Show Review: Divine Fits @ Beerland (8/1)

Supergroup? I guess to many of us, Divine Fits would qualify.

Dan Boeckner of Wolf Parade/Handsome Furs, Sam Brown of New Bomb Turks and that one guy in Spoon. To get things going after holing up and recording the pending A Thing Called Divine Fits due 8/28, the band decided to do a home town tour hitting Austin, Montreal and Columbus. Austin got to be first, a sneaky show a Continental Club preceded this one. But this was the first night they officially played a show.

Beerland got to host, The Young got to open.

Announcing Bloody Knives Beerland Residency

We’ve got to get out and support local Austin bands people.  I know, we all live here and love the music, and go to our fair amount of shows, but I feel like the attendees for great Austin acts have dwindled in recent years–unfortunately. Well, now’s your chance to rectify that, and get out to Beerland this Thursday to support the July residency of Bloody Knives.  They may not be the most well known band…yet, but their live shows are phenomenal, and the music just as good (if not better).  It’s time for us to back up our talk and get out to more local shows, so you know we’ll be here.  If you can’t make it this Thursday, it’s sort of okay, because you can plan ahead and make it to next weeks show, again, at Beerland.

Show Pics: Best of Day Parties @ SxSW 2012

SxSW 2012 will not go away. It refuses to be ignored. It boils rabbits (that is a movie reference before anyone gets mad at SxSW).

I have a mess of pics from the day parties. This is a hot mess. I am still doing forensics on who and where based on when. I have a rough idea of where I was, but add in an occasional adult beverage, the fact that these were taken five days into my SxSW and I have a lousy memory, you can understand if the details evade. Regardless, these are some my favorite shutter clicks from the unofficial that has become official.

From MWTX to The Fader Fort presented by Converse (professional obligation there, you can thank Converse for saving Fader Fort), I got all kinds of bands performing in daylight. Yech, daylight…

ATH Show Picks: Funx3 Fest Nites

The Fun Fun Fun Fest powers that be announced recently that all after shows this year would be completely free for anyone holding a festival wristband.  You can agree or disagree with me if you like, but that’s just about one of the most bad ass ideas I’ve ever heard.  Leave it to the Transmission guys to continually outdo themselves year after year… So now that the festival is officially here, let us take a closer look at these Fun Fest Nites and give you a nightly recommendation on where we think you should be.  Obviously these are just our picks and not intended as a fully detailed guide.  For a complete listing of the Nites lineup, head to the official site.  Follow the jump for our recs.

Show Preview: White Mystery @ Beerland (9/2)

Date 9/2/11
Location Beerland
Doors 9pm
Tickets Guessing under $10 @ door?

Beerland has a great show lined up for Friday night featuring Chicago garage rockers White Mystery.  Joining the bro/sis duo on stage and rounding out a solid lineup are Mouthbreathers, and 3 local bands A Giant Dog, Rayon Beach, and Maine Coons.  This should be a loud show for fans of true rock n roll.  Who’s in?  I also don’t see a door cost so feel free to leave a comment if anyone finds that info.

Show Preview: Bad Sports @ Beerland (8/27)

Date Saturday, August 27th
Location Beerland
Doors 900p
Tickets CHEAP

You all know how much I love my punk rock, and probably the best place in town to enjoy such bands, for me, is Beerland.  It’s the perfect place to catch the gritty power-pop of Bad Sports, the Texas band who’ve been blazing away after the release of their recent record, Kings of the Weekend.  As if one great band wasn’t enough, you’ll get two, with Wax Museums opening up the evening just after Bang Bang Theodores. It’s going to be cheap, there’s going to be booze, and some of the best bands around, so you better get there!

Show Pics: The Rumble @ Beerland

The Rumble was back in town featuring three local acts. Hosted ever so graciously by Beerland, ATH joined a Wednesday night crowd for the mystery beer special and The Asteroid Shop, Bali Yaaah, and The Ghost Wolves.

The Ghost Wolves raised brows, putting on a great power duo performance, even covered a Mountain tune. A complete contrast, Bali Yaaah shared their blend of dance, worldbeat and psych. The Asteroid Shop brought big anthems of Indie-Alt.

Don’t be afraid. Pics from the show after the break…

Show Preview: Literature, Grape St. and more @ Beerland (6/29)

Date Wednesday, June 29th
Location Beerland
Doors 900p
Tickets CHEAP

Beerland is perhaps my favorite place in Austin during the summer, mostly because I can actually go their shows since I have a summer break. Wednesday night’s show though, it’s bringing together all my favorites in one small space, and you know it’s going to be cheap.  They’ve got my favorite local act, Literature, who of course are going to kill it.  Grape Street, featuring members of Harlem, and they always win.  Some man named Wes Coleman, who you should definitely know by now. Oh, and The Wolf and Warren Jackson Hearne too.  All this, air conditioning, good beer prices, and I’m sold. So you know where to be if you want to have a good time in Austin on Wednesday night.
