Austin’s Marry Cherry Share New Video

Austin’s got a history of some read psychedelic sounds, from the 13th Floor Elevators to the Black Angels, and it looks like Marry Cherry are aiming to take back into the darkness from whence it came. Their latest single is this heavy video of live footage, edited by Andy Ray Lemon with some crazy visuals to melt your brain. Their sound is definitely on the heavier side of the genre, playing more with these horror riffs that tower over you as the vocals take on that cavernous howl from beneath the foggy mixture. This is the band’s debut single, so be on the lookout as their sure to be making waves with this brand of noisy psych.

Chronophage Share Black Clouds

One of the reasons the Austin music scene can be so frustrating is the fact that Chronophage aren’t one of the most talked about acts around. Just recently they uploaded the stunning “Black Clouds” with an announcement of their new self-titled LP, and I should have rushed to share. In the opening minutes, you feel as if the band have matured, sonically, coming off arty, but still headstrong…then, as the minute mark crosses the song begins to get a bit of a growl in the vocals; the song continues to grow, emphatically pushing itself into leaving you with the best song Paul Westerberg never wrote. This band should be your life. Chronophage is out on June 3rd via Post Present Medium/Bruit Direct.

A Sinclair Shares We Got Time

Our old pal A. Sinclair has been on this site more or less since we began over a decade ago, albeit in various different names. Still, I feel like the last few years he’s really hitting his stride with his songwriting, perhaps hitting a huge peak with this new track. Built upon a piano backbone, Aaron stretches his notes perfectly; the production makes it seem like he’s striking a fragile figure out somewhere on some Texas highway. Each chorus gets a little volume push, highlighting the bend of the guitar and the internal melody, meeting up with a nice little stomp from the percussion section. It all crashes in just after the 2 minute mark, before retreating back the verse/chorus. Track out now courtesy of Mr. Pink Records.

New Jams from the Austin Scene

Feel like I neglected Austin last week, so wanted to make up for it by sharing a couple of the tunes that’ve been chilling for the last two weeks; we’ve got new tunes from Queen Serene and Gentleman Rogues.

Queen Serene began as Sarah Ronan’s new bedroom project, but as you can tell by the darkened post-punk sounds here, things have been fleshed out into a full on rock n’ roll hotbed. Love the way this tune goes back and forth between sort of slinky early 80s sounds and a driving guitar exploration that recalls acts like Television.

Gentleman Rogues have just teamed up with Snappy Little Numbers, and dammit if they didn’t go and try to one-up their label by creating the snappiest little pop rock tune. The track hits with a heavy mix that puts the guitars right up front. Perfect for all you pop rock fans, the new 7″ drops on April 1st.

SXSW Interviews: Good Looks

SXSW is under way, with music pretty much in full swing now. But, we’ve got last interview to drop in your laps from our friends in Good Looks. We’ve covered several of the group’s singles from their forthcoming LP, Bummer Year, but here’s a closer look at the group, with a jam linked with our approval. Check out their SXSW dates after the interview!

Good Looks Drop Bummer Year

Austin’s Good Looks will be releasing their debut album Bummer Year on April 8th, which surprisingly is only a month away. And today, the band shares the record’s title track, bringing out the best in Tyler Jordan’s songwriting. When it opens, I love the space the song takes, like a dark Texas night, with guitar lines sparkling like distant lights against the skyline. But, that leaves so much space in the lyrical delivery, and Jordan blows it out of the water, like old school folk troubadour; his voice sounds lonesome, like you’d expect from the song/album’s title, but it’s a fascinating performance nonetheless. Bummer Year drops via Keeled Scales.

SXSW Interviews: Sinead O’Brien

Well it is nearly time people, we have but one week left before things get a little nuts here in Austin and SXSW gets underway. Make sure you’ve stocked your fridge with the essentials and finalized any travel plans if you are visiting us from out of town. It will be a crazy week and you don’t want to lose time by not being prepared. With one week to go, we still have a few of our SXSW interviews to share with you all. Today I am pleased to share this one with Irish artist Sinead O’Brien. Hit the jump for full interview.

Wiretree Share Inside

While Kevin Peroni’s been busy working on writing for film and television, he’s still found a fair amount of time to work on his own project, Wiretree. Today, in celebration of Bandcamp Friday, he’s dropped a brand new single, the first new tune we’ve heard since 2020. Working through the melodies in this track, it’s clear that Kevin would fit right alongside other artists like James Mercer or Jason Lytle; I can definitely hear Grandaddy in the way the songs sonic textures intermingle, with loops and beats swimming around the guitar notes. Feel like good old fashioned indie rock, of the pop leaning sort? Well, now’s your chance to try Austin’s Wiretree!

Friday Boys Drop I’m Skinny Single

It’s a bummer that Beerland doesn’t exist anymore, as this new Friday Boys single seems like the perfect tune to cram into the old club’s walls. The song has this anxious pounding, crafting this suffocating heaviness; this atmosphere sets up the slight (and I mean slight) melodic twist in the chorus here, allowing for the perfect contrast. Going through the tune, it hints at the sort of discordant almost-punk offered up by the likes of Protomartyr, with Scott’s guitar skittering at the edges, so you’re likely going to find folks clamoring to catch the act; they play tonight in Austin at the Swan Dive!

Bright Light Social Hour Reimagine I Me Mine

I don’t usually rock a cover song, unless, like Austinites Bright Light Social Hour, the song totally reimagines things; below you can hear the group mixing up the Beatles “I Me Mine.” They take the song from its original vibe, and spin it into this funked-up dancefloor ready bouncer; the bass line just bobs and weaves, waving at you with that come hither finger to drag you onto that checkered square of vinyl. This tune fills in a gap in the band’s recording process while they flesh out their fifth studio album; they also have a slew of dates throughout Austin during SXSW, so if you’re around, get into the groove, just like this great cover!
