Austin Spotlight: Harvest Thieves Ready 7″

harvestthievesIf you’ve been keeping track of the Americana music scene in Austin the last few years you’ve surely heard of Harvest Thieves.  If you haven’t, then now’s your chance to join us as we prepare for the release of the band’s upcoming split 7″ with Sam Cassidy.  On the local act’s side, you get this sensible piece of rock n’ roll wearing hints of country heritage on the sleeve; there’s a nice bit of piano working in the background too, helping fill out the sound.  If, like us, you’re enjoying what you hear, then you should check out the group’s release show on June 5th over at Holy Mountain.  They’ll be joined by other great local acts such as A. Sinclair and Lowin.

Austin Spotlight: A. Sinclair Premiere New Single

asinclairThe time is near folks. In fact, in less than 24 hours you’ll be able to get your hands on the brand new Pretty Girls EP from Austin’s A. Sinclair.  We’ve been writing quite a bit about the group lately, as we’re really excited to see the increased output from the band, not to mention their growing maturity in songwriting.  Today we bring you a brand new song, “Throwing Up on the Ground,” which features more twang than the previous two singles the band have released.  It demonstrates the careful balance between the band’s influences and their ability to rock live.   And, speaking of rocking, the band will be doing just that, live at the Mohawk this Thursday, celebrating the release of the brand new EP; they’ll be joined by Otis and the Destroyer, Chasca, and the Docs.

Austin Spotlight: Walker Lukens Remix Premiere

Walker-Lukens-1After an excellent year with the release of his album, Devoted, Walker Lukens has decided to up the ante by releasing a six song Devoted Remixed EP.  It’s going to be a short little stop-gap in his writing process, offering up remix versions of 6 album tracks, revised, so to speak.  Our premiere brings you “Lover (Two Dudes in Love Remix),” which demonstrates the care and detail on the tracks within the EP; it’s a much sparser version of the original, leaving lots of empty space for beats and loops to move within.  The remix, as the title indicates, was completed by San Francisco production team of Two Dudes In Love. He’ll be offering up the EP on May 27th, with a special release show on May 31st at Stubbs; the show will also feature locals Ruby Jane and Hello Wheels.  Take your time with this tune, and if you’ve got it, go back and visit Devoted…then thank us later.

Show Preview: The Migrant Kids @ Mohawk (5.12)

migrant

Date Monday, May 12th
Location Mohawk
Doors 9:00 PM
Tickets $6 at the Door

We’ve written about Austin’s Migrant Kids many a post, so we don’t really need to harp on the act much more, other than you’ll miss out on their set if you don’t stay through the night.  But, what caught my eye on the line-up was BE Godfrey‘s EP release.  I posted about one of his new tracks last week, and it’s definitely something that warrants your listening, both at the Mohawk, and at home.  Where else could you pick it up but from the artist himself? They’ll also be joined by Austin’s Silver Ships opening the night up, so you’ve got a great set of mellow jams to enjoy all night long..perfect way to slide into the work week.

Austin Spotlight: Another OBN IIIs Single

obnThis song probably no longer needs an introduction from us.  If you’ve been reading our site you know we’ve got nothing but praise for local act, OBN IIIs.  Long has the band blown us away with their live shows, but the work on their newest album, Third Time to Harm, should illustrate to everyone that the group is more than just a hot live act; they’ve got killer songs to boot (we’ve known that for a long time).  I think this song captures the rock appeal while still showing a penchant for lyrics that you’ll want to scream while you’re jumping up and down at their shows. Pick up their new record on May 27th via Tic Tac Totally.

Austin Spotlight: More New Music From A. Sinclair

FrankSmith_1A. Sinclair is on a roll here with the latest single from the Pretty Girls EP.  This track opens up with a similar riff to that of English Beat‘s “Mirror in the Bathroom,” but the song gets a little more discordant as it pushes along.  It’s representative of a new attitude, now that the group has tossed aside the Frank Smith name; it also embodies the forceful attitude that the band have brought  to their live sets lately.  Don’t think they’ve thrown away their knack for a touch of pop, with “Suit Up” slowing for a brief moment just before the 1 minute mark.  Their new EP hits on May 20th, followed by a release show on May 22nd at Mohawk.

Ticket Giveaway: Kishi Bashi @ Mohawk (5.9)

KBashi1Personally, this is the steal of the week.  Kishi Bashi is renown for his incredible performances, not to mention the moving music he’s created, so why not take a chance to grab yourself a pair of free tickets from us and our friends at Transmission.  Kishi is known for looping his voice, his violin and beats, a la Andrew Bird, but I have a feeling that he’ll bring a friend or two to the stage.  If you’ve been hiding in a hole, then I suggest you go back and listen to 151a, or steam his up-coming release, Lighght, over at NPR. This is guaranteed to be one of those shows your friends will talk about for years, so be sure to show up.  And get there early to catch Plume Giant. You can assure yourself tickets HERE, or you can leave a comment with Your Favorite Local Eatery; I’ll pick the winner who I agree with the most (I’m in fat kid mode today, FYI).

Contest closes at 12 PM CST on Thursday, May 8th.
