Guidon Bear Share Magellanic Cloud

Guidon Bear is an a fairly recent project, but lets just say it’s members come with quite a resume of their own, the Olympia, Washington sort. Next week they’ll be releasing their debut LP, and this single offers us a glimpse at what is to come our way. My favorite piece about this track is that they employ the same style as many an act known for building discord, but slow it down and put it beneath some bouncing synth work, allowing for the creation of an almost-pop smash hit. Mary Water’s voice sparkles throughout; she definitely has this style that’s ever-present but slightly nostalgic; it’s really clean throughout the verses, which I dig. Downwardly Mobile: Steel Accelerator is out June 19th via Antiquated Future and Yoyo Recordings.

Another One From Fell Runner

A few months back, I was delightfully introduced to the warm indie rock of LA’s Fell Runner. They’ve put out another single from their upcoming album, Talking, which will be out quite soon. “Same Way” has that similar sort of funky sound that we heard on “Come Home,” but this number has a building energy from the start. Choppy light noises welcome you to the track before the warm vocals cover over everything in a Future Islands-ish croon. The track builds up before it breaks at a chorus, but it’s not a typical soaring indie rock chorus, instead it’s a tempered release before back to the galloping verses. A solid single, making me even more excited for Talking, which you can pre-order here — it’s out today!

New Music from Julia Rakel

You know I love Julia Rakel; I was really pushing her indie fEElz EP earlier this year. She returns today with this brand new single, a sort of hazy ode to summer time. Her production is always spot on, and the little musical accents here really help create that sort of sunny blur that only means you’re getting closer to that oasis; it’s a nice touch in the song’s latter half when she ties in a vocal counterpoint to add layered depth. It’s been a great year for Julia, and it looks like she’s going to continue that momentum going forward, so Happy Friday for that one.

Generationals Share “Breaking Your Silence”

We’ve long been fans of Generationals here at ATH, so I’m excited to share that they’re back with a new single and a new album which will be released shortly. This new track, “Breaking Your Silence” dropped a few days back, but it’s a pleasant reminder of how well Generationals can craft an indie rock tune. The very beginning of the number reminds me a touch of Foals, but soon the band stews up a simmering blend of groovy bass, slightly fuzzy percussion and barely there synths. Lingering there for the first minute or so, we calmly groove with the band before the loud synth hook and vocals peak for the catchy chorus. Take a peek at the new video below.

Reader As Detective will be out on July 19, 2019. Pre-order it here.

U.S. Highball Announce Debut LP

I really needed these songs from Glaswegian act U.S. Highball, and feel even greater knowing they come with an album announcement, meaning more is on the way. There’s just this natural joyousness to the duo’s sound; I mean, the opening “Hall of Heads” is pretty much just a play on our tastes, but quickly turns into this delighting pop tune I can’t get out of my head. “Don’t Travel Far” is a little meatier; there’s jangling guitars, textured synth/beats and a really incredible use of melody that will keep me circling back just like their guitars. Speaking of said album, it’s titled Great Record, dropping on July 12th via Lame-O Records.

Sachet Share New Single

When one ship sinks, sometimes a new ship sets sail, as is the case of Lani and Sam, who have embarked upon a new ocean voyage with Sachet…whilst their old band, Day Ravies lays at the bottom of the sea. Our first listen to the band’s new album has the group slicing up angular guitars licks like they’re going out of fashion. Lani’s vocals, however, offer this heavy dosage of pop sensibility, churning it into higher octaves to further the band’s lofty goals of hook-laden post-punk. They turn the song’s direction towards scuzzier pop methods around the 1:30 mark, only to circle back to wrap the tune up. This jam will appear on Nets, which drops in September courtesy of Tenth Court.

More From The Appleseed Cast

As most know, I was a little more than excited when I heard one of my all times The Appleseed Cast was returning this year with new music. Seriously, this is big news for me and I can assure you all that the new album will certainly not disappoint. For more of a teaser of the new material, the band has just sent along this brand new track “Chaotic Waves”. It once again shows a band evolving, growing into a more polished sound with swirling guitars and some of the best drum work I’ve heard since the Low Level Owl days.

The Appleseed Cast will release new album The Fleeting Light of Impertinence on June 28th via Graveface Records.

Stream III from Butcher the Bar

Joel Nicholson’s been working as Butcher the Bar for some time, and in that period, he’s gone from solo to full band and probably back again…but for III, we get the full band pop bombast that’s always lived within the confines of Nicholson’s songwriting. There are straight upbeat pop numbers, and some more pensive tunes here, so just stream it below. You can grab the LP directly from Bobo Integral, and if you’re so inclined, you can read my thoughts about each song below.
