop nods will surely appreciate the guitar sounds going on throughout this number; they’re really crisp and recall the happy meandering of acts like Real Estate. For me, however, the winner is in the yearning quality of the vocal delivery; it sort of feels like I’m dreaming of the world right along with the vocals. If I’m going off my gut, I think the band have something special here, but we’ll have to wait until their debut album comes in February to really have a full understanding of their talent.
