New Tunes from Yellow Ostrich

One of the records that I thought a lot of people overlooked was The Mistress by Yellow Ostrich, which was later deservedly reissued.  Finally, the band returns with Strange Land, which will hit stores on March 6th via Barsuk.  This first new glimpse finds the band confident as ever, offering up a nice piece of indie rock with crashing cymbals and clever bits of guitar chords swirling about.  It harkens back to a more straight-forward approach to songwriting, free of gimmicks for the most part, instead focusing on lyrical content that requires a great deal of your attention.  It’s always a pleasure to see this sort of music resurface in the greater landscape; don’t you agree?

Amazing New Gem from Nada Surf

While a great many of us probably think of Nada Surf as the band that wrote “Popular,” there’s a great history of the band who’ve put out effortless pop albums that never let you down.  Personally, I adore their record Let Go, but I’ve always played out every release they’ve offered.  Now, the band returns with The Stars are Indifferent to Astronomy, which comes out January 24th via Barsuk.  One of the special things about the following track is the way the song quietly erupts after seemingly coming to slow halt, demonstrating that the band still has complete control of their pop genius.  If you’ve ignored the group, do yourself a favor and revisit their catalog, but only after you listen to this great little number.

New Music From David Bazan

We here at ATH love us some David Bazan so we tend to pay attention when the man drops new music our way.  This new track called “Wolves at the Door” is the opening number to Bazan’s latest album Strange Negotiations due out May 24th on Barsuk.  It really is a great pop song that highlights one of the most underrated songwriters in the indie game.  The guy’s good.

New Music From Ra Ra Riot

A long time favorite of the ATH kids, Ra Ra Riot, are finally planning a followup to their surprising debut LP from 2008.  Below you’ll find the first taste of new material from the band in a couple years in the form of new song “Boy”.  I can’t really say I’m feeling this new tune just yet, but maybe it’ll grow on me.  Ra Ra Riot’s upcoming LP The Orchard hits stores on August 24th via Barsuk Records.

New Music From David Bazan

davidbazan_faceDavid Bazan, the man who sometimes calls himself Pedro the Lion, is about to drop his first full length album under his own name.  The album will be called Curse Your Branches and will be hitting stores September 1st via Barsuk Records.  Here’s the very first single from the new album called “Bless This Mess”.  We likes it.

Austin A2W: Wooden Birds

thewoodenbirdswooden_birds_02_lowresSeeing as how we haven’t run one of our Austin Artist to Watch features in quite a while, we thought we’d kick things off again with obvious A2W choice Wooden Birds.  This new Austin band has been getting a ton of local and national press coverage as of late, mostly for their mellow take on indie folk rock, and partly because the band is fronted by local music legend Andrew Kinney (American Analog Set).  After 6 long years in Brooklyn, Mr. Kinney moved back to Austin recently and decided it was just about time for a new music project.  We had the good fortune to speak to the man behind Wooden Birds and ask him some of those burning questions about his relocation and his music.  Follow the jump for full interview with Andrew Kinney.
