Jaeger Shares Brainiac Single

Jaeger is the artist’s name, and not the brand, thus they are not releasing new Brainiac stuff…just to be clear. That said, I was instantly thrown into this song, as it weaves this sort of Elephant 6 left-of-pop sound into a grungier bit of bedroom pop. It toys with your senses, plugs into the distortion, then bounces back into the hook-laden section you can’t get out of your way. I can also hear bits of Unicorns or anything with Nick Thorburn associated in the sound, kind of just left of the dial, but definitely with a twist of classic pop vibes. Look for this song to appear on the upcoming 300 Worms EP.

Another New Album from No Museums

Those of you with an inclination towards a classic indie rock sound should be sure to spend some time with this post, as nothing feels like the history of the sound more than what No Museums continue to offer. Whether you like a little bit of noise or a nice light strum, the Canadian outfit build all those pieces together, mashing all those little pieces into a unique collection of great albums. Lowways starts with a gem,”Index,” which is the perfect encapsulation of the aforementioned combination of sounds, though I’ve been quite keen on “It’s Snow, It’s Dark,” which oddly recall the Galaxie 500. If you have about thirty minutes, indulge me here, and just press play and get lost in the weaving of indie rock patterns you’ll find lurking below.

Premiere: Sunnsetter Shares Yet Another Jam

Man if Andrew McLeod isn’t just killing it this year with his stunning new solo work under the recording moniker Sunnsetter. Back in April, the Canadian songwriter shared what may be in my Top 10 by the time the year ends with his track “I Actually Don’t Wanna Die.” Since then, new tracks have come in, album previews have been sent, and I can tell you that the new album will truly be something to behold. Prior to the release of Heaven Hang Over Me next month, McLeod has dropped this beauty called “I Feel Everything” found below. This album is packed with so many emotive moments just like this one, and I can’t wait for the masses to get ahold of it.

The aforementioned new Sunnsetter album, Heaven Hang Over Me, is due out on November 15th via Paper Bag Records. Pre-orders are of course live now.

Crack Cloud Share the Medium

It’s early on Tuesday, and I definitely needed something to get me out of bed. The familiarity of Crack Cloud‘s latest single was definitely something that grabbed my interest, pulling the sheets off and reaching for my laptop. At first, it feels a bit like a young act mocking the Sex Pistols, but when you get in deeper you’ll hear a bit more polish, almost like they’ve repackaged the sound to bring bigger hooks. They reveal this further when they strip it all back in the middle, feeding a dreamy pop vocal performance right in the middle of the angst…and like the video’s balloon suggest…the song ends up being all pop, but in a refreshing manner. They release Red Mile on July 26th via Jagjaguwar.

New Music from OWF

Honestly, there’s not really a lot of information about OWF; there’s no Instagram or Bandcamp, and barely a presence on Spotify. That said, there’s something intriguing about the music that I’ve heard from the artists. There are moments when there’s the wry humor and heart-on-the-sleeve sincerity of Stephin Merritt, but at other times, there’s this sort of poetic playfulness like a Juan Wauters. It’s a quick little jaunt of sparse bedroom pop material, but the more I listen, the more I’m fascinated by this sort of outsider pop approach. I’ll keep you posted if we get to hear more!

New Tune From Jaguar Sun

Ontario based musician Chris Minielly has been making music under the moniker Jaguar Sun for 6+ years now and has a slew of great releases to stream over on his bandcamp page. Today the focus is on this new track called “Don’t Stress” which was featured on the For You EP that came out last week. The song is seemingly perfect for a Monday morning likely filled with start of the week dread and will surely ease your mind with it’s calming, easy sound. Let the bass and soothing vocals bring you some calm this morning.

You can stream and/or purchase the new For You EP from Jaguar Sun over on bandcamp.

Gulfer Return With Too Slow

After a stellar pandemic release with their self-titled LP in 2020, Montreal based Gulfer didn’t release a whole lot of music over the last few years. Other than a random single hear and there, the band was mostly quiet. Last November though showed a strong return for the band with one of my favorite songs of last year “Clean.” This year looks to be a strong return to form for Gulfer with a whole new album, which will feature this banging new single “Too Slow.” It serves as a heavier sound than what we might be used to from the Canadians and serve us all notice that they are back and stronger than ever.

Gulfer’s third album Third World is out on February 28th and is available for pre-order now via Topshelf Records.

Ballsy Share Be Your Baby

Give me some jangling guitars and coat them in dreamy notes, then you’ll find me smack dab in fawning zone, like I was with this fresh track from Canadian outfit Ballsy. Despite the joyous nature of the hooks coming through your speakers, close attention to the lyrical content delves into some difficult subject matter, such as facing abandonment from songwriter Isabelle Banos’ mother. This is what’s always make pop music timeless, bridging difficult moments in our life so that we can all sing through our sorrows. Be sure to stick around for the grungy solo about 2/3 of the way in, indicative of Banos abilities to walk the line between rock and pop in their songwriting.

Subtle Beauty From Mise En Scene

Winnipeg is home to the Jets, Neil Young, and my new favorite band from the city, Mise en Scene. Formed while studying art together in the city, BFFs Stef and Jodi formed the band over mutual musical tastes and have ignited a spark with unique sounds and vibes. For a taste of the duos sound, hit up this new song “Beautiful People” and left yourself fall into the dreamy tune as it flows and slowly builds throughout.

This is part of a new EP entitled Reality Bites which is available to purchase now via Light Organ Records.

POSTDATA Returns with New Single & Video

Back about 2 years ago, Nova Scotian musician Paul Murphy released his third stunning LP Twin Flames under his recording moniker POSTDATA. Much to my delight, Murphy just announced his fourth LP away from Wintersleep and has also brought with it this new single “Mine the Sea.” Not surprisingly, the track offers a breath of lightness with hints of joy and love within the driving pop sounds. GEM.

This song will appear on the new album Run Wild due out in September on Paper Bag Records.
