Indigo Bunting Drop Brand New Album

We were really happy that Indigo Bunting jumped on the Austin music scene, rising from the ashes of our faves Tiger Waves. Over the weekend, they quietly dropped their first L,P Clip Show, and boy are you in for a surprise. Opening track “Circus Circus” sounds just like the title, a collage of pop moments layered atop each other in an organized fashion. The whole album has the group at their most playful, and yet the most contemplative; take a listen to “Celia” for a perfect example on that note. You also won’t want to miss the standout tune, “Solitaire,” which might be one of my favorite tracks to come out of Austin this year! It sounds like Animal Collective just hung out with the Flaming Lips getting weird while listening to Coma Cinema…so you know I think it’s a win.

Moving Panoramas Ready New LP

We’ve long been supporters of Leslie Sisson’s outfit, Moving Panoramas, and we might be even more impressed by the group’s newest single. It starts with this krautrock cum psychedelic guitar and keyboard line, pushing the pace from the get-go before we even get a hint of the vocals; it’s a fairly primal power, which works in contrast to Sisson’s voice. And what a performance by Leslie here. She carries this pristine sparkle to notes that dreamily soar over the top of the musical mix, aided by some warm “aahs” to flesh out the vibe. It’s one of those rare tracks that balances the walk between heavy and saccharine; you’ll find this track on the band’s next LP, In Two, dropping in February via Modern Outsider.

Thanks Light Share New Video

Earlier this year Thanks Light released the pleasantly surprising Terrifire. But, the progress and praise led songwriter Zane to revisit the band’s previous release, Hallelujah Amen; he had unfinished business with “Little Pink Fluffy Clouds.” He’d been working on a stop-animation video, but knowingly put it aside due to the sheer magnitude of work involved in the process…and he’s finally ready to share the final product with us. I love how the video utilizes Light Bright, one of my favorite childhood toys; it definitely incorporates the playfulness to this wonderful pop opus. ATX News with Linen Closet and Jana Horn

I reckon as an Austin-based site, we’ve got to rep our fabulous locals (but only the fabulous ones). Yesterday a couple of our favorite acts shared some things, and I’d like to share them with you.

Linen Closet dropped the latest single from their forthcoming LP, which will drop this week, with a celebratory show at Central Presbyterian with our friends David Israel and Marmalakes. If you’re looking for well-crafted indie rock, of the orchestrated sort, then this is the place to be.

Also, Jana Horn had a couple of releases, uploading her recent tour tape, as well as adding to a few of the tidbits from her forthcoming Optimism LP. She’s got three tunes up, but this is perhaps my favorite. I love how her voice comes in soft, but there’s a sharp twist when her voice grabs pace (like at the 35 second mark). Can’t wait to hear the entirety of the new LP.

Premiere: New Calvin Locklear Joint

Our local Austin amigo Calvin Locklear just released a new EP and he’s been kind enough to let us premiere a new single from the release. “Hottest Hell” is the featured single from the EP and it’s a solid piece of driving rock music with just enough pop elements to warrant it for repeat plays. If you’re digging it, Locklear also has his entire new EP Hottest Hell streaming on all platforms. As if you needed more reasons to love the Austin music scene, welp here ya go.

 

Listen to More Single Lash

There are several really great albums that came out of Austin this year, but one rising near the top (in my eyes) is this new Single Lash. The band just dropped another tune, and it’s one of the more remarkable numbers we’ve heard from the group. Opening with a distorted guitar coming in bursts, stripped away to reveal Nic’s voice, then back in again. The wall of hazy distortion eventually becomes omnipresent, serving as the white noise on which Nadeau paints his voice. There’s a subtlety to the chorus in this number too, an effortless venture floating and disappearing beneath the atmosphere of the track. Then the band sticks around to texture the back half of the track with haunting musicianship.Providence comes out on October 26th via Holodeck.

ATH & ACL 2018: A Weekend One Recap

As you likely know, many of your faithful ATH crew members ventured out this weekend to take part in this thing called Austin City Limits Festival. Have you heard of it? It’s kind of a big deal. As always, the festival was run smooth like a baby’s bottom and a good time was had by all. Part of what we do to earn our keep is to offer opinions on the music side of things and overall thoughts/concerns from the weekend. Each member of the team who attended this weekend will share their own opinions.

Brand New Fanclub Music

If you’re not into Fanclub yet, well, let me advise you. You’re going to want to be into Fanclub. The fairly new trio has just recently been popping up in the ATX scene with some lineage to our faves Letting Up Despite Great Faults. The band offers a similar note, though Leslie’s voice gives the band a slightly dreamier quality, driving home the infectiousness of their work. It’s pick up your feet and dance around the room indiepop, and there’s no ifs ands or buts, you SHOULD be listening to Fanclub. No word on official releases as of yet, but rest assured, we’re super excited to hear new tunes!

Borzoi Drop Frantic New Single

Some songs come across the old Interwebs and you’re just drawn to them. The latest from Borzoi is one such tune (not that I haven’t enjoyed the others); I love how the song just seems so jittery and out of control…and yet it’s not. It’s controlled chaos, thrown out into the world with indifference; I just get the feeling of running around in a circle whilst the band seemingly increase the pace, driving me into a spastic frenzy…such feelings that only occur with the best of rock n’ roll. I love the call and response after the 2 minute mark, bringing the tune to an emphatic close. A Prayer for War is out tomorrow via 12XU, and it’s going to be brilliant.

Will Courtney Shares Take You Away

Tomorrow you’ll be able to get your hands on Crazy Love, the latest batch of song’s from Austin’s Will Courtney. On his final single before the release, he had me with the opening piano prelude…it doesn’t take too much. Then the track settles in with Will’s voice carrying a light bit of scratchiness, like a cooler Tom Petty…that is until he reaches the chorus. He stretches himself, reaching for higher vocal notes, which in my mind recalls the best of the Americana genre, especially when its accompanied by the layered musicianship behind it. You can tell with every note he hits, and every layered bit of instrumentation that Courtney’s fine-tuned all those bits of promise he’s shared with us over the years. Crazy Love will drop Friday via Super Secret Records.
