Fun Friday Streams

Friday’s, for me, Friday is a little bit of freedom, a little bit of a chance to kind of kick back and look towards the weekend. And, what better way to do that than by finding some sweet records to spend some time with as you so? I’ve compiled a few of the records on my list for today, maybe you’ll spend some time with them as well!

Alfie Firmin Announces Absentee

You can always rely upon the work of Bobo Integral, so when they announced Alfie Firmin‘s new album yesterday, I went back to check in on those sounds. Honestly, they’re a pleasant bit of pop songwriting, almost so relaxed it already has my eyes set on the summer time. The guitars are strummed lightly, plucked with enough energy to give the song a sweet bounce that has you softly tapping those toes. Firmin’s voice is crisp and velvety, but it gets a nice little boost from the great horn arrangements added to the track to provide a bit more depth. Looking forward to hearing Absentee in its whole; it drops on may 12th.

Lachlan Denton Annoucnes Furnishings

Bobo Integral turns 10 years old in 2023, so first, congrats to the label on a great run! But, with that anniversary, the label announces a new record from one of my favorite artists, Lachlan Denton (Ocean Party/Pop Filter/Partner Look). There’s a snappiness to this track, which is really charming, playing perfectly into Lach’s vocal delivery; I love how he stretches the syllables in “prove” and “lose” as the song’s two minute mark quickly approaches. In the subject matter, Denton is reminding us that there’s a whole world out there to lift us up, if we’re only willing to put down the phone and reach out to friends for those real connections. Another gem; I look forward to Furnishings when it drops on April 14th.

Daily Worker Announces Autofiction + Shares Irish Goodbye

What a great Tuesday! We’re pleased to share that Daily Worker, an Austin act helmed by Harold Whit Williams of Cotton Mather, has signed to one of our favorite labels Bobo Integral; it’s great when our worlds collide! With that, there’s a new single; it’s built upon this stomping beat, steady and forceful. That marching power allows the crispiness of the guitars to ring out, sounding somewhere between modern jangle and old school psychedelic, leaving plenty of open space for Williams to weave his lyrical majesty. The black and white video also gives a nod to to Harold’s lyrical gifts, as I’m pretty sure I spotted his A Rain Ancestral poetry collection in there! Autofiction will be out on February 3rd!

Fixtures Return with Jimmy Needs the Money

With nods to an old school style of rock n’ roll, it looks like Brooklyn’s Fixtures are ready to finally bring us their debut full length LP. Their lead single is a nice little introduction to what’s in store, offering a steady bit of rock swagger; it drips with cool, slowly shaking those hips with some dual vocal harmonizing. But, where you’ll fall in love is when the song hits the turbo button, blasting a bit of hook-laden noise into your ears during the chorus; it swirls with this sort of cacophony, but ultimately warms you with its ties to a central melody. The band drop Hollywood Dog this February via the ultra-reliable Bobo Integral.

Field School Share Jennifer Valentine

Only a couple of weeks until Field School release When Summer Comes, but as its Bandcamp Friday, we get to enjoy another charming single from the release. When people send me “bedroom pop,” this is sort of the style I’m looking for on my end of things, giving you an intimate pop hook that doesn’t feel like it’s trying to beat you over the head. Charles Bert’s voice sits perfectly in the recording, just above the soft beat and aligned right next to the ringing guitar sounds, balanced right in that wonderful sweet spot where it feels like the sun’s shining on your entire life. When Summer Comes is out on November 18th, but you can grab it from Bobo Integral today!

Field School Share Fresh Single

If ever a song felt like it was written specifically for me at this moment in time, then this has to be the one. On the flipside of a jangly pop jam, Charles Bert’s new project, Field School now brings us a more contemplative piece of pop, one that highlights the careful craft Bert brings to the fold of his new LP. Lyrically, the song seems to revel in that feeling that things are slowly returning to normal; it’s perhaps an apt descriptor for the many of us, coming, or beginning to peak our heads out again after several years of weariness. I love the way each little verse begins to take on a little more instrumentation, building and building all the way to the end; it feels in an a way like a nod to Magnetic Fields, and I don’t mind that one bit. When Summer Comes drops on November 18th via Bobo Integral.

Field School Announces When Summer Comes

Well, it seems only fitting that I fill these pages with bands I adore, even if they happen to be 1 degree from a previous post on the same day. You guessed it folks, Field School is the new project of former Math and Physics Club member Charles Bert. But, unlike the pristine pop substance of his friends, Charles brings in the steady ringing guitar work that gets mixed in with those angular jangles. Interestingly, though their various approaches may differ, they both seem to view the world with this spiritual optimism, and maybe that’s just the nature of the joy their song’s create. Still, there’s something about this tune (and the Model Shop track) that just makes you feel like there’s bright moments left to be uncovered in this world. When Summer Comes will be out on Bobo Integral on November 18th.

The Boys with the Perpetual Nervousness Share In the Right

If you’re lining up your anticipated releases scheduled for the end of the year, then you should surely have The Boys with the Perpetual Nervousness penciled in your “must listen” category. Today we get the third single from the band’s forthcoming LP, and it’s a straight up pop rock gem. The band have always operated with a velvety vocal approach, and that’s balanced out by the fuzzy riffs banging through your speakers, reminiscent of Teenage Fanclub. It feels jittery, teetering on the edge of an panic attack, then opens right up into their melodic pop rock brand, smoothing the wrinkles and winning us over. The Third Wave Of is out on September 9th via Bobo Integral.

The Boys with the Perpetual Nervousness Share Turning Red

Some pop music is written for the moment, but then other pop songwriters go about their business writing timeless pop tunes, just like the track below from The Boys with the Perpetual Nervousness. I don’t know whether it’s the perfect guitar jangle notes ringing out with that percussive stomp behind or whether it belongs to the comforting curl of the warm vocals, but I don’t think there’s a single person who’d turn this track off. It’s living somewhere in that perfect place between our love for bands like Teenage Fanclub and Nada Surf, so if that’s your bag, then you’re going to want to grab Third Wave Of… from Bobo Integral/Tear Jerk.
