About Last Night: Levitation Night Two (10/27)

While Nathan was solo on Thursday, the ATH crew rolled deep on Friday night with a full crew hitting almost every venue offered by Levitation Festival. While the rain dampened spirits a bit to start the evening, things ramped up once the skies cleared and we took full advantage of the full variety of musical styles on the lineup. We covered a ton of ground and saw a plethora of bands, all which you can read about after the jump.

Last Week’s Jams (8.7 – 8.11)

Admittedly, we might have outdone ourselves last week; I’m fairly certain I’m the one to blame. Somehow, we tossed up 40 songs, though a few are unavailable in the streaming sites, so you’ve only got 38 tracks on this week’s playlist. There’s a ton of Austin stuff, with new music from Daiistar, Semihelix, Half Dream and more…obligatory A Giant Dog is in there and such. Plus, still continuously impressed by the magic that is Prewn. Oh, and Australia’s buzzing at the moment, and their music isn’t half-bad either, with new tracks from the Small Intestines and Soft Covers being considered as must listens. So, if you’ve got an hour or two to kill…go on and stream!

Blonde Redhead Share Before Single

I thought I had our musical coverage all planned out today, but it’s hard to pass on a Blonde Redhead track, right? This new single does seem like the perfect bit of coffee pop, with Kazu’s vocals pushed way up in the front, as the texture operate in the background. My ears, at this early moment in the morning, feel like there’s sort of two songs going on behind her, only adding the depth; the percussive element seems separate from the work of the keys, like two distinctive pieces working in unison to build a backdrop for the vocals. You almost get this sort of jazz brunch feel, and yet, somehow, all these years later, the group still manage to make their work seem fresh and stunning. They’ll release Sit Down for Dinner on September 29th via section1.

New Music From Blonde Redhead

Man, when was the last time you remember hearing anything from Blonde Redhead?  I can’t seem to remember anything from the band since their last LP 21?  Being a supporter of the group, I was pumped to find this new MP3 “Not Getting There” floating around the internet today.  The track apparently appeared on the exclusive 4AD 12″ vinyl released on Record Store Day.  Hopefully this means we can expect more new material in the near future.
