This is fine.
There are just some bands that you’re going to fawn over, so I’m always glad when I get a chance to see Terry Malts. It didn’t hurt that they had some great local acts supporting them before their set, which made for an all-around enjoyable night for us. Staying up late on a school night, well worth it.

When I first started talking about this show, RayRay was giving me a hard time because he thought Aimee Mann was just typical chick rock; homeboy is wrong. For one, she’s worked with artists from Geddy Lee to Matthew Sweet, not to mention her role in the Independent Music Awards. And, accompanying her on the evening will be my man-crush, Ted Leo, who has a very valid history of his own. I’m not sure how the night will work, as I know the two have been playing joint sets as The Both, but perhaps we’ll get a little bit of both on the evening. Sure, prices are a tad steep, but have a feeling it will be a sepcial evening for all in attendance.

I’m going to beg you to come to this show. I absolutely love the Terry Malts and their no bullshit live shows. They’ve come through town before, but their return to Austin comes on the heels of their latest release, Nobody Realizes This is Nowhere (Slumberland Records). It’s just another excellent record that deserves a huge audience, so be part of that on Thursday night. If you play your cards right, you’ll also be treated to excellent sets by locals New Arrows and Shivery Shakes (who just finished recording their own LP!) Great bands deserve great audiences so they can put on great shows…come be part of it.

I didn’t really know what to expect on the evening of the Dent May show. There were tons of great bands playing, both local and traveling, so I wondered if people would turn out for Dent; turn out they did, buoyed by travelers from Ole Miss…leaving him with a home away from home show.

After spending several weeks listening to Pain is Beauty by Chelsea Wolfe, I was really anticipating an incredible show on Friday. Her voice and her continual growth led to a rather full crowd of eager lookie-loos yearning to hear her dark take on pop music. She was joined by Dallas act True Widow who aimed to set off the night in the right way.

Here’s a new piece of catchy rock n’ roll that just made it into our mailbox today: Berkshire Hounds. I can definitely see how they’ve got a rhythmic groove to the work their crafting, backed with crunchy guitar sounds that erupt in line with the vocals. Why does this song standout to my ears? It’s the usage of the saxophone, adding an element to this blend of indie rock that we’re not typically used to hearing. The group’s still in the early phases of their existence, but you this single should hold you over until the band release their next full-length later on this fall.
I think one of the most disappointing moment in recent Austin music history was the disbanding of Voxtrot. Sure, members have gone on to work on various things, and other bands like Literature and She Sir stepped in to fill the void, yet nothing quite seems the same. Classic twee pop sounds with bounce to make your feet shuffle and guitar licks to bring a smile to your face epitomized the great act. I had recovered for quite some time until the following track below came on my shuffle last night; it brought back the sadness all over again. At an early age, the group was able to release this track on the excellent Raised By Wolves EP, and they never let me down afterwards…that is until they walked away. I think we should all sit back and just enjoy this sweet tune.

After the excellent release of It’s Up to Emma, Scout Niblett‘s show at the Mohawk on Tuesday evening is going to be something really special. The album received tons of praise from the heavy-hitters, demonstrating that Scout’s had a great return to form. You’d be remiss if you completely ignored the songtress as she rolls into town this week. You can listen to her cover of “No Scrubs” below, just to sample her voice and style. Also joining the show will be Some Say Leland and The Cocker Spaniels. Cheap price, great bands and Mohawk pretty much make it a three for three hit!

For those who’ve been following Red Hunter over the last few years, I hope you’ve noticed that he’s now working full-time with a band, known from here on out as Gender Infinity. The group has just put up the 9 Lives EP, which you can buy digitally or get a hand-drawn CD. I chose this track from the collection because I think it illustrates the magic of fleshing things out into full band sound. The interplay between male/female vocals is heartfelt, rather than applied for kitsch and modernity. Listen and be warmed.
