Pink Chameleons Offer Up Melting Face

Finnish outfit Pink Chameleons have quite a unique sound; they claim to have an affinity for garage and psychedelia, not to mention their love for Waylon Jennings, so you can see where things get a little bit muddy. Here, they definitely have a middle section of garage swagger beneath this heavy psychedelia…but what hooked me, and it’s looped in twice in the track, is this playful balance between male and female vocals in the chorus. It seemingly works against the driving pulse of the music beneath the surface, sort of raising the song’s spirituality before the effortless swagger of the verse comes into play; I like a good juxtaposition, in any form. This tune will appear on the group’s new EP, which is slated for release later this Fall via Soliti Music.

Genuine Leather Share Three Chord Song

Austin act Genuine Leather always seem to have something up their sleeve, and this week’s no difference as they’ve just shared a brand new track from their forthcoming EP. At the moment, the band seems super-intent upon just rocking anthemic pop songs. I can hear little hints of Elvis Costello curl in the vocals delivered, while also hearing a nod to power-pop heroes across the board. It’s infectious and hits hard, especially if you’re willing to let your speakers hit full blast. You’ve got appreciate the band’s push to craft a pop song within the confines of 3 chords…and pull it off no less. Their EP is slated for release later this year, but you can catch the band at Mohawk tomorrow night (9/21) with Blood, Nick Adamo, Reen & the Renegades.

More From Matthew Squires

Hey now I think we’ve made it abundantly clear we are big fans of our local ATX friend Matthew Squires and the music he creates. He’s always had a knack for being a just a tad left of center in the Austin indie scene while also churning out some absolutely beautiful songs over the years. As he prepares for the release of his new album Visions of America, Squires recently dropped the lead track for streaming enjoyment. This guy seriously continues to evolve into one of the most important songwriters in our city.

Visions of America will drop on August 30th.

New Music from 3108

3108 has a decent resume with some powerhouse labels like Jigsaw Records or Trouble in Mind, but at the moment it seems that Kyle Hill is out on his own, so he’s offering up a few samples of the next LP he hopes to drop. Right away there’s this infectious fuzz with this twinkling pop vibe working behind it; it sort of feels like twirling with the snow falling happily upon your face. I love the late keyboard solo in the song’s latter half, providing this playfulness that gives the song an added vitality that’s often overlooked. There’s a couple of more tunes HERE if your’e so inclined.

Fun Track From The Beekeepers

It’s Monday morning and Nathan and I are bummed out to be fully back to work starting tomorrow. As bummed as we may be, we can always try to bolster our moods with some fun, energetic, easy to get into music. Imagine that, my new friends in Portland, New York based The Beekeepers just sent over this new song called “Endless Spiral Notebooks”. It’s a fun, yet simple song full of swirling organs and an overall DIY approach to songwriting. It’s a fresh track for a Monday morning. Enjoy.

Sorry I Missed This: Sasha and the Valentines

Even in our own backyard, things slide by, which probably isn’t aided by me choosing to stay home more often and kick it with my rad kid…so please, I apologize for not pointing you earlier to how great Sasha and the Valentines are. I just caught them playing at our friend Maud’s birthday party, and while I knew the rest of the acts would be great, I was caught off by how entrancing this act was. Their EP, dropped at the end of May has these slightly dreamy pop tones, perfectly coated in musical atmospherics right where they need to be. One of the things I loved live, which lives in the recorded version, is the way singer Sarah holds onto monosyllabic notes; it definitely provides a hypnotic effect you might enjoy. These four songs are great, I’m sorry I missed them. But here they are now.

Dream Pop from Shikoswe

I always like to move into Mondays with something a little bit calming, something that seems to have sensation of easing into the week…so here I am with this wonderful Shikoswe track. While the first 50 seconds feel like my day, slowing moving along, there’s a nice uptick in the energy around 53 seconds that I couldn’t turn away from when listening; it added an underlying energy that crafted that dream drift we all search for…at least for fans of the genre. The chorus “it’s all the same” is a sublime slice of pop sensibility surely soothing several of you. Look for this track on the new album Back in the Tall Grass.

Local Love: New Punk From Bauwaves

Bauwaves are a new band to our local scene, featuring ex-members of Wild America and The Fall. They’ve got their debut LP coming out this fall on Salinas Records, but for now we’ve got a little slice of their rambunctious punk energy in the form of “Just For Kicks.” The high energy of cymbal crashing percussion combined with the mega distorted guitar riffs and just slightly off-kilter vocals make for a riot of a track. Excited to see what comes next from this new project on the block–keep your eye out for Bauwaves around town.

Jangle Pop From Saeyers

Saeyers is the indie pop project of Marshall Lewis– a native of Bloomington, Indiana. His music is bedroom pop, fleshed out a bit beyond the barebones that sometimes accompany that genre. “Someday” is the fourth track he’s released from his self-titled debut EP, and it’s a lush number, with Lewis’ impossibly soft vocals at the front and center, followed closely by the dueling electric and acoustic guitar parts. It’s a bright and sunny track, and there are many layers to explore, so take a listen and fall for Saeyers.
