ACL Preview: Rey Pila

Rey Pila

Once again ACL Festival weekend has crept ever closer and I can’t say I’m fully ready just yet.  Of course I still have a couple of weeks to prep which should be plenty of time to get my mind and body ready for another festival.  As always, we will do our best to offer some advice, spotlight some bands we like, and also interview those bands we like.  So today I’m going to begin my coverage with a short bit on my current favorite band out of Mexico, Rey Pila.  Follow the jump for more.

We’re Not Dead Yet Pt. 2

Shakey GravesAfter a recently-relocated-to-Austin coworker went to Blues on the Green was stunned by the number of people and quality of the show, I figured I would check in on the last show of the season to see what’s doing. After all, live music is dying in Austin.

Shakey Graves has been on a roll lately, playing to bigger and bigger crowds at festivals, getting booked on late night television. Fellow photographers that were at Lolla said his set was a festival highlight. The local boy, born and raised, is poised to be a big export. Blues on the Green is certainly not pigeon-holing artists to the blues anymore as they also threw Hail-Mary with Rider Against the Storm, a hip-hop collective of good musicians and two-time winners of the Austin Music Awards’ Band of the Year.

ACL Lineup Is Here!

untitledThough the lineup unofficially leaked yesterday, we were holding off to make sure everything was all official and whatnot before posting anything.  So if you haven’t seen it yet, the ACL lineup was just announced this morning for both of the festival weekends.  Of course ATH is excited about seeing The Strokes again, but as usual, we’re enjoying the undercards with groups like Kurt Vile, Waxahatchee, Talk in Tongues, Jose Gonzalez, etc.  Check out the full lineup here and form your own opinions.

You can also pick up a 3 day pass at 10am central time by following this link.  Do it.

Show Review: The War On Drugs ACL Taping 04/06

Processed with VSCOcam with c1 preset

Last year’s Lost In The Dream took The War On Drugs’ claim to fame to a whole new level, landing them atop most year end lists as well as a longtime spot in my personal listening catalogue. So naturally the folks over at ACL TV wanted to catch Adam Granduciel and company at the height of their musical career so far and get them on for a taping, which resulted in a short night of tunes mostly from that newest album. Read on for more thoughts on the night.

Show Review: Foo Fighters ACL Taping (11/20)

Photo by Scott Newton“We’re gonna keep on playing until they kick us the f**k out, so here’s a song you might know,” announced Foo Fighters lead singer/guitarist/documentarian/nicest mother**ker you’ll ever meet, Dave Grohl, before launching into “My Hero,” from the 1997 album The Colour and the Shape.  It was one of countless surreal moments from the final episode of the 40th season of Austin City Limits on Thursday night.

I Went To Three More Days Of ACL

Surviving ACL 2014On Monday, I was tired. The four days between ACL Weekends included a day of recovery, a full week’s work of the day job in three days and quite a bit of time editing photos. Then three more days of fun, jams and mud – and not necessarily in that order. But it was time for entertaining out of town guests, playing tour guide, eating the best festival food and navigating through the depths humanity with a soundtrack provided by festival bands.

ACL Interview: Rey Pila

Rey PilaI realize that ACL is completely done now and many folks have the festival in their rearview as we move on to the next thing, but I’ve got one last related piece to share with you.  Our final interview, and possibly our most interesting, comes today from new wave band Rey Pila.  The ATH crew was excited for this one because we got to practice some of our Spanish with the Brooklyn based, but Mexico born band.  Follow the jump for full interview.
