Mercury Rev Still Has It

mercuryrevw0When I first pressed play on the track below, I’ll admit I was expecting something quite different; in the first few seconds of the song I was immediately gravitating towards expectations of a Cults-esque sound, but what I got was something completely different. Mercury Rev have been around for quite a long time (circa 1988), but they’re still quite able to turn a great track, as “Are You Ready?” will certainly attest. The song is a streamlined thrashing of indie rock– synths push through the whole thing loudly and drums bombast through the mix. This is the kind of song that makes you excited for an album and The Light In You will be available quite soon through Bella Union on September 18th.

Beat Laden Lady Pop from Hannah Cohen

hcThis debut single from Hannah Cohen is quite the little gem.  There’s a darkness in the utilized beats of her new album’s latest track, but her voice is so playful that it’s juxtaposition creates a mesmerizing touch.  You’ll hear a slight resemblance to Feist during a few moments, but the style is quite different in every other aspect; I love the voice control, providing little tonal changes that are really appealing. Bella Union will be releasing her new album, Pleasure Boy, on March 31st.

Great Track From The Trouble With Templeton

THETROUBLEWITHTEMPLETON1-MARCH2013.123528

I’ve been on a punk rock kick lately, but I’ve grown a bit tired of that today and want to take a left turn here.  This new track, “Soldiers”, from Australian band The Trouble With Templeton is doing just that for me.  I dig the way the tune sort of starts off as a heavy, dark bass number, and then morphs into a pop number complete with some haunting vocals and catchy guitars.  Me gusta.

Rookie will be available on May 12th via Bella Union.

New Music from Horse Thief

horsethiefI’ve got a soft spot for Horse Thief.  They’re a Texas band that moved to Oklahoma (where I went to college) to attend The School of Contemporary Music, where a few of our friends teach.  I can’t say whether or not any of those friends influenced what’s on this record, but regardless, I’m enjoying the finished product.  It lays somewhere in the realm of light-hearted indie rock, but there’s creativity in the various layering placed atop the track, be it shakers or piano or guitar work. Their album Fear In Bliss will be released by Bella Union on April 14th; it should definitely be something on your radar.

Soft Tune from Lanterns on the Lake

lanternsI’m a huge sucker for a beautiful female voice, especially when it’s strung atop well-crafted musical accompaniment.  I love the way there’s these light strings accenting the push of the drums.  There’s this beautiful tension that just builds and builds, erupting near the very end of the track.  If you’re looking for something with a nice bit of construction and majesty, then you won’t have to look much further than this number.  Lanterns on the Lake will release Until the Colours Run on January 14th, followed by a short US tour, so keep your eyes peeled for this promising act.

Floating Pop from Money

MONEY-byJulienBourgeois02-e1331244412408There’s really not too much information floating about for Manchester outfit, Money, although they did get a decent response with their Cillian Murphy directed video.  I’m pretty impressed with the group’s sound, with the group making stunningly dense pop tunes with various movements within their tracks.  You’ve got to listen carefully to grasp, or hear rather, all the tiny touches the band put into their songwriting.  Should make for a remarkable debut when they release The Shadow of Heaven on August 26th via Bella Union.

New Tunes from Heidi Spencer

Well, this is a bit of a change up for us this week, as we’ve been running around with lots of high energy tracks, but I couldn’t resist a bit of mellowness as the week winds down. Heidi Spencer & the Rare Birds have been making a huge wave over with the NME, and you can tell that a lot of American audiences will definitely enjoy her work due to its similarity to a woman and her harp. Regardless of similarities, Spencer does seem to have a bit more of a traditional folkie in her.  You can check out her album on March 29th, titled Under Streetlight Glow. Give the tune a listen.

New Tunes From The Kissaway Trail

imageDenmark band The Kissaway Trail are returning in 2010 after a little bit of a hiatus in terms of releasing new material.  An upcoming LP from the young band will be called Sleep Mountain and sees the light of day April 6th on Bella Union.  Until that time, have yourself a listen to this new single “SDP” which will appear on the upcoming sophomore effort.  The song can get a little long for my taste, but also has some really beautiful elements to it.
