Austin Spotlight: Keep an Eye on Slow

slowerA few weeks ago I was hanging out at Hotel Vegas to catch Literature (shame you guys weren’t there); I knew most of the bands on the bill, but I hadn’t heard Slow yet.  I was really impressed, particularly with the guitar playing, which was noisy just like it…and you can hear a nice little solo in the middle of this tune.  I feel like it’s our job to keep an eye out on rad bands coming out, and I feel like it’s been kind of humdrum lately.  So, you should definitely keep an eye on this band; they’ll be playing the Fleshlights album release show over at Vegas on November 4th, but be warned, it’ll be loud.  Oh, and this tune is a demo, so don’t get all audiophile on me!

Some Local Monday Night Must See Shows

gobAlright folks…I know it’s Halloween week, so everyone is looking for things to do, and shows to attend where costumes are accepted.  Tonight, Monday, you’ve got one option, plus another show that should be on your radar.  Hotel Vegas has a mellow show on the bill, which might be in contrast to what you’ve know from the venue, but don’t miss some of these acts, namely RF Shannon and Plantation; Plantation is the project of Carlton, who is also part of our boys Grape St. But, if you’re inclined to show off that costume you’ve been working on, you should head over to the Goblin-A-Go-Go at Mohawk this evening. That event is free and starts at 8 PM, featuring A Giant Dog, pumpkin carving, and contests and drawing galore.

Show Preview: Screaming Females @ Red 7 (Tonight)

screamingfemalesIt should be no surprise to anyone that we recommend this show to you, as every band that’s gracing the stage tonight has graced our pages on more than one occasion.  Screaming Females are the headliner on the evening, and Marissa Paternoster is probably one of the strongest women in rock n’ roll.  Her voice, her performance, it all comes from a tiny little body, and it’ll blow yo away.  PUJOL deserves some love too, bringing his garage rock stylings with a ferocity and catchiness all his own.  But, just because two huge traveling acts are bringing some noise, doesn’t mean Austin can’t hold its own.  The openers Crooked Bangs and the Midgetmen are two long-standing ATH faves, so please show up early to support our friends.  Tickets will cost you $14 at the door, which opens at 9 PM.

ATH Records Go Big with Shivery Shakes New Single

Shivery ShakesOk okay, I know last week was really heavy with all my talk of Shivery Shakes and their new LP.  This is the last time I bring the band up, at least for the next few days.  Consequence of Sound had the privilege of premiering the band’s latest single, “Swimming,” on Friday.  If you’ve caught the band live, this is one of my favorite tracks the band performs, as Marcus takes over vocal duties from behind the drum kit.  It’s just another great tune on the bands debut, Three Waves and a Shake, which you’ll be able to get from us at Austin Town Hall Records or our friend Punctum Records.  I promise; I won’t post about them for two days.

Austin Spotlight: New Single from Young Tongue

YoungTonguePicIt’s been a really rad week for Austin music, whether you like the heavier side such as Flesh Lights or the poppier side of indie rock, such as this new tune from Young Tongue. Me? I fucking like both, so deal with it. I’m particularly fond of this new track, especially the way that band’s two vocalists work together to provide a rich tapestry of melody that stands in contrast to the darker work of the instrumentation that’s present, particularly the post rock guitar chords.  They’re heading out rather soon on a big little tour through the Midwest, then turning left. It’s all part of the celebratory for their debut, Death Rattle, which comes out on November 11th via Raw Paw/Punctum Records.

Austin Spotlight: Tamarron Get a Little Far Out

tammyRayRay first introduced us to Austin’s Tamarron back in early 2013.  At the time, I dug it, though I will admit that it was standard fare good indie rock, nothing spectacular, though nothing poor.  But, with their recently released Moon Wavves EP, the group seems to really be crafting their own sound, broadening their horizons and furthering sonic dimensions.  They continue to add little doses of texture here and there that completely move their sound in a more psychedelic pop direction; they add all these nice little flourishes that really flesh out their sound.  You can grab the new EP for NYOP, so I suggest you get to it.

Show Preview: Perfume Genius @ the Parish (10.14)

Perfume-Genius-001

Date Tuesday, October 14th
Location The Parish
Doors 7:00 PM
Tickets $15 from the Parish

I know every one is milling about trying to get their hands on those Widespread Panic tickets, but if you didn’t luck out there, you’ve got a better option waiting in the wings.  Perfume Genius will be bringing his intimate sounds to the perfect setting: the Parish stage.  Now, while his early work was quite solemn and based around piano ballads, his newest album, Too Bright, offers a broader spectrum of sounds.  There’s still this brilliantly personal approach to the songwriting, but the sound has blossomed into a huge pop opus.  Those not in attendance will regret their choice, as this will clearly be the rage at the office water cooler on Wednesday morning. Matteah Baim will be opening the evening up.
