New Slammer From Dreamwave

After absolutely tearing up things with new music in 2022 and then relentless touring last year, Bristol based Dreamwave really churned up some totally deserving buzz. This year looks to be full of more straight jams from the band, as evidenced by this raucous new single called “Mindcave.” For me, I dig it when a band doesn’t mess about and just gets right into the power and energy. No fussing about here. Stay tuned as this is surely just the first of more to come in 2024.

Sheer Beauty From Oslo Twins

Sometimes certain sounds and melodies hit your ear in just the right way at just the right time and you find yourself totally falling into the song. Today the up and coming Bristol based band Osolo Twins have embedded their sounds into my ear holes with this new single “Back to Nothing.” It blends the dreamy, delicate pop sounds of a band like Camera Obscura with subtle yet beautiful shifts from piece to piece throughout the track. Stunner.

Oslo Twins will release this song as part of their debut EP entitled Back to Nothing due out on July 28th via Fascination Street Records. Pre-orders are live now.

Dwell Release New Single on Open Tab

Open Tab, the singles project of Fire Talk Records, has given us some great stuff this past year, but today, be prepared to immerse yourself in the vast expanse that Dwell are offering. Their sound moves between this sort of grandiose indie folk and classic slowcore, casually moving forward one step at a time. Vocals here are dramatic and deep, pulling from our primal nature, with string arrangements helping to build this textural swell that completely overwhelms the listener. It’s weird, as you can sort of feel some lineage to post rock too, particularly in the way some of the guitar sounds cascade and cut through the vocals; I’m really loving this as a Friday soundtrack.

Stream Pterodactyl from Oro Swimming Hour

Back in 2017, this site was filled with notes about Oro Swimming Hour; I loved the band and their various releases that year. But, as happens more often than it should, I hadn’t checked in on them until an email came my way letting me know they had this new LP, Pterodactyl, out in the world. I’ve included the whole thing below, and with all the recent talk about Elephant 6, I encourage you to spend some time connecting the dots between Athens, Georgia and Bristol. They kind of feel like their an amalgam of pop, at all times. You hear little bits of power pop and psychedelia, but then there’s lots of little weird excursions and hidden moments that make it like the most joyous scavenger hunt for discerning music nerds. “Crocodile” and “Cold Tangerina” are my personal favorites at the moment, so find yours below! The LP is out now via Gold Day Records!

Banging New Single From Pet Shimmers

Bristol based band Pet Shimmers took the ATH offices by storm back in 2020 and we’ve been eagerly awaiting some new music ever since. This Spring our patience has been rewarded with news of a new 7″ featuring this new track called “Sonder”. The tune has those familiar fuzzy pop notes we love from Pet Shimmers, but also maybe a touch more of a pop element and a beautiful song progression. This band is surely on a path to stardom.

This tune will be featured on a 7″ single coming out on June 16th digitally and July 17th on vinyl. Pre-orders are live now.

Alternative Milks Share Shops

Bristol based band Alternative Milks are relatively new to the music scene, but surely a group you will be hearing a ton more about this fall. Most of their music would fall into the genre of post-punk, though after a listen to this new single, “Shops”, you’ll see why the band sort of defies general classification. With an inspiration from punk, or post punk, Alternative Milks take the somewhat tired genre and offer these small hints of pop music and a little playfulness to really make the song enjoyable to all music lovers. You’ll find “Shops” to be a tad silly but also fun as hell.

Raucous New Single From Home Counties

Bristol based band Home Counties may be a new name to you, though you likely knew them under their old moniker Haze. Now with a new name, the guys are debuting this ferocious and electrifying new single called “Redevelopment”. It features a nice melting pot of genres, seeing elements of jerky late 80s bands intertwined well with a more post-punk sound. Whatever label you want to slap on their sound, you have to admit that it is a truly unique and refreshing style. Stay tuned on more from these guys in the future as they release more music.

Another Pop Ditty from Pet Shimmers

Bristol outfit Pet Shimmers are crafting some sort of new-age pop fuckstorm; they’re taking the standard format and warping and twisting it around the backbone established by lead maestro, Oliver Wilde. Their sounds definitely are reminiscent of the sort of mish-mash of folk and bedroom pop; it sounds like the madness inside the caverns of one’s mind, but it’s being crafted and developed by a seven-piece pop outfit. I’ve been really impressed with their debut LP Face Down in Meta, and I think it’s going to sneak onto some people’s radars once they complete their tour with Sandy (Alex G); the album drops next Friday!

Digging Pet Shimmers Pop Vibes

I’m totally in love with this brand new track from Pet Shimmers, the UK act who’ve just announced their debut Face Down in Meta. The song began almost immediately, and I was hooked right there. At first, it sort of sounded like a fuzzy indiepop song, which, of course, had my interest. But, as the song unfolded, the fuzz layer began to feel more like a gloss that coated the song, akin to something you’d hear on a Radio Dept. LP. So there it is, imagine a youthful vibrancy spun through the lens of cloudy pop purveyors and you’ve got exactly what you’ve been looking for all your life. Face Down in Meta will be out on January 31st.
